Field-to-Finish Infrastructure Design

A powerful and versatile solution for infrastructure design, ENKA offers 3D parametric modelling and an innovative approach to designing civil components in the context of the whole project. ENKA is widely used for roads and highways, railways, and public works projects as well as commercial, industrial, and environmental land development. Our software provides a greater level of design sophistication than standard tools through the ability to apply design rules. ENKA Engineers able to work in multiple views and dimensions. For roads and highways, and provides an all-in-one visual tool for 3D parametric design of the complete road corridor. This and other fully developed capabilities result in impressive improvements in the areas of design productivity and project accuracy.

Page 27: Profile

ENKA enables users to create intelligent models containing not only terrain data but also roadway or site features. Features are visually distinguished by structure, appearance, and symbology. The software uses triangulated surfaces to represent terrain – for both existing ground and proposed design. Intelligent digital terrain modelling (DTM) lets users incorporate features such as roadway centrelines, pavement edges, or ditches in the surface model. These can be random features for non-uniformly occurring points, or break lines that represent features connected in linear segments – as in the case of ridges, edges of pavement, and curbs.

Our Designer’s smart, in-context 3D design capabilities are the state-of-the-art in roadway design automation.

Interior voids or holes represent building footprints, lakes, and so on. Exterior-boundary features can be placed around surface areas to maintain cut-and-fill lines in proposed designs. In addition, other topography features are represented in the 3D model, including utilities (both above and below ground), buildings/pads, or any topological data collected.

Enka is the number one college in the UK for site engineers with over 4,000 successful graduates. Our courses provide all the practical and theoretical skills needed to work on a construction site. The College was founded in 1998 and quickly established itself as a respected training centre. From the outset, Enka has remained focussed on teaching the fundamentals of the setting out process, leading to a steady stream of qualified site engineers.

60% of UK site engineers are ENKA trained

Civil Engineering College

Page 42: Profile

Enka identified a skills gap within the construction industry and developed intensive training courses which give candidates a solid understanding of principles and practical skills that would normal take years of site experience to acquire. With half of all Chartered Civil Engineers reaching retirement age there has never been a better time to train.

Tunnel form Tunnel form is a formwork system that allows the contractor to cast walls and slabs in one operation in a daily cycle. It combines the speed, quality and accuracy of factory/off-site production with the flexibility and economy of in-situ construction and is recognised as a modern method of construction (MMC). The result is a cellular reinforced structure, the surfaces of which are sufficiently high quality to require only minimal finishing for direct decoration, while the end walls and facades are easily completed with thermally insulated units that can be clad as required. The system creates an efficient load-bearing structure for use in a wide variety of applications. It is particularly effective in projects suited to repetitive cellular construction such as residential blocks, hotels, student accommodation, barracks and prisons. Benefits

Cost Tunnel form systems are able to provide cost-effective, high quality construction, generating significant savings in time and costs over alternative methods without compromising on design. The system is now one of the most preferred methods of cellular construction with architects, engineers and contractors throughout the world, whilst client appreciate tunnel form’s ability to deliver projects to budget and on time. Building The formwork is specially adapted for each project. The repetitive nature of the system and the use of prefabricated forms and reinforcing mats/cages simplifies the whole construction process, producing a smooth and fast operation. The techniques used are already familiar to the industry, but with tunnel form construction there is less reliance on skilled labour. Quality Quality is enhanced despite the speed of construction. The precise, even steel face of the formwork creates a smooth, high quality finish capable of receiving direct decoration with the minimum of preparation (a skim coat may be required). This reduces the requirement for following trades, thus providing additional cost savings and speeding the entire process.

Page 95: Profile

Design The large bays constructed using tunnel form provide exceptional flexibility in the design and layout of the building and allow a high degree of freedom in the final appearance. Safety Tunnel form has integral working platforms and edge protection systems. In addition, the repetitive, predictable nature of the tasks involved encourages familiarity with operations, and, once training is complete, productivity improves as construction progresses. The minimal requirement for tools and equipment when moving the tunnel form further reduces the risk of accidents on site. Sustainability The insitu casting of units on site and the local availability of ready-mixed concrete supplies reduce transportation impacts. Just-in-time deliveries and near zero wastage produce an overall tidier site with associated cost savings and safety benefits. Concrete’s thermal mass coupled with correct insulation and boiler design minimises heating costs and can even reduce air-conditioning requirements.
