UPCOMING EVENTS FOR THE TRAIL RIDERS

    SOUTH FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

  • TRAIL MANNERS

Good manners is the grease that helps people get along with each other, avoiding friction. • 16 & UNDER MUST WEAR A HELMET. • Be aware of the effect your actions have on

others, their horses and their property. • Do not upset your co-riders’ horses. • Ride at a quiet, controlled pace. • NEVER PASS OTHERS AT A GALLOP. • Keep a safe distance… don’t crowd others. • STAY WITH A DISMOUNTED RIDER • Respect the property of others. (ie: lawns, farm

fields, crops, groves, livestock, etc.) • Leave gates as you found them: Open gates

should remain open. Closed gates should remain closed.

    • DO NOT PASS THE TRAIL BOSS or drop behind the drag rider.

    • Stay with the trail boss on the same side of the road. Do not split the road.

    • Clean up after your horse. Pick up manure or spread it depending on where you are. Do not clean your trailers out when you unload.

    • NO PROFANITY AT ANY SFTR EVENTS. REMEMBER! If you mind your manners others won’t mind when you and your horse return to ride.

    HORSE CHARITIES

The SFTR donates to these charities once a year. These charities are badly in need of donations. Please try to send what you can to help them. Thanks from the SFTR.

    TROPICAL PARK HURRICANE STALLS

First! Reserve your stalls with Debi Cat-Priest at 305-775-1820. When a Hurricane Watch goes into effect, the barn manager, Pablo Tejeda, will attempt to reach everyone to confirm that you will take possession of your stall. If unsuccessful, he will reassign your stall for that hurricane to someone else. Do not call Pablo unless a Watch is in effect. Email Pablo at [email protected] and text Debi at 305-775-1820 only if a WATCH is in effect. Your reservation fee per stall is $28.00. This reserves a stall for the 2019 Hurricane Sea-son. Once a Hurricane Watch goes into effect and you take possession of your stall, on the 25th hour you will owe Miami-Dade County an additional daily fee, plus an additional $28.00 to re-reserve your stall for the remainder of the 2019 Season. Upon arrival, Pablo will need to see your Coggins papers. Suggested items are flashlight, buckets with clips for water, (muck buckets work), a fly mask, your name, horse’s name and phone #’s taped to your stall doors, halter, written on your horse, a bale of hay to put in the stall so the horse has something to keep him busy all the hours he is there etc. You can’t leave anything but your horse at Tropical Park. Depending on the storm’s estimated arrival, Miami-Dade County will lock the park gates. Once the Hurricane Watch is lifted, you have 48 hours to remove your horse. All stalls must be STRIPPED before leaving or an additional charge per stall will be applied and you will be unable to reserve stalls in the future. Due to Debi's own hurricane preparations she will not be as responsive if you wait until the last 3 days be-fore a storm to reserve stalls. You may not get a stall if you wait until then. Please reserve now if you want a stall!

Hope to see you on the trail – not at Tropical Park!

  • PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hi Trail Riders,

Well, summer's here and the time is hot or raining, but SFTR are not

deterred. We had three rides in June and we have a parade and three

scheduled in July. We had shorter rides and Sunday rides, and all had pretty good turnouts.

I have had some interest in a night ride, so I'm checking the full moon

nights coming up to try one soon. Also would like some arena activity like a fun day or clinic for an evening event, (dress up your horse ride

for those that like that sort of thing), say 5:pm to 7:30 if it's not pour-

ing. Also an indoor, air conditioned social event like bowling and/or a junior's event with ground activities like roping, archery, horseshoe toss,

etc. Any dry evening just before sunset should not be as hot. August is kind of empty right now so let's make some plans to get to-

gether in the cooler hours or cooler venues.

September has the Freedom Walk in Homestead, The Obstacle and Parade Practice Challenge at Sonny and Bonny's and a Yard Sale at

Robbie’s pasture. We have a weekend in between that's empty for now.

Hey, you can come up with ideas too. Our Board has it ears open to all suggestions. Let's make the fun continue.

Stay cool, even if it's hot!!!

    SUNSHINE REPORT

Hello SFTR family. We have celebratory news and sad news, yet it is our news to share: Our condolences go out to Jennifer Zambo for the loss of her childhood friend, Ray. Sadly Renee Reyn-olds also mourns the loss of her nephew, Terry, who passed away from cancer. They will be missed by all who knew them. Sympathy and love go to Danny Me-dina for the loss of his German Shepard; and to Barbara Ruiz-Gonzalez for the loss of her sweet friend & com-panion, Frankie. Happy for Becky Card Swerdloff, who is getting bet-ter from her surgery as she recuperates at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, & hopes to be home soon. We’re glad to hear Amanda Andujar’s son, Mason, was uninjured after being hit by a car in Doral. Also, so pleased to hear John Carroll is back home, mending from his 2nd back surgery. Meanwhile, daughter Katri-na Carroll has been hospitalized as the docs detect a heart & an aorta murmur. Wishing her the best care possible and a swift resolution! And when a stray dog picks a fight with your pup, we all have the determina-tion to step in and save our dog from injury. Well, Pa-tricia Perez, our club Secretary did so, and has finished her rabies shots! With her hand mending, we hope she is able to join us riding again soon. We also hope Elsy Altuve's husband, Alex Torres, is feeling better follow-ing a by-pass procedure – a little R&R under the palms seems well deserved.

We congratulate our Happy Anniversary SFTR cou-ples: Beverly & Ray Shank for their 8th, Olga & Mitch Horn on their 18th, Laura & John Micali for their 19th, Renee & Brian Reynolds on their 20th, Sandy & Jeff Fobb for their 21st , and Carrie & Wayne Hershberger for their 44th! Kudos to you all for those wonderful years together! And the cat is out of the bag...Megan Barnes will be Mrs. Chris Rego this spring, as they plan to tie the knot! We are all so happy for you both. Not to be left out, JC & Lynn Vina’s new granddaugh-ter, Siena, was baptised – and all feels right in their world. And lastly, a feel-good story for us all...Kelly Murphy & Trey's cat, Tiger, went missing at their new home in Texas- despite being happily settled-in. About 1.5 months later Kelly wanders into a Petsmart for dog food & to look at another cat. What does she see? Their orange tabby, Tiger!!! Home again – safe, loved, chipped and probably won't go wandering any more. Don’t forget to keep me posted on your events: love, anniversaries, births, illnesses, anything you want to share here to get loving support from our SFTR family – my email: [email protected], or text 786-286-0643. From your Sunshine reporter, hoping your 4th of July is a safe one. Happy trails & great rides!

AROUND THE PADDOCK… The Heat, then the Rain...Repeat...

June falls into July, SFTR are on vacations , upgrad-ing their skills at clinics with trainers, or packing up their horse for a cross-country ride expedition. Our rainy season is in full swing, & we dial down our hec-tic ride season & revel in the accomplishments of our friends & family. To wit, we really must congratulate our good friends in local ranch sorting, since Iosvany Castillo & his expert team won the 3man-2gate event at the National Ranch Sorting Championships in Tex-as! Time was the westerners laughed when they heard Fla. was attending. Now, thanks to the hard work of these team & individual (and even junior) athletes have brought the top awards consistently back to so. Fla. So if you want to learn a great sport, they're off 136 St west of Krome – show up, ask, learn, enjoy! On the FFA scene, Jillian Penabella is pushing huge herds of cattle in no. Fla., while SFTR/FFA Angelina Rivera & Nicole Donate attended the Univ. of Fla. Agricultural Education Institute. Angelina is headed to ABAC in Ga. for college, & we wish her well as she begins her agri-science & teaching studies! The top FFA award this year, the American FFA Award, went to our college man, Christian Dean; while Gaby Dean & Angelina Rivera garnered their FFA State De-grees. Good feeling to know these great young peo-

ple, & realize they were helped along by SFTR in-volvement! We also happily congratulate Katrina Carroll for graduating with her Bachelors of Science in Nursing – sure hope she locates down here to take care of some of us. Do you recall this past season a junior started with the SFTR in parades & trail rides, and by season-end was riding with the Homestead Everglades Posse? Our own Jaylyn Dorado! Here's her next adventure – she is running for Miss Rodeo Fla. Princess...and we wish her all the best. Our SFTR Parade Team would like to encourage parents to bring their kids to walk, ride in the truck, lead-line or ride solo in our parades (see the Parade News article for info). Plain long sleeved white shirt & black pants (Goodwill?), and a helmet (if mount-ed). We will supply a bandana and you supply the kid! It is a way for ALL SFTR kids & grandkids to be started by their parents & grandparents in develop-ing a passion for horse activities. Juniors are also very welcome at our SFTR Obstacle Challenge (in Sept), so they can practice leading or riding a horse with our members. Check our year-long calendar for events and let the young ones come along for the fun, for the learning, for the love of horses!

  • KICKING OFF THE SUMMER AT TREE TOPS

What a nice turnout and an awesome venue we shared at our Birthday Ride – celebrating all the June birthdays was a lot of fun. We enjoyed the company of our friends, and we made some new ones. Dany and Andrea lead the ride and Wayne was the ever-patient drag rider. We disappeared into the oak shaded trail, which opened eventually into a beautiful grass rolling-hill area. We avoided a drone heard buzzing in the vicinity, and regrouped to hear about the protected owl nests in the clear-ing. Each roped-off burrow had a pvc pipe in the entrance (to prevent sand collapse) and a diminu-tive perch next to the hole. Atop was a burrowing owl, doing the 360 degree head spin as it watched us quietly pass by. There were probably twenty or more such burrows, and then we were back into the forest. We also made a specific detour to see the apiary (bee hive area) along one of the trails. In a small clearing was a vertical wood fenced structure with clear plexiglass windows along

each side. The horses & riders could safely watch the bee hives buzzing with life, and have no interac-tion with their flight path! The group then split into a few smaller units for the return to camp, which would have been shorter for one group had they not taken a wrong turn. We only had two people order from Papa Johns, but the pizza arrived nice and hot and on time. Most every one brought their own lunch to enjoy. We all gathered at a group of tables and ate together in the heavy shade of old oaks. While we ate water-melon and polished off our lunches, we participated in a Trivia challenge. There were prizes for the trivia-savvy, and lots of laughs for good attempts. After all the prizes were given out, we cut the cake and sang happy birthday. Later, several people rode out again on their own. A good time was had by all...at least that was what everyone told us, Trivia game and all!

  • RIDING INTO THE SUNSET

June 23rd marked one year and one day since we signed final documents on Rockin’ M Ranch. It was the perfect time to invite you all to share our beauti-ful sunset. We had a great turnout, twelve riders and seven that joined us for dinner plus our family of four. Most RSVP’d so Sam added more chairs and we added more food. People started arriving at 3:45 pm and the last riders drove in at 5:15, but by 5:30 we were mounted and lined up for our customary group picture. I had planned a 6 mile (about 2 hours) ride. The day was hot, but as the sun went lower in the sky it seemed a little cooler. We had a bit of a rodeo and Belinda's horse bucked her off. She was in pain but when we saw she was able to stand and walk, we rode out. After riding about 40 minutes we heard some thun-der in the distance and saw lightning to the west of us. It was kind of far and I saw clear blue sky to the east and since it was my intention to go a mile east, I

took a vote and most followed me. When we turned south the clouds ahead seemed light and lightning free. Barbara showed me her phone on weather.com and the ominous dark clouds were moving south-west. We turned west, into the sunset, but the sun was not to be seen for the dark clouds to our west. We arrived back at the ranch right about 7:30, bone dry and satisfied that at no moment felt in danger of lightning. Food was waiting. Deda and Christina made a great meal and everyone brought delicious extras, including lemon and rum cakes, cupcakes, pineapple casse-role, veggies, key lime pie, maduros (cooked sweet plantain) and I don't remember what else,. We had tons of food. As we ate, the clouds took a walk and we were able to see that beautiful sunset over our back paddock. The rays of sun filtering through the mango trees, a magical end to a good time with many friends.

  • SOMEWHERE, OVER THE RAINBOW...

It was a stormy start for the Tiki Ride & Luau at Larry and Penny Thompson Park. There were concerns that the ride would be canceled on site, but we were a posi-tive bunch, and as our nine riders tacked up we were joined by Belinda Hebert with her two little granddaugh-ters - Kayla & Madison. There was one ugly cloud that lurked overhead, which prompted us to take a fast photo of our group. The storm clouds just needed to blow away...and they did! The girls helped Belinda lead-line their new horse through the grove as we headed out for a lovely ride along the trails, around the lake, through the pines and past the thick palmettos. We even tried a few old rarely used trails, and managed to find our way back to the perimeter trail leading back to the trailers, and found six more SFTR good friends had arrived to join us

for lunch- even Lydia (mom) & my son Jason! Our luau luncheon included Honeybaked ham & turkey on soft Ha-waiian bread rolls, potato salad, coleslaw, fruit chunks, lettuce & tomato, and an amazing hazelnut cake. We lounged under the shade of the mango trees while listening to the likes of Jimmy Buffet and Iz. We had our own spe-cial crooner, Mike Maldonado, sing along to the Iz rendi-tion of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, which kept us all in the tropical mood. Ben stopped by just in time to share some cake, which was now a lava-cake, due to the heat. Overall, it was a great ride for horses that are starting out, horses who need mellowing, and those who just enjoy a short jaunt through the park. Thank you to all those who attended, provided food, helped cleanup, and kept us enter-tained with your stories.

Wow, what a diamond in the rough! Our Mustang mare has made an amazing transformation in every possible way. Besides her obvious beauty, Nevada is sweet and friendly, and well-behaved on the ground. She can be pushy and will need someone experienced in natural horsemanship techniques to keep in check. She has not been tried under saddle. RESCUE STORY: We rescued Nevada, found stray in SW Miami-Dade, on 3/29/18. She was not claimed by an owner. Her freeze brand indicates she’s a BLM Mustang born in Nevada in 2010.

    PARADE TEAM NEWS

Parade season is here!!! Our first event of the season will be the Key Biscayne 4th of July Parade, and I hope to see you there. In addition to horses, we always need side walkers to make sure the people stay a safe dis-tance from the horses. Lead-line junior riders, in-hand horses, ponies & don-keys are always a crowd pleaser – so let's show off our patriotism with a big turnout for this great event! The parade starts promptly at 11:00 which means we should arrive at our usual parking area by 9:00 am. The directions are: Rickenbacker Causeway east & over all the bridges to Key Biscayne. Save your toll receipt. After you pass Crandon Park Beach on your left, you will pass a fire station on your right. Immedi-ately after the station there is a narrow road which goes off to the right...take it, and it leads to the tennis courts & trailer parking at Calusa Courts. If you miss the lit-tle side road, you'll next see a hard-right entrance to the courts. If you get to the Mobile station & stores, you went too far. Arrive early for better parking! Please remember if you need anything to complete your uniform or horse tack, please let Bonny or myself know in enough time to have it for you. This is a for-mal parade & will be televised, so riders must be in regulation uniform: our new long sleeved white west-ern style parade shirt, black pants, dark/black boots, parade straw hat with black glitter band or a helmet (black cover please.) No gloves in this parade, due to the heat. On site you will be loaned the colorful R-W-B stars bandana for the parade...all you have to remem-ber is to BRING your SLIDE!!! Horses/equines being ridden must be in complete of-ficial Parade Team tack: our black bridle & reins, breast color & pad. For comfort, you may use your own pad underneath, as long as it does not show. Mounted horses will receive a breast collar bow – no other decoration please. All lead-line horses/ponies may use a black halter & lead, or R-W-B halter & lead in the spirit of the 4th – your choice! In-hand equines may also have patriotic glitter, bows, ribbons, etc (please check with me). Please bring your kids or grand-kids to join us! The more the merrier! Please let us know if you are bring-ing juniors to ride or walk, so we can make them feel welcome & make sure they have a good time. After the parade we will have food, drinks, and of course, watermelon for everyone. Let's make this the best July 4th yet for the SFTR!
