It was wonderful to see new additions to our Jindabyne Central School family. The Kindy Start program is the first day of the partnership between the school, teachers and new Kindy parents in relation to a child’s education. Our aim is that during the shorten thirteen years of education we will make a significant contribution that will last a life time. The initial steps of the program are about making your child feel at home in the classroom and in helping all children come together in our learning community. This learning community is made up of unique individuals, each with his or her learning styles, interests, history, hopes and dreams so please ensure that you communicate with us about your child. Gym Extension The progress of the gym extension is on track and we envisage the completion date to be 25 November. This will enable the school to conduct its formal K-6 and 7-12 Assemblies as scheduled at the end of term 4. We have been fortunate with the weather and building progress to date and hope this will continue. P&C Meeting 26 October at 6pm The Jindabyne Central School P&C will meet on Wednesday 26 October at 6pm. Of interest to parents and community members will be the proposed changes to Kalkite Street as part of the refurbishment by council. This could mean significant change to traffic flow, all through traffic on Kalkite Street etc. Joseph Vescio General Manager, Dean Lynch Administrator and Gary Shakespeare will be at the P&C meeting to provide an overview of the options for the Snowy River Avenue Upgrade. I would ask parents to come along. Please find attached plans of the options. The options are detailed below with some of the advantages and disadvantages of each option. Option 1 Open Kalkite Street to all traffic in both directions. Sufficient safety awareness measures commensurate with formal school crossing will be installed. Provides five additional car parking spaces and creates off street bus parking facility. Option 2 Open Kalkite Street to one way traffic all flowing park Road to Snowy River Avenue direction. Dedicated left side bus land and formalised off street bus parking area. Provides five additional car parking spaces. Disadvantage is that the passenger are exiting vehicle not on a pedestrian footpath and potentially need to deal with Kalkite street being used as a traffic short cut in peak winter periods. Open Kalkite Street to one way traffic all flowing park Road to Snowy River Avenue direction. Dedicated left

Option 3

Open Kalkite Street to one way vehicle traffic flowing Snowy River Avenue to Park Road, dedicated bus lane

flowing as per current situation (park Road to Snowy River Avenue). Provides five additional car parking

spaces and creates off street bus parking facility. Advantage is that the passenger are exiting vehicle directly

onto a pedestrian footpath and no incentive for drivers to cut through Kalkite Street onto Kosciusko Rd.

Option 4

Do nothing. A formalised off street bus parking area will be formed. No additional car parking spaces will be

achieved outside of the increase in the main car park. Currently there are issues of congestion in Park Road

which affects ability to respond to emergency situations. Kalkite Street is underutilised for the majority of

the time outside peak periods in the morning and afternoon. Permeability of the town is minimised.

3O students reflect on their Video Conference with the Royal Botanic Gardens

By Ryan Allen Last Thursday 3O had a video conference in the library and we met a scientist called Mary from the labs in Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens. She told us a lot about plants. We learnt about the biggest seed in the world which is a double coconut seed, the most endangered seed in world, how seeds grow and what they need to grow. We learnt that plants make their own food and that grass has more seed on it then a normal bunch of flowers. At the video conference we also learnt that coconut seeds are protected by a coat of husk that floats and is really hard. Mary also put some seeds in a tank of water and my class had to guess if they would float or sink. We saw some pictures of scientist studying some seeds and counting them. Then she showed us a seed vault the was -20 degrees Celsius with a fire alarm, water sprinkler’s on the roof and a generator. Next she showed us a picture of the place she works, she told us that they started in a tin shed and now they have a big building and science lab. Lastly we got to ask a few questions and mine was “what is the smallest seed in the world?” The answer was that there is a seed smaller then a grain of pepper. By Bella Caddy-Gammell. Last week my class and I went to a video conference in the school library to learn about seeds, plants and how they grow. The lady that showed us all of the seeds was Mary and Mary works as a scientist at the Royal Botanic Gardens. At the video conference we learnt about all different types of seeds and plants. Mary showed us a picture of the biggest seed in the world which is a double coconut seed which is endangered. It was very large. We also learnt that the most popular seed on earth is the grass seed because people grow grass all over the whole world, that’s pretty cool! I thought the video conference was very interesting, we got to learn lots of things about seeds and lots of things about plants.

Dear Parents and Carers of students in the 7/8 Self Select Program As part of our efforts to improve student learning outcomes and student engagement at Jindabyne Central School, the Executive is asking the parents of students in the 7/8 Self Select class to complete an evaluation. Students in the Self Select class have already been given an opportunity to complete their own survey, and the data collected is currently begin reviewed by the Self Select teaching team and the school Executive. The data obtained from both the parent and student evaluation processes will be closely interrogated by the Executive team and class teachers. By gathering evidence of parent satisfaction, student learning and engagement and teacher effectiveness, the Self Select teachers and Executive will be able to make informed decisions about the retention of information, depth of learning, variety of challenges presented and the engagement of students in the 2016 Self Select Program. Through this process, students and parents will be able to play a positive role in improving the climate of learning and teaching with their classroom. Parents can access the Self Select Parent Evaluation by clicking on the link below (or copying and pasting it into your browser) and answering the questions: https://goo.gl/forms/IjVIDBHlMDgtjw013 Alternatively, parents can collect a hard copy of the evaluation from JCS School Reception. Please complete the survey before 21st November. The sooner we have the data, the sooner we can begin evaluating and modifying the self Select learning programs for 2017. Hard copies should be returned to School Reception or Ms Belshaw in the Secondary staff Room. Thank you for your support in this process. Best wishes to the Year 7 & 8 Debating team (Rhiannon Warner, Molly Robinson, Josie Baff, Zac Corcoran and Baili Pendergast) who will be debating in the Illawarra South East Regional Finals Draw of the Premiers Debating Challenge. They will be debating against Goulburn High School in a Video Conference on Monday the 24th of October. If they win the debate they will be travelling to Wollongong to debate in the state-wide Semi Finals and Finals on Friday the 28th of October.

History Extension has commenced at Jindabyne Central School and is being run as a HSC option for the first time. This is a rigorous and academic course being taught by Mrs Borcherds who attended Professional Learning recently at Corowa High School. The course was expertly run by Paul Kiem, from the History Teachers Association. Paul comprehensively explained every element of the course, offering wonderful insight and excellent practical advice about effective teaching and learning for success. Differing perspectives on historical events was a common theme, with some focus on how the digital revolution has democratised history as evidence is now available to the masses online. He presented a case study about a schoolgirl’s blog that responded to a professor’s inaccurate tweet, which in turn led to an online debate between an academic and an amateur historian. It was fascinating to hear how the schoolgirl proved the professor wrong. History Extension is full of exciting historical debates! If you are interested in history and want to take part in this democratic sharing of information follow Mrs Borcherds on Twitter @MrsBorcherds

HSC DRAMA Successful Nomination to Onstage In Week 7 of Term 3, The HSC drama practical exams were performed to external markers. The group performances titled 'Sheezus' and 'Make Arnotts Great Again', were received with high applaud and much laughter by the audience of Year 9 and 10 Drama students. The individual projects of monologue were suspenseful and engaged with pertinent societal issues. JCS would like to congratulate all students on their commitment to achievement in the practical component of the HSC Drama course. Special commendation is extended to Rachel Hukins, Bronwyn Brandon and Tanaha Hughes who have been nominated for Onstage for their group performance of 'Sheezus'. A nomination is awarded to the top performances which have achieved the maximum marks for their performance. This year is the third consecutive year that JCS students have been nominated for Onstage, with a successful application in 2014 for a group performance titled 'Christmas Island'. A special thank you to the 2016 HSC Drama teacher Hannah Moloney for her dedication in facilitating this success.

State Drama Festival Stars Best wishes are extended to Emmie Phillips and Naomi Waters who are attending the State Drama Festival at the Seymour Centre in Sydney this week. They have both been individually selected for their exemplar performance skills and will perform to an audience of thousands. Good luck Emmie and Naomi.

MATHEMATICS AND TIME Towards the end of Term 3, Years 7 and 8 students selected an individual research project with the focus on "time". Options included building a sundial, creating a classroom display depicting the seasons, designing a calendar or creating the itinerary for travel from Jindabyne to Hornsby.

It was a great opportunity for students to use their creativity for the chosen task. Pictured are Seasons by Freya

JCS Yr 8 SAMOAN VOLUNTEER TRIP

A group of 8 students and 4 teachers from Jindabyne Central School

will embark on a community and Civics project to Samoa in April, 2017.

These opportunities to engage with the local Samoan community will be in a support role and will provide our

students with a valuable cultural exchange. Our students will be immersed in the Samoan culture by living and eating

with a local family. We see this as a life changing experience that will develop leadership, cross cultural

understanding, empathy and citizenship.

Our students and teachers are covering the cost of their flights but need to raise funds towards the total project cost

of $36,280. The school is raising money toward the trip through Go Fund Me so if you can help go to

Congratulations to: Rebecca Greene, Lachlan Wallis, Heely Holliday, Connor Fricke, Harley Green, Bronwyn Brandon, Phoebe Treble, Mikayla Levis, Helena Waters, Curtis Gibbs, Phebe Hansen. For an early entry position each student had to complete an extensive online application, attend an interview either face to face at the university or over the phone. Feedback was our JCS students conducted themselves in a professional manner and gave interesting and inspiring answers at their interviews. They now need to complete their HSC and receive a satisfactory ATAR mark to keep their Early Entry position. Three students are still waiting on an early entry result, which should be announced

YEAR 8 LEARN HOW TO BE ROCK MUSO’S! Year 8 Music students have been learning the basics of guitar playing and notation as well as the role of the guitar in Rock bands. Here they are trying to nail a riff or a chord progress and strumming pattern. The students will be playing the song 'From Little Things Big Things Grow' (Paul Kelly/Kev Carmody) as part of a unit on contemporary Aboriginal & Torres Islander musicians.

YEAR 11 MEET THE CHOCOLATE STARFISH Year 11 had a fantastic time with Adam Thompson last Monday. He joined our Year 11 class and shared his knowledge and understanding of vocal technique and performing. His enthusiasm and experience was inspiring. Adam’s quote of the day was ‘To be a legend in life, forget embarrassment.’ The students recorded their voices singing the ITU World championship Anthem that will be used at the Opening Ceremony on Thursday 17Th November. Each student recorded the whole song individually, and Glen the producer pictured here, will edit the final production. We hope to hear the final master by next week.

SPORT K-6 SWIMMING PROGRAM SPLASHES IN

The JCS Swimming program commenced on Monday 17 October and will continue for seven lessons concluding on Dec 1 The teaching staff have worked together to provide a subsidised program for all JCS primary school students to learn to swim. Swimming Programs are not currently compulsory for NSW schools however JCS sees the importance of teaching our children to swim based on the towns proximity to the lake and that many children visit the coast each summer. To support this, Year 2 students are not charged for the swimming program to ensure there are no barriers to learning the swim. Students participate in the program every year in Term 3 of primary school. Each year the program aims to improve the swimming strokes and ability of students whatever level they are at. Swim coach and teacher Greg Cox believes that there would not be one Year 6 student who could not swim 2 laps of the Jindabyne Pool! For the older primary school students, the program also provides them with lifesaving and rescue skills and techniques and the coaches are always keeping an eye out for talented swimmers who may have an interest in joining the swim squad. Mr Cox is also pleased with the swim teachers and the progress being made by the students. On Wednesday the Kindergarten classes had their first lessons on improving water skills and pushing comfort zones in the water in a controlled environment.

JCS ATHLETICS TEAM MAKE THE STATE FINAL
