Brief Note about Department

The department of English was born with the birth of the College in

July1957 with UG courses having Dr. Nirmal Chandra Pathak as the first head

of the Department and Prof. Partha Sarathi, Prof. Kanak Tiwari were the

founder members. Prof S.K. Jain, Dr. Chandani, Dr. Santosh Singh, Dr. Neelu

Shrivastav have rendered their services for a long time as the heads of the

department and presently Dr. Anita Shankar is bearing the responsibility of the

head.

The PG courses were started in the department in the year 1983. Right

now, other than the Foundation Course, BA English Literature, Add-on course

in “Creative Writing and Spoken English” & PG in English Literature are

successfully being run. Free Spoken English classes are also arranged every

year regularly by the department for the students.

Against total sanctioned posts of One Professor and 5 Assistant

Professors, 4 regular Assistant Professors are posted in the department at

present.

Meeting of Board of Studies

The academic year 2017-18 started with the meeting of Board of Studies

on 15.07.17 at 12 noon. The eminent members of the academic field were

invited to improvise and redesign the syllabus of MA English /BA /B.Sc.

/B.Com FC, BA English Literature & Add-on course in “Spoken English &

Creative Writing”. The board members unanimously decided to follow the

University syllabus for UG and few changes were made in the MA syllabus.

The following members were present in the meeting:-

The following objectives were kept in mind while formulating the syllabus-

1. At Graduation level, the students of literature should have knowledge

about the important literary movements, genres, various ages, evolution

and development of literary forms too.

2. At PG level, the students should be acquainted with the political,

economical, social and intellectual background of various ages to know

the works of authors. The students should have knowledge about various

critical theories formulated by eminent critics through the ages from

Aristotle to Modern Age.

3. The students should have knowledge about various critical theories

formulated by eminent critics through the ages from Aristotle to Modern

Age.

4. To make the students aware about the history of English literature, one

newspaper "History of English Literature” has been added.

Inauguration of Free Spoken English Class

The Department of English has been conducting free Spoken English

class for the students since last eight years. Around three to four hundred

students every year get benefitted with this class. The formal inauguration of the

free Spoken English class was performed on 1st September 2017 in the presence

of Principal Dr. R. N. Singh, Head Dr. Anita Shankar and all the faculties of

department Dr. Neelu Shrivastava, Ms. Manjari Singh, Dr. Anita Saha and Mrs.

Bhawna Sejpal. Dr. R.N. Singh motivated the students through his dynamic

speech on the importance and necessity of English in present world. He urged

the students to attend the class regularly for better result.

Dr. Anita Shankar and Dr. Neelu Shrivastava also shared their views with

the students and motivated them with their valuable suggestions.

Teachers’ Day Celebration and welcome Party

The students of MA 1st and 3

rd semester celebrated Teachers’ Day on

September 5, 2017. The students honoured the teachers with marking kumkum

tilak on their forehead, presenting them flower bunches and taking their

blessings in a traditional way. Cake was also cut and the students also

performed duet and group dance, sang songs in the honour the teachers.

A welcome party by the students of MA 3rd

semester was also organized

for the students of MA 1st semester on the same day in an urge to understand

each other better for better learning process.

Cleanliness Drive 15-09-17 to 02-10-17

Cleanliness drive was conducted by the department of English from

September 15, 2017 to October 02, 2017 under “Cleanliness Campaign”. It was

participated among all the faculty members and the students of the Department.

The teachers and students cleaned the Language Lab Classroom, the Language

Lab, classrooms and the department HOD Dr. Anita Shankar, Dr. Neelu

Shrivastava, Dr. Anita Saha, Prof. Manjari Singh, Dr. Rupal Farishta and Dr.

Rukhsana Khan co-operated wholeheartedly to make the campaign successful.

Formation of English Literary Association and

Guest Lecture

English Literary Association has been a prestigious Association in our

college since the inception of P.G classes. It has been working rigorously during

the past few years focusing on the improvement of reading, writing, speaking

and listening skills of the students in our college.

The English Literary Association in our college constitutes an executive

committee including a teacher in charge, a President, a Vice President, a

Secretary, a Joint Secretary and a Treasurer. With the new session an executive

committee was announced by the Principal, Dr. R.N. Singh on 4th

October 2017.

The programme started with lighting of the lamp before the Goddess of

Knowledge, Maa Saraswati by the guest speaker, respected Principal Dr. R.N.

Singh and all the members of the department. Then, Dr. Anita Shankar, the

Head of the Department presented her welcome note. She also threw light on

the objectives of the Literary Association. Principal, Dr. R.N. Singh in his

speech said that our vision is to make each student speak and communicate

through English. We know that it is a Herculean task still we aspire and labour

for it. A Chinese proverb says “if you are planning for a year sow corns, if you

are planning for a decade plant trees and if you are planning for a life time,

educate people.” Language is the medium through which educational process

fulfills its aims. So it is highly essential that students should be able to handle

language in its best level. The English Literary Association has been conducting

varied activities and competitions to improve the language skills of the students.

He urged the students to focus on NET also while pursuing M.A.

Thereafter all the office bearers took oath to fulfill their duties with

allegiance and honesty. A guest Lecture was also organized on the same day.

The invited guest speaker was Dr. G.A. Ghanshyam, the Professor in English,

Govt. Lahiri College, Chirmiri and National President of ELTAI.

Dr. Ghanshyam delivered a profound lecture on “Jawahar Lal Nehru and

his Philosophy” and enlightened the students with it. At first Dr. Ghanshyam

highly motivated the students to make English their language of conversation

through Literary Activities. He inspired them to talk to their friends in English

only and arrange group discussions to remove the hesitation in them. Later he

focused on Jawahar Lal Nehru’s “The Discovery of India” and the aspects

which Nehru has touched in his autobiography.

The programme was conducted by Miss. Neha Sinha and Miss Afshan

Mahak proposed the vote of thanks. All the faculty members; Dr. Neelu

Shrivastava, Dr. Anita Saha, Prof. Manjari Singh, Dr. Rupal Farishta and Dr.

Rukhsana Khan were present on the occasion.

Chew and View

The students of MA 1st and 3

rd semester were shown movies viz. “Pride

and Prejudice”, “The Hairy Ape”, “Life of Pie”, “Waiting for Godot”, “M K

Gandhi” respectively on November 14, January 13, January 17, January 18, and

February 01, 2017. The students learnt through fun and got acquainted with the

storyline, style of writing, characters, themes etc. through watching the movies.

They admired the efforts of the department for providing them better learning

environment.

Internship

English Department is since last few years following the custom of

providing at least two chances to every student to explore their hidden talents,

improving their confidence and make their understanding better. For this all the

PG students of the department are allocated two-two periods in UG classes

along with the topic to be taught. All the students of the department

enthusiastically participate in the activity. Likewise every year, this year also

the students of MA 1st and 3

rd semester took classes of various UG courses in

the college on November 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11, 2017, The PG students chose various

topics and tried to explain them with proficiency and also cleared the doubts of

the UG students. The UG students also got motivated with the internship

activity as they felt themselves just a step back to the seniors.

Valedictory Function of Free Spoken English Class

The Valedictory function of the Free English Spoken Class was held on

6th January, 2017. With 60 students of the Course attending the function, Dr. R.

N.Singh, Prinipal, Dr. Anita Singh, H.O.D, Dr. Neelu Shrivastava,Miss Roopali

Burande participated in the function.

Presided over by Dr. R.Singh, the function began at 11 a.m. in the Smart Class

of the B Block, with prayer by the students of M.A. English. While welcoming

the participants, Dr. Anita Singh, mentioned the contribution that DMV is

making to Spoken English a pioneer in the field of communication and said the

Principal Dr. R.N.Singh has proved himself to be educational administrators of

eminence.

The Principal, Dr. R.N.Singh, in his presidential remarks, referred to the

importance of good communication skills which are indispensable for the

success of any professional. If one wants to reach out to people, he or she has to

speak their language. The English language, in particular, has become essential

in the lives of young people who aspire to advance their careers anywhere in the

world. English language learning has therefore become a must for any Indian

student today.

In his valedictory, Prof. Singh spoke on the scope of the course as a

professional one and appreciated DMV for being the only College here in

offering the course. He also mentioned the keen interest that DMV has in the

spread of awareness in new knowledge fields in the domain.

The Principal, Dr. R. N. Singh gave the students his best wishes and

distributed the certificates. The valedictory session concluded with a vote of

thanks by Dr. Neelu Shrivastav, Asst. Prof. of English.

Parents-Teachers Meeting

Parents-Teachers Meeting was organised by the department of

English on 13th

January 2018. The parents seemed satisfied with the department

and the college from all aspects. The parents also shared their views on how

department can further improve the quality of teaching. The Principal Dr. R. N.

Singh informed the parents about the NET classes being organised in the

department and asked them to insist their wards to attend the class. HOD Dr.

Anita Shankar, Dr. Neelu Shrivastava, Dr. Anita Saha, Prof. Manjari Singh, Dr.

Rupal Farishta and Mr. Shobharam Patel enquired about the status of teaching

in the department.

Extension Activity

On 27.01.18, the students of Department of English under the

guidance of Head Dr. Anita Shankar and professors of the department Dr. Neelu

Shrivastava, Dr. Anita Saha, Prof. Manjari Singh, Dr. Rupal Farishta and Mr.

Shobharam Patel visited Ward No 31, Sanjay Nagar Ward and Ward No. 32,

Baiga Para Ward and did survey of the Cleanliness awareness among the

denizens. During the activity, the team also visited the local Govt. Primary

School and did enquiries about the status of English teaching in the school and

the need of the subject teachers.

Guest Lecture on “Waiting for Godot”

A Guest Lecture was organised by the Department of English on 26th

March, 2018. The invited guest speaker was Dr. Savita Singh, the Professor in

English, Govt. Nagarjuna Science College, Raipur.

The programme started with lighting of the lamp before the Goddess of

Knowledge, Maa Saraswati by the guest speaker, and all the members of the

department. Then, Dr. Anita Shankar, the Head of the Department presented her

welcome note.

Dr. Savita Singh delivered a profound lecture on “Waiting for Godot” and

gave a wonderful explanation of the “Absurd Drama”. She explained what does

absurd drama delineate? How the main characters Estragon and Vladimir pass

their time by playing games on the open road while waiting for an imaginary

character Godot. It reflects Beckett’s purpose of communicating to his audience

that life is absurd, without any purpose.

Guest Lecture on “I C Analysis”

A Guest Lecture was organised by the Department of English on 27th

March, 2018. The invited guest speaker was Dr. Kannam Bala Swami, retired

Professor in English, Kalyan College, Bhilai. The programme started with the

lighting of candle in front of the goddess Saraswati by Dr. Swami followed by a

welcome note by Dr. Anita Shankar, Head, Department of English.

Dr. Swami delivered a profound lecture on “I C Analysis”. She started her

lecture by asking questions on linguistics, words, morphemes, morphology,

simple and complex words, kinds of sentences etc. She then gave them all the

definitions with examples. She explained the figures of speech in detail. Then

she taught them the phrase structure. Finally she taught them two ways to

perform IC Analysis: one traditional and another modern. She also availed the

students with hand notes that would be useful in their examination.

The programme was conducted by Miss. Neha Sinha and Miss Afshan

Mahak proposed the vote of thanks. All the faculty members; Dr. Neelu

Shrivastava, Dr. Anita Saha, Prof. Manjari Singh, Dr. Rupal Farishta and Mr.

Shobharam Patel were present on the occasion.

Language Lab Training Programme

Two day Wordsworth English Language Lab Software training

Programme by ACTUNIV, Ahmedabad, was organised by the Department of

English on 3rd

& 4th

April, 2018. Mr. Moninder Singh, the Trainer from

ACTUNIV conducted the training programme in a very interesting and

participative manner. All the faculty members & 10 students from MA II

semester were a part of it to learn communicative skills through the latest

technology.

The first day of the training programme started with the welcome note

given by Dr. Anita Shankar, Head, Department of English. Mr. Moninder Singh,

started the session with Ice-breaking activity in which he asked all the

participants to give introduction of their partners. Thereafter he explained the

correct way of introducing someone. He demonstrated how to prepare separate

IDs for all the participants. Mr. Singh taught us how to launch the software in

the master computer, so that it may be accessible to all the users in the lab. He

then explained the three levels for learners: Basic, Intermediate and Advanced

with an extra one Life Skills, their usages, and how the teacher can prepare and

impart the different modules, give assignments to the students through the

software and generate their performance report. He also illustrated how the

students can be benefitted by using this software. Mr. Singh took up the

theoretical part of the software on the first day.

The second day training was focused on the practical aspect of

software. The faculty as well as the students practically made use of the

software. It was really a blend of fun and learning for all participants while

operating the software. It taught the correct pronunciation, stress & intonation at

right place in words & polished language while speaking and writing. Overall it

was a wonderful experience for all.

The second day session concluded with the vote of thanks to Mr.

Singh by Dr. Neelu Shrivastava. All the faculty members including Dr. Anita

Saha and Ms. Manjari Singh took active part in the programme.
