Lubricating materials inindustry often have an undesirable

side effect: They can easily turn

    the safest of environment into

    dangerous ones.

    This problem is well under-

    stood by civil and structural

    engineers, and by the automotive

industries. It is a particular problem

    for timber scaffolding boards.

    In the same way certain

    safety-relevant equipment such as

    high-water walkways or escape

    stairways can under adverse cir-

    cumstances themselves turn into a

    source of danger.

    We have several solutions

    that help to counteract these

    issues.

As an experienced manu-facturer of access and egress

    systems, such as walkways gra-

tings and escape stairs and hand-

rails, we always keep ourselves up

to date with the current regulations

    and standards governing the con-

    struction of our products. Copies

of our test reports are available on

    request.

    BG-(BIA-) Tested and certified

    The Berufsgenossenschaftliche

    Institut fr Arbeitssicherheit (BIA)

    (The Professional Trade Asso-

ciation Institute for Safety at Work)

    tests the slip-resistancy and the

    deflection of the planks.

    Test report by MFPA (Material

    Testing Authority for Fire-Proof

    Planks):

This serves as the basis for the

    general building supervision aut-

    hority approvals for non-combu-

    stible and inflammable building

    materials.

    Test report by RAL (German

    Institute for Quality Assessment and

    Certification Quality Assessment):

    The quality and testing regulations

    are valid for structural calculations

and the manufacture of metal pro-

file planks according to QualityAssessment RAL-GZ 639.

    Slip-resistant surfacewith both upward and

    raised perforations

    The upwards-perforated

    surface with its non-slip design

    provides a surface which gives

    superior gripping properties which

    offers the highest safety.

The oval-shaped openingspermit liquids to run off easily.

    Slip-resistant surfacewith both upward and

    downward facing holes

    The downward-perforated

holes have a diameter of 18 mm,

    whilst the upward-perforated holes

    have a diameter of 4.5mm.

    The interplay between the

prominent and recessed openingsprovides a secure foothold and at

the same time allows liquids to

    drain freely off the surface.

    The advantage of this

    apparently less aggressive design

    is demonstrated in situations in

which wheeled trolleys have to be

    pushed across the surface.

    The downward-perforated

holes have a diameter of 8 mm,

    whilst the upward-perforated holes

    Using only the 4.5mm upward

    Ladder

    rung profiles21

Most ladder rungs have asimilar hole pattern. The upward-

    pressed perforations provide a

    slip-resistant tread, even in areas

where there is an increased risk of

    oil and contamination.

    The highest level of tread

safety is achieved with the double-

    rowed and offset perforations

which are carried right through to

    the edges of the planks.

    22 Load tables

The values shown are calculated according

to their maximum permitted carrying capaci-

ty. The uniformly-distributed load is a load

which allows a maximum deflection of l/200

(l is the height of the plank). Adjacent plankheight at joints must not exceed 4mm in eit-

    her direction.

It is assumed that the loading surface is

effective across the whole width of the plank

    B. If this is not the case then the point load

    values must not be exceeded

    (see Tables).

Point loads are the loads which most fre-

quently arise. The load is thereby effective in

    the centre of the plank.

a1 is the length of the tread in the

    longitudinal plank direction.

a2 is the width of the tread in the

    longitudinal plank direction.

bm is the jointly-carrying width in thelongitudinal plank direction.
