Report of the Financial AdvisoryCommittee for 1973'

The portfolio's market value at the end of Sep-tember 28, 1973, was 25 percent above its totaladjusted cost. Securities in the portfolio are listedin the Table. The income estimated for fiscal 1973from securities represenls a 5.7 percent return onthe cost of the portfolio and a 4.6 percent return onits market value.

A special situation developed in Control Datawhich indicated a favorable future, and, on the ad-vice of Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, and Smith,100 shares were purchased. The special situationevolved. but the market value could not be main-tained in the general depression of the market whichfollowed. The portfolio was reviewed in detail onJanuary 31, 1973, by Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, and Smith. Sale of some $78,500 worth of stock wasrecommended but not initiated because of the pre-cipitous drop in market values. At what appearedto be the bottom of the market cycle, purchase of100 shares of General Motors was made with ac-cumulated funds. In the interest of security, themonies of the Jewell J. Glass Legacy, as the initialpart of the Membership Assistance Fund, were in-vested in a bond bringing 8/+ percent interest.

The Committee has undertaken a study of varioustypes of organizations with the aim of obtaining pro-fessional management for the Society's portfolio inaccord with the wishes of the Council; a small finan-cial management group was recommended as bestmeeting the needs of the Society.

Report of the Editor for 1973

The change to the new format was accomplishedsmoothly with the January-February (1973) num-ber. A shortage in paper stock occasionally forcedThe William Byrd Press to print our journal on thestock available rather than on that ordered. A tdtallack of paper actually held up printing of the July-August issue for a week.

Effort has been made to achieve higher qualityand uniformity of the author-supplied tables whichwe photograph and reproduce.

The number of papers received and processed re-mains about the same as in recent years. Statisticsare given in the accompanying table.

A summary of elapsed time isas given in the accompanying table.

On behalf of the Society, the Editor expresses hisgratitude to the Board of Associate Editors who con-tribute so gteatly to The Americwt Mineralogist andin particular to retiring Associate Editors, Donald M.Henderson and Paul H. Photograph ldentification Contest

At the GSA meetings in Dallas, November 1973,the Mineralogical Society of America displayed thephotographs on the following pages in an impromptuidentification contest. Visitors to our booth wereasked to identify the rocks or minerals in these pic-tures. The largest number of correct identificationswas for photograph number 8, but no one got num-ber 1 (a blow below the belt). Photos 2 and 3 werein color. (All photographs are printed approximatelyVz ther display dimensions).

In ease you would like to try your skill, the photo-graphs (and photographers) are identified on page380.
