PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dwayne Hopwood Principal
I have been visiting all our local Primary Schools over the past week with Mr Tyler (the 2018 Year Adviser) and a collection of boys from Years 7, 8 and 11. It has been a wonderful leadership experience for the boys speaking about their experiences of high school to Year 6. It has also been great to speak with Principals and teachers about how highly our school is regarded in the community. More of the boys will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills on Monday evening at our Open Night. Ashtag Edition Date Change This week’s edition of Ashtag has jumped a week. This is to make sure that the edition number of the newsletter matches the official Department of Education calendar. According to the calendar, Week 1 occurred before the boys returned to school and consisted of only one day – the Staff Development Day. Our first edition of Ashtag was published in Week 2.

stood in ascending order of their respective hand area.
They noticed a correlation between the area of their
hand and their height which is to be further studied in
the next topic, Data Analysis.

DIFFERENT VOICES, DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES
Year 10 students are studying narrative voice this term. They have been analysing texts and deconstructing language to discuss the creation of unique voices. 10G has been studying the classic text To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Through our discussion of voice in this text that was published almost 60 years ago we have discussed the relevance of this text in the 21st century.
This term in English so far, we have been discovering voice and perspective. Through the unique voice and perspectives in the novel To Kill A Mocking Bird we have been exploring prejudice in early 20th century Alabama. Throughout the novel we have examined how Scout’s perspective expands and her preconceived biases both evolve and dissolve as she learns more about society. Scout grows and her opinions grow with her, yet whilst she as a child barely understands her world, older Scout explains her thoughts in an articulate and informative way, helping the reader digest the complex ideas. By Xavier Broe - Year 10 This term in English we have studied the unit Different Voices, Different Perspective. In this unit we have explored different voices and perspectives in the text To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. We have studied important ideas such as racism, prejudice, segregation and personal integrity, through different characters such as Scout, Tom Robinson, Atticus Finch and Boo Radley. YEAR 8 STUDYING THE HUMAN BODY IN SCIENCE
Students have had the chance to dissect a chicken wing to investigate about the muscle and skeletal system. We found that the structure of a chicken wing is very similar to a human’s arm!
Interesting facts about the
Human Body
In a lifetime, a human produces enough saliva to fill two swimming pools
A human sheds 600,000 skin particles every hour
A human baby has sixty bones more than an adult
The human pelvis is the largest bone in the human body. It is constructed stronger than a wall of a cranium, meaning skull
Our heart beats around 100000 times every day or about 30 minutes
The skull is full of tiny holes called foramina An adult human is made of around 70,000,000,000,000,000 atoms

TROPFEST LOOKOUT!
Being Human Film Festival is the next big thing!
Ashfield Boys film makers are busily preparing their entries for the Being Human Film Festival. This inaugural event has been organised by the combined effort of Ashfield Boys and Canterbury Girls High Schools P and C. The boys from Years 7 and 8, with the help of Mr Richardson, have developed their concept for their short film and are in the process of filming. One of the key features of their film narrative is to focus on images and have minimal dialogue in the portrayal of the concept. As part of their investigation they have explored areas such as prejudice and mental health in their collaboration. We look forward to the premier at the festival.

BUILDING ON LEADERSHIP SKILLS IN THE SRC
The SRC was offered to be part of a pilot program of an idea generation and team work skill building program called Hack In A Box. We are currently half way through the program and have learned some great skills. For example, how to come up with new ideas and not be constrained by pre-existing assumptions; how to get the most out of every member of a team in a brainstorming session; tools to help generate a rich and viable idea into a “do-able” reality and many more. These tools are valuable in many areas of our lives and particularly so because employers are looking for people that are innovative and can drive team work. We have been really lucky to be a part of this initiative. Will keep you posted.

THE SEMI FINAL RESULTS- HAWK'S EYE ANALYSIS
Here we go again Astonishingly, a clear blue sky above Mason Park wasn't hiding anything new. Our U15's B Oztag team was efficiently converting the sun's energy into mechanical movements. Even the grass was trembling at the thought that our boys might have a winning march on it. The air was conveying a message from a former coach Ms Durand, "Stay focused and play for each other!". From the start of the game our boys imposed authority, scored a few unanswered tries and in a very calm manner closed down the game. Nick Sakogiannis was a stand out player who controlled the ruck and scored four brilliant individual tries. The semi final win has ensured a highly anticipated third consecutive Grand Final match against Randwick, the team who traditionally play the best football against the other best team in our Zone. Ball in, ball out Our U14's basketball team played an incredible first half against the best and the only undefeated team in our zone - North Sydney. The half time result was 21-23 after our boys missed the last four free throws. In the second half, the ball inexplicably refused to listen to our players while the opposition players converted easy chances. At the end of the day the better team progressed to the grand final. Our coach, Mr Tyler, was so proud of his team efforts, concluding the season successfully. We have to acknowledge the fact that a high percentage of our team is made of players who are either rugby or football players. However, they wore our jersey so proudly and always gave their absolute best. "There was nothing more I could have asked of them," summarised the season’s proud coach Tyler.

It wasn't meant to be On paper, our Oztag 1st grade team was guaranteed a win. However, the defending champions knew the task wouldn't be that easy as their opponent had nothing to lose. The start of the game was the one you can only dream of. Try after try, and within the first ten minutes of the game we were 4-0 up. Then the unexpected happened and the wheels started to roll in a different direction. Numerous dropped balls on the opposition try line were severely punished and with 2 minutes to go both teams were locked at 6-6. We had to take a risk, which did not pay off. Pressure too high Two weeks ago our Basketball 2nd grade team played a regular season match against North Sydney at ABHS gymnasium. In a game full of twists both teams had ups and downs. Our team was trailing almost the entire match before having a strong finish. With the score locked at 33 all we had the last possession of the game to score points and cause the major upset. The ball bounced off the ring ensuring the North Sydney team stayed undefeated the entire season. Apart from a strong start in which Brendon Tun scored two 3-point shots, the semi final clash against the same opponent was a more one sided game. North Sydney's players were dominant in defence and powerful in counter-attack. However, this did not discourage our boys from fighting for the entire 40 minutes. Half way through the second half North Sydney had only a 7 point lead, which our team could not reduce any more due to five consecutive turnovers. The tiny opportunity to have a close finish mounted too much pressure on our boys which they were not able to absorb. PDHPE Faculty -effort creates success
