Nathanson Hook Retractors CLINICAL APPLICATION TIPS

Tips for installing Hooks: • Establish visualization with a laparoscope. • Make 90 degree percutaneous incision with 5mm trocar, 2 fingers left of the mid-line sub-xiphoid. Surgeon can feel for the edge of the liver before making puncture (1) • Expand the hole with forceps to create a direct access point for the hook into the ab. cavity (2) • Remove the trocar, the hook will be inserted percutaneously • Insert the Hook with the neck perpendicular to the patient torso (3-4) • Slide the Hook underneath the liver (5) Tips for utilizing the FlexArms (6): • Bring the FlexArm closest to the patients head towards the proximal end of the Hook. • Slide the hexaganol Hook end into the distal end of the FlexArm and lock. Proceed to tighten the FlexArm cable from the large handle at the proximal end. • If using a Twin FAP System, bring the second FlexArm and attached the arm (with the already attached 72162) and connect to the laparoscope. • Tighten the large handle at the proximal end. Benefits: • Reduction of two assistants (one for liver retractor and one for scope management) • Surgeon has a controlled operating atmosphere (as seen in the video). • Atraumatic Liver retraction (as opposed to fan retractors or hand held retraction) • FlexArm creates a static monitor view while allows the surgeon to adjust the scope incrementally without having to untighten the arm. • Arm allows the surgeon to lower the liver for venous flow in longer cases. • Use of Nathanson Hook reduces the need for a lateral port (cost savings for hospital). • Hook design allows for the entire surface of the liver to be lifted, hence giving optimal vision of the esophagus and stomach.

FlexGuardTM SUMMARY OF BENEFITS

Effective - Saves Time The adhesive attachment of FlexGuardTM to the retractor blade ensures targeted protection throughout the surgery. Lap pads are difficult to place properly and tend to move. In addition, they are usually ineffective and need to be checked periodically which increases surgical time and presents challenges.

Improved Exposure The low profile FlexGuardTM is applied in line with the blade curvature essentially becoming part of the blade. Lap pads or sponges are bulky and can obstruct the surgical field.

Patient Safety FlexGuardTM applied to any retractor blade will protect vessels and nerves as well as reduce risk of injury to the liver and other organs. Used in place of lap pads and sponges, FlexGuardTM eliminates associated foreign debris, thus post-operative issues.

Better Outcomes FlexGuardTM may reduce post-operative inflammation, adhesions, neuropathies and chronic pain which will result in earlier ambulation, better diet tolerance – overall a more rapid recovery requiring less pain medication with a higher rate of patient satisfaction.
