What will I study?

GCSE Single Award Science is a two year unitised course. It is a good

choice for you if you want a broad overview of science to GCSE level

but don’t want to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics in detail. GCSE

Single Award Science builds on the science you have studied at Key

Stage 3. However, because this GCSE is designed for breadth of

study rather than depth it is not intended for progression to an A-

level course.

What is GCSE Science Single Award ?

Students who study Single Award Science have a scientific foundation

which is beneficial to those intending to study NVQs or

apprenticeships in vocational areas; e.g. Beauty, Hairdressing,

Childcare, Meat Technology, Electrical Installation, Plumbing and

Catering & Hospitality.

Students will learn important skills such as working with data, problem

solving, investigating methods and drawing conclusions.

What can I do with this qualification?

Single Award Science is assessed throughout the course by three 1

hour written exams in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and a practical

skills assessment and written exam.

Students will be challenged to maximise their potential and will be

entered for the tier which best suits their needs and abilities.

opportunity to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding in a

range of key concepts within Biology, Chemistry and Physics and builds

upon the Key Stage 3 curriculum. Learners will study three modules:

Physical Processes, Life Processes and Living Things and Materials and

Chemical Processes.

All modules are internally set, internally marked and externally

moderated. Grading of this qualification is Pass/Fail.

A Pass is equivalent to a Grade B at GCSE.

Students who study OCN NI Level 2 Applied Science can progress to

further qualifications in Applied Science at a higher level or to study

particular aspects of science in greater depth.

It also provides learners with the opportunity to acquire knowledge

and skills that would support progression to employment within the

Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) sector.

What can I do with this qualification?

This qualification will allow learners to further develop the following

skills:

and design to manufacture a quality technological product.

There is a large theory element in Yr12 which covers theory on

Product Design and Control Systems. Drawing and designing are both a

major part of the GCSE course.

What is Product Design?

Pupils who study Technology and Design can go on to study National

Diplomas or an NVQ in Engineering, Manufacturing, Construction,

Furniture Design, Product Design, Computer Aided Design or a skilled

trade apprenticeship as a Mechanical, Electrical or Craft Technician.
