1. General details

Benzaldehyde is colourless liquid with bitter almond odour. It is readily soluble in alcohol and ether and

slightly soluble in water

2. Product application

2.1. Agrochemical industry

Used in the manufacture of meta Phenoxy benzaldehyde, which is an intermediate for the pesticides

namely Cypermethric acid / Cypermethrin, Permethrin, Fenvalerate, Metamitron etc.

Used as raw material in the manufacture of Difenzoquat (popularly known as Avenge), an important

herbicide utilised for the control of wild oats in barley and wheat.

2.2. Pharmaceutical / intermediate chemical

Used in the manufacture of various drugs and drug intermediate such as Ephedrin hydrochloride,

Chlorempenicol, Alpha Phenyl glycine and dihydro phenyl glycine.

Ephedrine Hydrochloride is produced from benzaldehyde.

Other intermediates including benzylamine can also be produced from benzaldehyde.

2.3. Perfumery / food sector

Used in the manufacture of certain odourants and flavouring chemicals such as cinnamic alcohol,

cinnamaldehyde , �-hexyl cinnamaldehyde and �-amyl cinnamaldehyde

Used directly as a flavouring agent, particularly for artificial cherry and almond flavours.

2.4. Dyestuff sector

Used in the manufacture of basic dyes like malachite green, basic brilliant green , cationic navy blue etc

Used as dyeing assistant for polyamide fibres.

Used in the manufacture of Congo Red and Scarlet.
