Principles of DesignBy Camille Saunders
Before I begin
I would like everyone to know that all of the "My ..." pictures
were convienently taken at a "Rooms to go".
Those pictures are not from the internet.
Emphasis
• My definition: something that makes a point (stands out) intentionally in the your perspective in and design
• Actual Defenition of Emphasis: is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the artist
will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture,
shape, etc.
This photo is an example of Emphasis
because the room is all white and black
with a colorful picture behind the table
and the picture is the first thing your eye
turns to.
This is an example of emphasis because the
library has minimal color it has white with a
little bit of red but there is a big and bright,
pink splatter couch that draws the attention.
My Emphasis
I choose these
for my example
of Emphasis
because there
are designs in
this room that
draw the eye
directly to it.
Contrast
• My definition: The thing that stand out and is opposite.
• Actual Definition of Contrast: refers to the arrangement of opposite elements (light vs. dark colors,
rough vs. smooth textures, large vs. small shapes, etc.) in a piece so as to create visual interest,
excitement and drama.
This room is an example of Contrast because the because
there is white wall paint and flooring and to give the room
a little edge there is the use of a bright, vibrant Yellow
This is an example of Contrast because
the room is really dark and uses a
vibrant orange to contrast how dark the
room already is
My Contrast
I choose this living room set as an
example of contrast because the
designer used a lot od white, so to
contrast all that white they used a
dark floor and light and dark carpet
wit darcker or shinier assecory to
make the room not look like a pshyc
box.
Balance
• My definition: using a good deal of color to
balance out one color used in excess.
• Actual definition: the visual equilibrium of a
room.
This is an example of balance because the room has
light wall tones so it gets balanced out with dark
fireplace accents, carpets and accessories to give the
room a wow factor
This room is an example of Balance
because the room has white walls but
uses hippy and up beat colors to not
make an all white room but the colors
are balanced using colors that don’t
over power the white and make it look
like you're in a clown box.
My Balance
I used this a balance because
although this is only an
example of symetrical balance
it is an example of balance. the
deigner used an asymetrical
couch and aded a designed
pillow with symetry to change
the rooms visual equilibrium
Harmony
My defiition: Getting two colors that work together to give the room the feeling you
want.
Actual Definition: the sensitive balance of variety and unity
This is an example of harmony
because the three colors green , brown
and white give the room a bright
comfortable and edgy. the colors work
together nicely balancing each other
out.
This is an example of harmony
because the purple and white
colors and incorporated together
in a way making the room feel
comfortable and balanced out
My Harmony
I took this picture because
The warm color scheme used
is yellow, orange and red give
the room a warm , cozy and
inviting feeling. these colors
are working together to give
the room the feeling the
designer the feel he/she
wanted
Proportion and Scale
• My definition: using furniture and
accessories in moderation to not make a room
seem to big or too small.
• Actual Definition: the relationship of size
between two objects.
These are examples of Proportion and scale because room and is furniture is are proportioned and scaled out to give
the room a nice look but also make it functional and make things that are meant to be reached, reached and object
meant to be seen veiwable.
My Proportion and Scale
This room I choose is a great
example of Proportion and scale
the designer used bigger seating
furnishing and went with a
smaller coffee table to make the
room look bigger although the
seating is taking up a good deal
of space
Repetition
• Actual definition: the simplest way to attain rhythm
and can be achieved by repeating any of the elements
of design or other design concepts in an organized
and regular way.
This is an example of repetition because both pictures use a repeated object. In
the picture on the left the bar uses repetition of bar stools counters lighting
fixtures, and the back walls design. In the picture on the right the scenery uses
the repeated rectangular arch ways.
My Repetition
I choose this loveseat as an example of
repetition because there is a pattern
that continuously repeats on the sofas
Fabric.
Rhythm
Actual Definition: repetition of line, form,
texture and color
These are an example of Rhythm because
both pictures repeat a lines in a pattern. In
the bottom left picture the diner has a
unique ceiling of wavy beams that are
repeated. In the right picture there are
patterns on the wall that repeat lines in
different lengths widths and curvature that
gives the pattern a rhythm.
My Rhythm
I choose these two examples of Rhythm because the flow of the design of the sofa
and shelf. Both the sofa and the shelf give off an rhythmic flow. Just as a person's ear
follow the rhythmic pattern of a song; these to pieces of furniture make the eye
follow the pattern.
