Kellogg Middle School Newsletter - March 2016

Principal’s Perspective:

Happy March! As we look forward to warmer weather, the Kellogg staff is also excited for a busy spring! On Thursday,

March 10, all 7th grade students will participate in a Youth Frontiers Courage Retreat at the Century High School Na-

tional Volleyball Center. Youth Frontiers is a national organization based in Minneapolis and Omaha, whose mission

“is to partner with schools to build communities where students thrive socially, emotionally and academically.” The

Youth Frontiers Courage Retreat is a “day to inspire students to follow their hearts instead of the crowd, use moral cour-

age and make responsible decisions despite their fears.” In short, the Courage Retreat is a day designed to help our stu-

dents treat one another with a greater sense of respect, understand how to stand up to and respond to the negative influ-

ences of bullying and other unwelcome behaviors, and to prepare them to be outstanding school-community leaders as

they move toward becoming eighth graders. For more information about Youth Frontiers or to learn more about the

Courage Retreat, please visit YF on the web at www.youthfrontiers.org/courage-retreat/

Thank you to everyone who replied to our Kellogg Parent/Guardian survey. We had an outstanding number of respond-

ers. We appreciate your insights and we’ll be using this feedback data to guide us as we work to make Kellogg an even

better learning community. I’m excited to begin sharing some of these improve-

ments with you in the months ahead!

Finally, please know that I am always available to assist with any concerns, ques-

tions you may have – or anything related to Kellogg Middle School! Please feel

free to contact me via phone or email, or simply stop by the Kellogg office. I’m

happy to be of assistance and I look forward to speaking with you!

Announcements:

Middle School Honors Classes Kellogg will be offering Middle School Honors classes for 2016-17 for 7th and 8th grade students who are ready for additional challenge in English, Science or Social Studies. The standards addressed in MS Honors Classes will be the same as grade level classes; however, the class will move at a faster pace, go into greater depth and require a greater degree of independence on the part of the student. These courses are not intended to assign MORE homework, but homework matched to the students’ instructional level. The MS Honors Classes are not high school classes taught at the middle school; therefore, a student will NOT earn a high school credit or a high school grade. Scheduling conflicts may occur, but we will make every attempt to honor your child’s request by enrolling him/her in at least one MS Honors class. Process

RAMP stands for Rochester Accelerated Math Program. RAMP is designed to meet the needs of high ability math students. Incoming 6th grade students who need to make up the Orleans Hanna test given in the elementary schools in March or students seeking to test out of a year of math and accelerate should contact Cindy Martenson [email protected] as soon as possible. Math Testing Dates are June 10th at 9:00 a.m. at Kellogg or August 4th at 9:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. at Edison. Students must register to take a test by contacting Cindy Martenson. Please register before June 10, if possible, because we have limited access to email over the summer. UMTYMP (University of Minnesota Talented Youth Math Program) provides a challenging opportunity for Minnesota's talented math students. The highly acceler-ated courses are specially designed to provide these students with an intense academic experience that will stimulate their mathematical interest and abilities. The program is offered through the University of Minnesota Math Center for Educational Programs, with support from the State of Minnesota. The application for the high school entrance point of UMTYMP Rochester, a program for gifted and talented youth in mathematics, is now available for current grade 5th-7th students at:

Parents keep checking our purple team website for homework/assignments and Skyward for current grades. Students should be using their planners to keep track of homework and deadlines.

As always, the team of teachers encourages parents to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

The next month has historically been difficult academically for many students. A little “cabin fever,” battles with cold and flu viruses, and the daily grind of school combine to make the completion of assignments a little more challenging for students. Please help your student with this potential problem by making sure he/she is keeping his/her student planner up to date, and that they are setting aside some time for homework on a daily basis. It is also a good time to check that your son/daughter has the pens, pencils, and paper supplies that he or she needs for school.
