Reagents for detecting fetal erythrocytes and their count in mother’s bloodstream

HemoGnost Fetal kit

Erythrocytes of adults contain hemoglobin A that cannot be retained in erythrocytes after applying an acid reagent. Fetal erythrocytes contain fetal hemoglobin F resistant to acid reagent, enabling it to be retained within the cell and stained with a counterstain. BioGnost’s HemoGnost Fetal kit enables clear diff erentiation between colorless erythrocytes of adults (so-called erythrocyte ghosts) and fetal erythrocytes (stained rose-pink). That enables red blood cell counting and quantifying the fetal-maternal RBC ratio.

Transfer of Rh positive fetus’ erythrocytes into Rh negative mother’s bloodstream may cause specifi c Rh antibodies to form in maternal bloodstream. In subsequent pregnancies these erythrocytes are transferred to fetus’ bloodstream via placenta. If the fetus is Rh positive, mother’s antibodies will attack fetus’ Rh positive erythrocytes and cause hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN).
