Hospitality at BCS Barraba Central School now offers our students the chance to complete Certificate II in Hospitality (Food and Beverage) over Year 11 and Year 12 as part of their HSC. This has become possible as I have been super lucky to be offered the opportunity to complete a year’s worth of study to retrain as a fully qualified Hospitality teacher. Along with 30 other teachers from around New South Wales who represent public, independent and Catholic schools, I travelled to the William Angliss College in Surry Hills during March to complete a week of practical tasks. The training was run by Head Chefs Paul and Cain who shared their kitchen secrets. I will travel back down in May to complete another week in the College’s fantastic kitchens. Along with the practical sessions, I also need to complete around 16 assignments – gee I hope I pass! The teaching staff at William Angliss has been very supportive and is keen to make sure that the students at BCS get the most up to date industry knowledge by ensuring a highly trained teacher is in front of them. They know how important it is to have our students working at industry standard. They are certainly working me hard! If you have any questions about the Hospitality course at BCS please do not hesitate to contact the school for more details. Mrs Longstaff

Plan-it Youth Putting wise heads on young shoulders

A big thankyou goes out to our Plan-it Youth mentors who have been working so well this term with some of our Year 10 students. The mentors come to the Secondary each Tuesday morning to assist students with:

planning their future

planning and organising work experience

encouraging academic success The mentors donate their time each Tuesday and have been an amazing support to the students while I have been away in Sydney completing additional training. I can’t thank them enough for the time, effort and dedication they have given for the students of Barraba Central School. Thank you to Pam King, Margaret Harris, Tony Spencer, Kim Mallise and Judy Brady. This program would not run in our school without special people like you in our school community. Mrs Longstaff

Barraba Central School Term 1 – Week 10 2 April 2013 CHS Open’s Touch football Knockout In week 8 we had two teams compete in the CHS Opens Touch Football knockout. All students played to the highest standard and showed great athleticism and sportsmanship. Unfortunately the Boys side just missed out being defeated by Oxley High School 7-5. However, the Girls side just won defeating Peel High School 6-5. This win takes the girls to the next round against Tamworth High. This game will take place in Term 2. Well done to all students who participated in these matches!

North West Touch football Carnival, Inverell In Term 2 Week 9, 22 students will represent Barraba Central School in the North West Touch Football Carnival to be held in Inverell. We wish both teams all the best in this competition.

Please check your feet! These school shoes were left in A Block the morning of the Central Schools Carnival held in Guyra. Could you please check to see if you are missing a pair of shoes and collect them from the Secondary office.

Barraba Library From Saturday 6th April Barraba Library will be open on Saturday mornings from 10 am to noon. From Friday 12th April the library will cease to open on Friday afternoons. This will continue for a six month trial period and usage will be monitored to determine whether this variation to the hours provides better access to library services for Barraba residents.

Barraba Junior Cricket Presentation On Friday 5th April the Junior Cricket Club will be holding their annual Presentation. This will be held immediately after the final match.

Please contact the school if you would like your community organisation meetings placed on the calendar – it will be updated weekly. We would

also like to send a copy of the newsletter via email for the odd occasion that you may miss a hard copy.

Primary and High school School zone safety A reminder to parents about the operation of school speed zones around the Easter holidays. School zones exist for the safety of children and families; they will operate on Thursday 28 March, then resume on Tuesday 2 April. Forty-kilometres-an-hour school speed zones operate across New South Wales at all school sites on gazetted school days, which are all days the school is open, even pupil-free days. Find out more: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety/children/schoolroadsafety/schoolzoneprogram.html

Primary school Back by popular demand Mention head lice and most of us instantly develop an itch. While head lice and nits, (the eggs of head lice) are certainly annoying and persistent, they're not dangerous. Here's everything you need to know to rid your kids of head lice and nits. http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/environment/headlice/Pages/nitbusters.aspx

Because most cyberbullying happens in the home, parents need to be aware of the technology that young people are using. http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/technology/cyberbullying/when-cyberbullying-hits-home
