Principal’s Message to the Graduating Students Dear Year 6 Leavers,

It has been a pleasure to be a part of your final year at West Leeming Primary School, as you have been a wonderful group of students. We have had a great year together. If we think in terms of Edward DeBono’s Six Thinking Hats, which you know I love as I use them at assembly, if I use the yellow hat, you have had lots of positive learning experiences. However, sometimes you have to wear the black hat and take some safe risks. These can be seen as opportunities for new learning;; just like that feeling you had on camp when you may have completed an activity that you were frightened to do but went ahead and did it anyway and felt like a champion afterwards (there’s that Red Hat!).

Some white hat facts include events and milestones that we have achieved this year such as attending the Leaders’ Day, what a great idea to send you all! All those special fundraising events you are part of as well as sport days! And what about all those learning experiences since Kindergarten. I hope you have some special, lifelong memories.

My favourite part of the year was the lead up to the STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics) afternoon. All those creative ideas that you generated where it could be said metaphorically speaking you wore the Green Hat!

So in summary, using the blue hat, my gift to you is this thinking framework, which you can apply to all your work or use when you come to a crossroad in life and have to make a big decision:

Thank you to you all, I have really enjoyed being your Principal this year. I would like to wish you all the best for the next chapter of your life. Miss Anne Christodulou Principal http://www.mkk.school.nz/Site/Learning_MKK/Thinking_MKK/De_Bono_s_Thinking_Hats.ashx

Term one Swimming Carnival took on a new look this year with a slightly different format with some novelty events added to try to increase participation. The Carnival went well and will be even better next year with some further tweaking.

Results were -‐ Curtin first followed by Murdoch then Canning then Hackett.

First term is also Summer Carnival time for selected Year fives and sixes. Unfortunately, a couple of schools have dropped out of our competition which has left only three schools. Nevertheless, competition was still keen and the students had a great day. Cricketers had a particularly good day with both the girls and boy’s teams winning their competition. WLPS teams made it into the finals in the other sports of Basketball, T Ball and Volleyball.

A similar interschool carnival was held in second term – the Winter Carnival involving the sports of Netball AFL, Soccer and Flag Rugby. The netballers proved to be very dominant in this competition by winning both the A and B divisions, a great achievement.

Third term means running weather which is a favourite sport of many students. The school cross country is a dress rehearsal and selection race for the interschool carnival where positions on the team are keenly sought after. WLPS is traditionally strong in the Cross-‐Country event and the depth of runners enabled our school to win the Interschool competition again this year. It is worth noting that WLPS has won the last 10 consecutive Interschool cross country competitions, an amazing achievement by our runners.

Fourth term was busy with preparation for the Athletics Carnivals, another eagerly awaited event. Results for the Inter House competition were-‐ 1st Hackett, 2nd Canning, and tied 3rd for Curtin and Murdoch.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the P&C for their continued support of the Phys Ed program. Their fundraising work enable them to purchase two new sun shelters for our carnivals and also school sport shirts for interschool events.

A lot of our activities could not take place without the support of the many parents who help out in various ways throughout the sporting year. A big thank you to parent helpers, your efforts are very much appreciated.

Alan Placanica,

Phys. Ed. Department.

As another year comes to a close we reflect on our accomplishments. This year the music room has been bursting with the sounds of percussion instruments, the band, the string ensemble, ukuleles, recorders, and the singing voices of the choir. The students here at West Leeming Primary School have filled the air with music, and it has been an eventful and rewarding time. In April, the school band and choir performed a number of songs during the annual Anzac Ceremony. I found it a pleasure to share some Canadian songs with the school and felt honoured to be a part of the event. The choir then began preparations for the Sing Festival which took place at UWA. The group put on a stunning performance with songs that were unique amongst the local choirs and received top adjudication marks – way to go! The band and choir also prepared a concert at the school Fete which was an exciting event for the school and community. In December, the choir will be sharing some Christmas Carols with the residents at the Leeming Retirement Village. Chantel Lai (Year 6) has been accompanying the choir all year and will be joining them on the carolling excursion. The Instrumental School of Music has also had an eventful year. Mr Millar graciously took on the organization of a number of special intimate recitals for all the instrument groups. Students put on beautiful performances for their family and friends.

I have felt right at home here at West Leeming, even without the snow! Parents, students and staff have been amazing in welcoming me into this community. The students at West Leeming have incredible gifts and should continue to pursue their dreams in the music world. I will be going back to my home with new ideas and perspectives that I can’t wait to share. Thank you for all of the support and eagerness to learn! What an incredible year this has been. It has been a successful one and it is all due to the dedication and spirit of the students. Good luck to the graduates of 2016!! Make sure to follow your dreams, you never know where they will take you.

“You’ve come a long way from where you began” – Wiz Khalifa (Leaver’s song 2016)

Jennifer Higgins Music, Choir, and Band Teacher Canadian Exchange Teacher

I was delighted to be back at West Leeming Primary School after a year away in Canada. The Choir, Band and String ensembles performed beautifully at the school’s ANZAC Day service. Holly Papaphotis and her mother played the “Last Post” on the trumpet at this event and many people commented on their performance.

The choir, which is for students from Years 4-‐6, had a mammoth task ahead of them as it prepared for the Massed Choir Festival, which was held at the Perth Concert Hall for the first time. Jenna Rodgers and Tilly Bunnage auditioned for compere and soloist parts respectively and Tilly was successful in performing two solo parts on the night. The Massed Choir Festival is a wonderful opportunity for students to sing with 450 other students, after the many months of learning the words and parts of 10 songs. This was followed by the Christmas Choir and Year 3s were invited to join.

Recorder is taught in Year 4 and at the end of first semester, a recorder concert was held in the Undercover Area for family, friends and other students. This gave them an opportunity to show their developing skills to them.

Year 5 student are taught the ukulele in second semester and already there are some stars in the classes. Hopefully they will be able to perform for the school towards the end of the year.

Instrumental teachers from The Instrumental Music Schools Service (IMSS) teach a wide range of instruments to students selected from Year 3 to 5. At present, there are 73 students learning either violin, viola, cello, clarinet, flute, trumpet or classical guitar. These students were able to perform at the school’s Recital Night in August at Leeming Senior High School, together with the band and string ensembles. Students who learn instruments outside of the school are also offered places in the ensembles.

For the last assembly for the year, students were entertained by some Year 6 students in the musical drama of “A Christmas Puzzle” which is a crazy play about various Christmas characters. The choir, band and string ensemble helped in the joyous occasion as well as the students, parents and teachers of the school.

The Year 6 students sang Shine Your Way at their graduation, which has words of wisdom for them as they begin their next journey in life…high school.

Thank you to all of the parents who have supported and assisted in any way with the music program, either by encouraging their children to practice, carting musical instruments to and from the high school, coming on the buses or being part of an audience. It is greatly appreciated.

Thank you and Merry Christmas,

Rosemary Mathie, Music Specialist

Bonjour tout le monde, Teaching French at WLPS this year has been a privilege. It was a valuable experience for me, but getting the opportunity to know each and every one of you has been my utmost pleasure. Thank you. 2017 was a busy year in the French classroom. With so many projects, assignments and events, we have learnt about France, its language and culture and also its influence on other countries. We have seen numerous students excel in their studies and discover a passion for languages. Year 6 even had the opportunity to receive a visit from some French exchange students from the Toulouse (a city south of France). I would love to see some of our students travel to France or another Francophone country. As my time at WLPS draws to an end, I would like to wish all the graduating students of 2017 all the best in their future endeavours. I also wish all current and future students of French “Bon Courage” as they progress in their studies. Bonnes vacances, Melanie Brandenburg Teacher of French

The P&C have had a huge and productive year. From the last report in 2016 where we said farewell to some long-‐term members, and welcomed some new parents into roles, until now, we have had so many fantastic fundraisers and events.

Our Discos and Safety House events, Mothers and Father’s Day stalls, Special Lunch order days, Election day sausage sizzle, Hot Cross bun stall, Sports day cake stall, book stall and sausage sizzle, Entertainment Book fundraiser and Welcome day BBQ have all contributed to our funds and have assisted us not only in providing new resources for the teachers and students, but have given everyone an opportunity to be part of our fabulous WLPS community.

We have implemented our online ordering systems for both the Uniform Shop and the Canteen.

There have been new committees established, Sustainability and the Costume shop, and the Uniform and costume shops were swapped out to make them more viable and accessible.

We are looking forward to the basketball court resurfacing and the Library refurbishment, both huge projects which we are proud to be associated with, as we know how much the children will enjoy them.

We have also funded new shade tents which were well utilized at our sports carnival, music software and instruments, Interschool sports tops and Performing Arts uniforms, laptops and printers for the Uniform shop and Canteen, library books, resource books, a remembrance plaque, and Graduation book prizes to name a few.

A huge thanks to all the parents, teachers, leadership team and students who have been so vital in our success and support us so passionately.

A personal thanks to all my fantastic team, Rebecca Cox, Priscilla Dreghorn, Renee Au and Candice Barker, as well as all the Committee Convenors, members and parents who attend the meetings. Your support and hard work is so appreciated, and I am so grateful.

Thank you to our outgoing Treasurer Renee Au. Your tireless efforts to perfect our finances and ensure the smooth running of all our processes has been amazing. Good luck in everything you do in the future, and a big welcome to Candice Barker who stepped into the role. Thank you both.

Looking ahead to 2018, on behalf of all the Office Bearers I would like to thank you all for a fantastic year, and I am looking forward to passing the torch to a brand new Executive committee.

Over and out.

Christi Treby, P&C President
