Professional Reading Lists on the Navy MWR eLibary

How to find your Professional Reading List on the Navy MWR eLibrary:

• Both the CNO and USMC Commandant updated their Professional Reading list in 2014

• A lot of the message traffic has said you can read your books for free on NKO…kind of.

• Confused? We can help.

1. Login to NKO

www.nko.navy.mil was restricted to CAC & Pin access ONLY in 2013. This decision was made by Cyber Warfare. NGLP is currently working on a new library website which will restore access to non-CAC holding library customers.

2. Find the Library

Everyone’s NKO screen looks a little different depending on your location or rate. The five tabs across the top are ALWAYS the same. Click “REFERENCE” to find the MWR eLibrary.

3. Where are the books?

There’s more to your MWR eLibrary than just books. We’ve provided a browse menu on the left to help you find different subjects of interest or specific publication types. Click “E-Library – Audio & Ebooks” to find the book-centric resources.

4. That’s a lot of book choices!

Yep, we have more than just one Audio & Ebook service. Our largest collection of reading materials is the OverDrive collection. Best part of OverDrive – after you create a borrower’s account you don’t need to go through NKO!

5. Now where’s my list?

If you’re going to be checking books out it’s a good idea to log-in to OverDrive before your start browsing. Use the Account Icon or Sign In link at the top right. Still need an OverDrive account? Here’s how to get setup. The professional reading lists can be browsed with the “Featured Collections” lists at the top left. Click “Professional Reading Programs” to see all the available sea-service lists.

6. How do I check one out?

From the Professional Reading page you’ll see Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps reading lists, as well as titles on prior reading lists. To add a book to your wish list you can click it’s bookmark. You may begin reading (or listening to) a sample of the book with the icons in the top right. The display only shows a portion of each lists, for all the items available on a professional reading list click “view more.” To begin the check out process click on a cover.

7. Borrowing a book.

From the title details screen you’ll see information about the book: available formats, series, subject, and how many copies. Scrolling down you’ll see book recommendations, a synopsis of the book, and any information about the book’s file size and digital rights. You can also check out the book by clicking “Borrow”. The default loan period for Navy library customers is 10 days but we can change that with the link provided or update it permanently in our account settings.

8. Retrieve your copy

Your checked out book will appear on your bookshelf. The “My Account” information will list the number of remaining checkouts. Each user can have 10 items checked out at a time. You can return the title to the library, or select download and then confirm the file type you’d like to download.

That’s right! Skip NKO the next time you look for Professional Reading. Click the “Account” link at the top of the screen and follow the instructions. If you went through NKO this time you’ll see a New User account creation box. Fill it out with an email and password. Recommend you use a personal email, they change less frequently than military emails, and they’re easier to access off duty. Passwords must be at least 6 characters. Complete account creation steps can be found at: http://www.slideshare.net/NGLP/create-an-overdrive-account/

9. You said I didn’t have to use NKO again?

Happy Reading!

• Create your OverDrive account and skip NKO in the future by going directly to: http://navy.lib.overdrive.com

• We’re adding as many of the list titles as we can – not all the publishers sell ebooks and/or audiobooks to libraries.

• We’re always adding new content for fun, too. Check back often.
