The Bible as Literature: Early Hebrew Scriptures These four sessions will examine some of the most important stories of Judeo-Christian culture: the Creation; the Flood; the Patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; Joseph; Moses and the Exodus. We will read and discuss the first two books of the Hebrew Scriptures, Genesis and Exodus. People may read whatever version of the Bible they prefer. The course is not faith-based and is respectful of all faiths.

Historic Roots of Our Community: From Fort Snelling to Suburbs Early Growth to Community: A Distinctive Sense of PlaceExplore development from Fort Snelling, Saint Anthony Falls and south to Minneapolis neighborhoods and first ring suburbs of Richfield Edina and Saint Louis Park. Learn about the people, events and places whose stories are “hiding in plain sight”.

Tom Balcom is a life-long resident of south Minneapolis “on the borders” of Minnehaha Creek. He writes about local history and conducts tours.

From Country Estates to NeighborhoodFollow the market roads from Minneapolis to Edina and Eden Prairie past the grand estates of Col. King’s Lyndale and Jonathan Grimes’ Lake Calhoun Nursery. The communities of Linden Hills and Morningside that we know today had their roots in the vision of these leaders and have been shaped by landscape, transportation and the expansion of the metropolitan area.

Peter Sussman grew up in Linden Hills and is currently an Edina resident along an old market road. Architect and community historian, he leads walking tours and organizes local history programs.

Transit Pathways to Community GrowthA rolling snapshot of the when the streetcar system shaped the growth and character of the entire metropolitan area. From steam Motor Line and electric Great White Way to Lake Minnetonka to the Dan Patch commuter train, Aaron Isaacs will describe the history of transportation in Edina and the surrounding areas.

Following a 33 year career with Metro Transit, Aaron Isaacs has co-authored Twin Cities by Trolley—The Streetcar Era in Minneapolis and St. Paul and is editor of the magazines Railway Museum Quarterly and Twin City Lines.

All That Jazz!An historical overview of the development of jazz from the “Call and Response” singing of the slaves on the plantation through the “Roaring Twenties” and the growth of the ensemble bands in New York and Chicago. Classes will include multimedia presentation illustrating the people and places of the era, accompanied by recordings. Instructor will play the piano to demonstrate various songs and musical techniques. First class —Plantation Roots to Ragtime. Learn about how Jazz began, trace the music back to the rhythms of West Africa and the work songs of the plantation. We’ll see how the minstrel shows and cakewalks led to ragtime and the vaudeville era. Second class—The Jazz Age to the Big Band Era. Learn about how Jazz came “up the river” to Chicago and on to New York. We’ll explore the early career of Louis Armstrong. We’ll also see how the big Harlem bands eventually led to the swing bands of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller.

King Harald—Long Live the KingOdell Bjerkness, has created an engaging course based on his book, The Prince and the Nanny, that pulls together the history of the monarchy, the changes occurring in

Scandinavia over the past 100 years and the political climate in Norway from 1900 through WW II. Odells’ aunt served as the nanny to The King and the book is based on her diary written while serving the royal family. The King and Queen of Norway will visit Minnesota in October.

Sports Talk with Mike MaxMike is no stranger to Minnesota sports. He hosts WCCO “Sports Tonight with Mike Max” on WCCO Radio as well as “Life to the Max” on WCCO CBS television. A true Minnesotan, Mike grew up in Gaylord, Minn. and played football, basketball and baseball. Mike attended Hamline University and furthered his talents on the court and on the diamond, playing basketball and baseball for the Pipers.
