Historic Tour: The Joseph Manigault House Cost: $10 per person, Historic House $10 per person, MuseumTime: Opens 10:00 AM, last tour begins at 4:30 PM

The Joseph Manigault House, one of Charles-ton’s most exquisite antebellum structures, reflects the urban lifestyle of a wealthy rice-planting family

and the enslaved African Americans who lived there.

Built in 1803, this National Historic Landmark and elegant example of Federal period architecture, was designed for Manigault by his brother Gabriel, who is also credited with designing Charleston’s current City Hall. A striking spiral staircase accents the impressive central hall which features rooms that contain historic pieces from the Museum’s collections, including American, English and French furniture dating to the early 19th century.

Historic Tour: Aiken-Rhett House Museum Cost: $10 per personTime: Opens 10:00 AM, last tour begins at 4:15 PM

The Aiken- Rhett House Museum, c. 1820, is unique for many reasons, including remaining in the hands of family descendants for 142 years! Charleston merchant John Robinson built the house in 1820. Later, in 1827, William Aiken Sr. an Irish immigrant who later was one of the city’s leading merchants became the new owner. In 1833, his son, young William Aiken, Jr. and new bride made the house their primary residence. After extensive renovations, they created one of the most impressive residences in Charleston. William Aiken, Jr. was a successful businessman, rice planter, distinguished politician, and later became governor of South Carolina. In 1858, Governor Aiken commissioned his cousin, Joseph Daniel Aiken, to design and oversee construction of an art gallery, the only one of its kind in the city. Today, many of the exquisite objects acquired by the Aikens during their travels throughout Europe remain on display.
