ProficiencytestingisdefinedinISO/IEC17043astheevaluationofparticipantperformanceagainstpre-establishedcriteriabymeansof interlaboratorycomparisons.Theterm ExternalQualityAssessmentorEQAis oftenusedforproficiencytestinginthe medical/clinicalarea.

AFPS - Animal feeds scheme

TheAnimalFeedsProficiencyScheme(AFPS)isspecificallydesignedtomeettheneeds oflaboratoriesperformingchemicalor microbiologicalanalysisofanimalfeedstuffs.

Animalfeedqualityishighlyregulatedsince themajorityofanimals,ortheirproducts,will beconvertedintofoodforhumanconsumption.

ECRegulation767/2009stipulatesthe requirementsforthemarketinganduseofanimalfeeds,and(withreferencetorelatedregulations)requirescompletetraceabilityoffeeds,personnel,andadditives,anddefinesthecompulsorylabellingrequirements. Measuresmustbetakentoprevent contaminationwithhazardousmaterialsabovespecifiedlimits;suchasheavymetals, mycotoxins,pesticidesetc.andmicroorganismscapableofcausinghumandisease(zoonoticagents)suchasSalmonellaspecies.

Majorfoodsafetycrisescanoccurfromthecontaminationofanimalfeedcausingriskstoanimalandhumanhealthresultinginrecalls;financialdamageaslargequantitiesofproduct havetobedestroyed;andthepotentialforconsiderabledamagetothereputationofanybusinessesinvolved.Recallsincludemelamineinpetfoods,numerouseventsofanimalfeedcargorejectedduetoaflatoxincontamination,porkproductscontaminatedwithdioxins,andmanymore.Preventingtheseissuesthroughreliableanalysisatsourcebackedupbyindependentverificationthroughparticipationinaproficiencyscheme,canhelptosavelargesumsofmoneyforaverysmallinvestment.

QCS - Chocolate scheme

TheQualityinChocolateScheme(QCS) isintendedforusebymicrobiologistsand chemistsworkinginthechocolate manufacturingindustry.

CacaotreeswerefirstcultivatedbytheAztecs,whousedthebeansbothasaformofcurrency andtoproduceaspiceddrinkknownas‘chocolatl’.Centurieslater,thefirstchocolatecompanywasestablishedinNorthAmericain1765.Overtheyears,manydifferenttypesandflavoursofchocolatehavebeendevelopedandcacaoderivativesareoftenblendedwithotheringredientstoproduceadiverserangeofproducts.Chocolateisprobablythemostpopularend-product;insomecountriesupto90%ofthepopulationbuyschocolateonaregularbasis.

Chocolateproductsarealsooneofthefewfoodcommoditieswhosecompositionis controlledatEClevel.Forexample,ECDirective 2000/36/EC‘relatingtococoaandchocolateproductsintendedforhumanconsumption’,setscommonrulesanddefinitionswithregardtothecomposition,manufacture,packagingandlabellingofchocolateandcocoaproducts.

Themicrobiologicalproblemsassociatedwithchocolateandcocoaproductsareuniquetothechocolateindustry,andarerelatedtothelowwateractivityandthehighfatandsugarcontent.ThemostimportantmicrobiologicalriskliesinthepossiblepresenceofSalmonella,whichcansurviveinchocolateforlongperiodsoftimeandmaynotbedestroyedbyprocessing. Levelsofspoilageorganismsthroughoutthemanufacturingprocessarealsoofinterestfromacommercialviewpoint,topreventtasteandappearancedefects.

Chemicalanalysisisequallyimportanttoensuretheorganolepticpropertiesarewhatweexpect.Afterall,it’swhyweconsumesomuchchocolate.Testsformoisture,fat,ashandtotalsugarsareimportanttoensuretherighttextureandmouthfeel,whilsttheobromineandbutyricacidfromthecocoapowderarekeycontributors tothetaste.

TheQualityinFoodChemistryScheme(QFCS)isdesignedspecificallyforlaboratoriesthatperformnutritionalanalysis,pesticidestesting, wateractivityandadditives(preservatives,coloursandsweeteners)checks.

Allfoodproductsrequirebasicnutritional labellinginordertohelpconsumersmake informedchoicesaboutthefoodtheyeatandareespeciallyimportantwherespecificclaimsaremadeaboutafood’snutritionalcontent.

Mostcountriessetstrictlimitsfortheamountofpesticideresidueinfoodsinordertoprotectconsumers.Thefruit/vegetabletestmaterialwillallowparticipantstomonitortheirqualityandreliabilityofresultstohelpensurecompliancewithregulatoryrequirements.

Theregulationofwaterasaningredientinfoodsandfoodproductswastheearliestformoffoodpreservation.Thewateractivity(Aw)measurementoffoodisfundamentalforfoodsafetyandstabilitywithrespecttomicrobialgrowth,chemical/biochemicalreactionrates,andphysicalproperties.

“The frequency that a laboratory needs to participate in proficiency testing depends on a wide range of factors specific to each individual laboratory. Therefore every individual laboratory may have a different need, which is why our schemes provide flexible participation, although some do have a minimum participation level. Third parties, such as regulatory bodies, may recommend minimum levels of participation. To gain the benefit from trend analysis, participation in a minimum of four rounds over a scheme year is recommended.”

Aswellasdistilledbeverages,DAPScoversanalysisofawiderangeofalcoholicbeveragesandintermediateprocesssamples.Therangeofbeveragesincludesfermentedworts,scotchwhisky,clearanddarkspirits,liqueurs,ciders,winesandreadytodrinkalcoholicbeverages(alsoknownas‘lifestyle’drinks).

DAPSdoesnotincludeanytestmaterialsofbeer-thereisaseparateschemeforbeer,BAPS(seepage35).

Therearefivedifferentgroupsavailable,with acomprehensiverangeoftestparameters, assummarisedinthetable.

OneofthekeytestsperformedwithinDAPS isthemeasurementofalcoholicstrength.Dutyisnormallypaidonthebasisofthealcoholinthebeverage,andsoitisakeyperformanceindicatorfortheproductandtaxauthorities.Bymonitoringlaboratoryperformanceinthiskeyarea,laboratoriescanhelpensurethatoverpaymentisnotmadethussavingmoney.Underpayment,whichcouldleadtofinancialpenalties,canalsobeavoided.

TDMisthemeasurementofspecificdruglevels (concentrations)attimedintervalsinpatients,usuallythroughbloodsamples,andisnecessary wherecontrolofdrugconcentrationsisrequiredtoachieveoptimumtreatmentforthepatient.

Formostdrugs,monitoringisnotrequired astheyhaveawidetherapeuticindexi.e.thedifferencebetweenatherapeuticandtoxic concentrationislarge.Therefore,most individualswillbeeffectivelytreatedwithoutextremesideeffectsorsymptomsoftoxicity.

However,drugswithanarrowtherapeuticrangemayresultinahighorlowserum concentrationifnotmonitoredandcontrolled.Drugconcentrationsinthebloodstreamthat aretoohighhavethepotentialtoexertadverse effectsassociatedwithtoxicorevenfatalconsequences.Drugconcentrationsbelowthetherapeuticrangecanleadtopoorresponsetotreatment.Forsomedrugs,maintainingthissteadystateisnotassimpleasgivingastandard doseofmedication.

TheDrugsofAbuseinUrine(DAU)scheme isdesignedtoprovideanindependent performanceassessmentoflaboratories andclinicsthatprovideroutineservicesfordetectionofdrugsofabuseinurine.The DAUschemeisfullyaccreditedintheUK byClinicalPathologyAccreditation(CPA).

Humanurinehasbeenusedformanyyearstodetectthepresenceoffrequentlyabuseddrugs.Aurinedrugtestmaybeundertakenwhenorderedbyadoctortomonitoraknownor suspectedsubstanceabusepatient,and wheneverapersonhassymptomsthatsuggestdruguse.Urinedrugtestsmayberequestedforavarietyofreasons,includingoccupationalmonitoring,insurancescreening,legalandforensicpurposesandinsports.
