On Wednesday afternoon I attended the Clontarf Awards night along with the Clontarf boys, staff, teachers, parents and community members.

The afternoon encapsulated the hard work of both Clontarf staff and students, as well as the amazing achievements of our boys.

The following Year 6 students received their graduation certificates from Murgon State School Clontarf Academy. Jackron Speedy, Christian Simpson, Trequaan Stanley, Todd Purcell, Shamus Cobbo, Xander Hawkins, Joshua Williams and Xavier Van Beelen.

Several other achievements were also recognised through the presentation of the following awards.

Magpie of the year (Overall excellence) – Jackron Speedy Trainer of the Year – Jayden Minniecon & Shamus Cobbo Attendance Award – Ziggy Pidgeon & Joshua Williams

With half of Term 4 done, students are now on the home stretch towards finishing the 2018 school year. This is a good opportunity for students to recognise the hard work they have put in to get to where they are, and to continue to strive towards achieving their ABC expectations, which will see them participating in the Rewards

Day in Week 10.

Mr Joe Amery Acting Deputy Principal

There are many roles and staff within our schools who work together to improve learning access and outcomes for all students. The 21st – 27th of October was Occupational Therapy Week. In this week we recognise our dedicated school occupational therapists who work in partnership with education teams to enable students with disability to be included, to participate and to achieve to their potential. Thank you to all the staff who, everyday work towards improving learning environments for all students to achieve success.

This Term for Arts we have transformed ourselves into the most talented and famous of Rockstars! We are a class full of natural movers and shakers and so it comes as no surprise that we have nailed our dance assessment! In groups of 3s and 4s we have learnt and performed a dance to represent the season of winter, and are smashing it out of the park! Next week we begin coming up with our

own routines based on a different season. No doubt it will be spectacular! Why not ask your superstar to show you some moves?

All students create a reading goal in our classrooms. Students are working on improving their learning in reading through conversations with their teacher on how to do this. We look closely at what your child can already do and then design goals around how to improve their results. Every 5 weeks, teachers check in with students about their current reading level, their next goal and the steps they need to take to achieve that goal.

Reading is part of our Improvement Agenda because it helps learning in every curriculum area. Every child is different and we are trying to ensure they will have a goal that helps them to improve. They will have a goal that suits their needs and will be working on goals that include comprehension, decoding, fluency, sight words, phonemic awareness or reading behaviours. Parents, you can help us to do this too through Home Reading. Thank you for your support.

Prep M students are really enjoying learning about pets and how to care for them. Each day, students are writing about how they will care for their pet. So far, this Term we have learnt about dogs, cats and this week we learnt about having a pet bird. As part of English rotations, students have enjoyed playing with the robot dog and cat, pretending to do all the things they have written about how they will look after it.

Students a fortnight ago, brought their favourite stuffed toy into school and we had a ‘pet picnic’ with our Grade 6 buddies while reading a story under the trees.

Mrs Susan Mollenhauer

Prep M Prep KStudents were so excited to use their knowledge of money to buy items using coins from ‘Miss Sim’s shop’. Students immersed in money and identified how to count and add up 1 Dollar coins. At the end of Miss Sim’s 4 week placement, students accumulated their money and were able to purchase items from the shop. This has been a great incentive for students and incorporates everyday situations into their learning.

Have you thought about how you could use water more wisely? 3B have! Ask your child if they have any water saving tips for you. We have spent the Term investigating water usage and the many ways Australian’s can save water. Our assessment began this week, and we are beginning to create our informative persuasive pamphlets. I have seen some creative titles and slogans, as well as detailed reasons to save water. It is exciting to see all this knowledge come together in an eye-catching pamphlet.

In English, to prepare for our assessment which is rapidly approaching, we have been innovating a range of poems. We identified poetic devices and a variety of language features, then looked at rhyming words and syllables that make up the beat and rhythm. We then co-constructed a reconstruction of the poem. Ms Teilha Keehn

Original Poem – By Neal Levin“My Nose is Running”My nose is running, yes it is,It hopped right off my face. It’s scurrying down the corridor,And hurrying place to place.

Reconstruction of Poem – By 2/3K“My Eyes Are Rolling”My eyes are rolling, yes they are,They rolled right off my head. They’re scampering up the school hallway, And hurrying to find my bed.

In the first newsletter of the Term, we mentioned our last English task for the year. The task is to design our own cereal box with the final task, an advertising pitch, to convince fellow students that it is a product they cannot live without. We have looked closely at audio, visual and language features of a wide range of both still and video ads. This means we are now ready to invent the greatest cereal ever and use all our knowledge of effective advertising, to create an ad that cannot be forgotten.

We are also sad to say goodbye to Mr Butterworth who has finished his final prac! We have loved having him in the classroom and are thankful for all that he has taught us. Mr Butterworth says he has loved his time in the 4C classroom. Mr Kurt Butterworth (Prac Teacher) & Miss Kirrilly Haynes

Mr Nelson has parted ways with our class in order to head back to University and Mrs Dyson is back into the swing of things. Term 4 Lecturette palm cards were due last week. If your child has not completed this task, please ensure they do this as soon as possible. We will begin our Lecturette practice and feedback sessions next week prior to our upcoming Presentation Week. Thank you to all parents/caregivers for the outstanding support you have given in ensuring your child has their clothing to attend swimming lessons. 100% of the 1/2D students have participated in swimming each week. Great job!Mrs Courtney Dyson

It’s everyone’s favourite time of year again, Swimming Lesson time! 6S has been lucky enough to have swimming lessons first thing Monday morning, which is a great opportunity for everyone to wake themselves up and get into the swing of things for the week. Our swimming lessons have been preparing them for our end of year swimming carnival which we are all very excited for.

This Term has been a crazy one for everyone in Year 6 with so many transition days and events preparing them for graduation. With only 5 weeks to go until they are no longer Primary School students, it is their time to step up and get themselves organised for the big change coming in all their lives.

Mr Harry Sinclair

This Term students in Year 6, have been creating presentations that encompass both dance and drama elements. Student’s assessment is to choreograph or devise a presentation based on an Australian or Asian natural disaster. Students have been exploring the dramatic elements including learning to use expression, voice, narrative, movement, tension and character. They have also looked at the dance technical skills or coordination, movement, alignment, strength and balance.

HPE Swimming has well and truly started in PE and the number of students participating is fantastic! Please do not forget to bring your togs and towel on PE days. The sun is shining and the pool is refreshing! Students have been learning how to safely enter a pool, perform various floats, as well as working on their kicking and stroke development. The Prep classes have loved being in the pool with lots of giggles and big smiles whilst learning such valuable skills. There are only three weeks left of our swimming rotations and I would love to see 100% participation in these lessons.

Miss Elyse Williams, HPE Specialist

This fortnight has been full of fun and exciting learning. Within English, students have learnt all the language features that they are required to implement within their writing. We are currently, co-constructing an exemplar, by applying our knowledge of particular language features to improve our writing. In HASS, students have been exploring the three levels of Government and the roles each representative has. We will be applying our knowledge of key Democratic values in a school setting. As this year is quickly drawing to the end, the Year 5’s are looking forward to being leaders of the school next year. They have been identifying and comparing the Australian electoral process with the school’s election process.Miss Madison Mobbs

Moving and grooving – what fun on a Friday! We are learning the elements of Dance and Drama so that we can work co-operatively in groups to devise and perform for an audience this Term. Students are learning the narrative structure of a variety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories. They will have to decide how they will perform a story for their peers. Some fun activities we have been doing include mime, use of facial expressions to show emotions, working with others to develop a scenario and freeze frames. Students are having lots of fun in this unit and are practising their dance skills with the very popular ‘Just Dance’ videos each week.

Students across all year levels have immersed themselves into the study of plants, animals, habitats and the requirements of all living things for survival. Prep students are investigating how we look after plants and animals both at home and in a wild environment while students in Year 1 and 2 have been investigating the life stages of plants and animals and how they survive in their habitats. Students in Year 3 have been practising grouping living and non-living things while Year 4 students have begun drawing concept maps to demonstrate the relationships of living things within specific habitats. Year 5 students have been investigating the adaptations of plants and animals and how they assist or hinder their survival in different environments. Year 6 students have been investigating the factors that affect plant growth and how the environmental conditions can be manipulated to optimise growth and

health of plants.
