Chianti has some of the most varied soils in the world.
Cosimo III, Grand Duke of Tuscany, officially
delimited the Chianti production zone of
Chianti wine.
Creation of the Consortium for the
Protection of Chianti wine and its mark
of origin; the trademark chosen is the
Black Rooster.
The adjective “Classico” is added by
ministerial decree to distinguish the original
Chianti from the wine made outside the
territory delimited in 1716.
Chianti Classico obtains DOCG status
(Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination
of Origin), the highest recognition for
premium Italian Wines.
Chianti Classico becomes an
independent DOCG.
A change to an Italian law bans the
production of Chianti wine in Chianti
Classico production zone.
The assembly of the Consorzio Vino
Chianti Classico members approves a
set of changes to production regulations
leading to an authentic revamping of the
denomination. Gran Selezione is born.
Gran Selezione introduced as premium tier
within Chianti Classico DOCG appellation.
The brilliant and long-lived red wines known throughout the world as Chianti
have helped to build Tuscany into one of the most important wine regions on
the planet. But amazingly, after 300 years of history, Chianti still holds a world of
discovery for wine drinkers because Chianti is not just one wine. This booklet is
an introduction to 9 Chianti wines everyone should know.

9 CHIANTISPISA
The
CHIANTI CLASSICO DOCGThe appellation corresponding to the
historical center of the Tuscan region that
stretches from Florence in the North to
Sienna in the South. Chianti wines have been
produced here for hundreds of years.
CHIANTI DOCGThe appellation that covers the entire Chianti
region in central Tuscany, including Chianti
Classico DOCG as well as the expanded
vineyard area that was planted beyond the
borders of the classico zone in the 20th
century.
MONTALBANOSituated on the lime-rich hills west of
Florence, these wines are light and fruit-
driven with well-balanced acidity.
RUFINAPerhaps the best known of the seven
subzones with a continental climate and high
altitude. Rufina wines are well-structured
and, at their best, rival the top wines from
Chianti’s Classico zone.
COLLI FIORENTINILiterally the “hills of Florence,” this zone
produces round, fresh, and somewhat
fruit-driven Chianti that is easy to drink.
MONTESPERTOLIThe smallest subzone within the Chianti
DOCG, which produces a particularly ripe
Sangiovese for balanced, lush wines.
COLLINE PISANENearly in the shadow of Pisa’s leaning tower,
and situated upon hills that are lower and
closer to the sea, Colline Pisane wines are
delicate and dry, with a fruity aroma when
young.
COLLI ARETINISourced from vineyards near the medieval
city of Arezzo, Colli Aretini wines are
quintessential food wines—bright and
charming with zesty acidity.
COLLI SENESIWines from the hills encircling the once
powerful city of Siena that reflect their
southern location in the Chianti zone with
ripeness, structure, and silky tannins.
