Term 3 – Week 8 – 2019 PRINCIPAL’S PEN There were a plethora of Potters and a whole lot of other amazing characters at school to celebrate Book Week. It was certainly a lot of fun and the winner was reading, with the top library borrowers from each year level rewarded with a book. A shout out to Mrs McKenzie and Mrs Green whose ‘not so secret power’ was organising a great week of events in the library. NAPLAN 2020 Enoggera State School are transitioning to NAPLAN ONLINE for Years 3 and 5 Students in 2020. In order to adequately plan and prepare for this a series of scheduled practice tests will be occurring between now and May 2020. The first practice will occur with Year 2 and 4 students in week 10 of this term. The practice test is de - identified and does not collect information on individual students. The focus is on allowing students multiple opportunities to contextualise whilst allowing the school to streamline management processes to ensure a smooth testing period next year.

A public demonstration site is available where you and your child can view the sorts of ICT skills that are used in questions they encounter with NAPLAN Online. The demonstration site does NOT tailor to a student's ability though. The questions are just provided to show what a test might look like. Term 3 Data Collection: Teachers will come offline to plan for Term 4 Teaching and Learning in weeks 8, 9 and 10. The Planning schedule for weeks 8, 9 and 10 are: Week 8 Wednesday: 4A & 4B Thursday: 2A and 2B Week 9 Wednesday 5A, 56A and 6A Thursday: PA, PB & P1A Week 10 Wednesday 3A and 3B Thursday: 1A and P1A

Library News Many forms have already been returned for the

Congratulations to everyone that has already

completed the challenge. Just a reminder that the forms are due back

no later than Wednesday 4th September to either the classroom teacher or the library. Unfortunatley any forms

returned after this date will not be valid to enter.

This is a really easy challenge for the students to compete in as they only have to read 20 books for Prep to Year 4

and 15 books for Year 5-6 The requirement for Year 5 and 6 to read 15 books acknowledges that older students are likely to select longer, more complex books that may take them longer to read.

The following activities can be counted

towards the challenge: reading independently shared reading being read to (Prep – Year 2 only). printed books e-books, virtual books and digital publications graphic novels and comic books audio and braille books newspapers, magazines and recipe books.

We appreciate that it isn’t a long time, however make sure you include books previously borrowed or read in the last couple of months, including library books, home readers etc 100% participation would be fantastic! As an added incentive, the class with the highest participation rate will receive a small prize. So good luck everyone – set yourselves a reading target and read, read, read!

Well what can we say about the SPECTACULAR Book Week Parade? All the students and

staff showed their amazing enthusiasm for books with a great display of costumes, fun and

community spirit. Thank you also to all the parents, family and friends that stayed to

celebrate with us.

Prizes were awarded to the top borrowers from each class. Congratulations to Scarlett T

boxes, “Calm down sandwiches”, bird tessellations, book marks, super hero masks, book readings, paper

caterpillars and sitting stinkbugs. A very special thank you to some of our fantastic senior girls Elle, Karly, Ella for

helping out with the activities.

And remember, you never know, reading may unlock your SECRET POWER!!!

Happy Reading

CLASS NEWS This term in Year 3 we have been exploring other cultures and using our imaginations to discover the fantastical world of dragons! In English we have been studying the text, Kumiko and the Dragon by Briony Stewart. We have had an in-depth look at how the language and pictures in the book work together to create the story and allow the reader to understand the characters and their feelings. We have explored the camera angles and composition of pictures used in the book and how these add meaning to the text. Students are now working on creating their own imaginative narrative with pictures about themselves and a dragon. In Art, we have continued with the theme of dragons and explored the Chinese Dragon – the ultimate symbol of good fortune. Students have created Chinese Dragon Paintings using oil pastels and watercolours.

Religious Instruction

Christian Religious Instruction (CRI or RI) is available at Enoggera State School and all children are invited to participate in RI classes. Recently an information brochure has been published to help inform parents about RI. RI at ESS is currently run under a ‘single arrangement religious instruction program’ in partnership with Emmanuel Uniting Church, led by trained volunteers. Anne Maloney is currently taking Year 1 and 2 classes and has 12 years’ experience with children through Girl Guides, 7 years as a leader. Maureen Witheyman takes Year 3 and 4 classes and has over 25 years’ experience in teaching high school students at all levels. Lulu Shanks takes Year 5 and 6 classes, has veterinary qualifications, has practised for 10 years and taught at university for 3 years. These ladies have joyfully been taking RI classes at Enoggera SS for 10 years. They all have blue cards and receive training in RI and Child Safe practices yearly. They believe that knowing about God’s love encourages students in their own lives and in healthy ways of relating to others. They use a workbook-based curriculum called CEP Connect. Samples of the student and instructor books can be viewed via the links below. Printed sample copies are also available at the office. Year 1-2 student book Year 1-2 instructor book Year 3-4 student book Year 3-4 Instructor book Year 5-6 student book Year 5-6 Instructor book To check whether your child is participating in RI, or to change their consent please contact the school office.
