This is the start of another very busy year for the HCTC with 4 shows planned for 2017. The fun starts here with our take on Jack Northcott’s ‘Aladdin’.
We are pleased to welcome back our very successful production team from last years ‘Peter Pan’ with the addition of our brilliant young choreographer Sarah Pottinger.
You will see as soon as the curtain goes up how much hard work and dedication has once again gone into bringing the story from the page to the stage!
Our success over recent years has been as much down to what happens behind the scenes as it is to the young (and not so young) appearing on stage, and I would like to thank them all, as without them a show of this size is not possible.
Of course the show would not happen at all if all of you did not support us by coming to watch and as long as you keep coming we will keep ‘doing it’. So it’s a big thank you from all of us for your continued support. Now it’s time to immerse yourselves in the wonderful story of Aladdin.
Shaun Bonetta
Message from the Chairperson
So, here we are. after saying I was never going to direct again, I’m incredibly glad I’ve been able to direct ‘Aladdin’. I had a big vision for this show and I am so pleased with how the beautiful set and costumes bring it all to life.
It’s not been an easy road there’s been many tears and laughter along the way. But I can honestly say I am so proud of each and every one of the company involved in this show. Without them none of this would have been possible. But I couldn’t have done it without my amazing Producer Tracey who has brought me back down to earth and keptme sane and organised throughout!
As always, we’ve been really lucky this year to have some very talented principles in the group both new, and not so new. We’ve also had a very hardworking chorus who, we think, may be our biggest ever. At some points there are over 40 people on stage! The script has been very generous to us and really brings ‘Aladdin’ to life for 2017, and our Musical Director, Ian, has really brought the stage alive with his arrangements sung beautifully by the cast; we’re very lucky to have him.
Now, it’s time for the curtain to rise, so sit back and enjoy the show.
Bethany Hibbert
Director’s Notes
The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA), founded in 1899, is the leading representative body for amateur theatre in the UK. The Association has a membership of approximately 2400 amateur theatre groups and over 2000 individual members staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of venues ranging from the country’s leading professional theatres to village halls. Covering a broad spectrum of age ranges NODA member societies meet the needs of all levels of both performers, whether dramatic, dance or musical, and those involved backstage, front of house or in society administration.
NODA Award NominationWe are proud to have recently been nominated for a NODA South West ‘Best Musical’ award for our production of ‘Urinetown’ last summer. We find out soon if we’ve won so keep your fingers crossed!
Being a MemberMembership of NODA provides theatre groups and individuals with a wide range of benefits including access to NODA’s advice service at national and regional level, as well as representation to government, access to funding agencies, direct access to rights holders and the media as well as access to regional and national conferences, workshops and seminars to help share information on best practice.

The GroupHoniton Community Theatre Company is a friendly group who perform a pantomime and other plays, musicals and variety shows throughout the year. We have a membership of around 70 people every year, all of whom are keen to help in all aspects of the productions.
Our MembersWe have a wide age range of members and
we’re always looking for new people to join us. Even if you only want to make the tea
and some new friends!
Our ProductionsSince becoming the HCTC (formerly
Honiton Pantomime Society) we have diversified to perform musicals, plays and
variety shows. In May we’ll be trying our hand at a cabaret of songs from
the musicals as well. We love to challenge ourselves and
take on new things.
In The CommunityAs well as our main
Pantomime in Honiton each year and our other productions, we like to keep ourselves involved
in the community, aiding many of the local charities and staging a few fun nights each year.
Joining InIf all of this sounds like your cup of tea, then why not get in touch? We’re always looking for new ways to have fun, and new people to do it with! The best way to get in contact with us is via our website www.honitontheatre.co.uk/contact-us or social media channels.
About Us NODA
The story of Aladdin has origins as a Middle Eastern folk tale. It’s first recorded as one of the tales in The Book of One Thousand and One Nights, or ‘The Arabian Nights’, and is one of the best known in the collection, though it wasn’t added until the 18th century by Frenchman Antoine Galland.
The original version shares many differences to the pantomime you’ll see today. But many of the aspects are still there, the magical genie of the lamp, the spirit of the ring, the riches and palaces, even the evil sorcerer dressing up as an old woman!
You may also notice a lot of differences between the pantomime and Disney’s landmark film musical of the same name. It’s recently
been staged to great acclaim on Broadway and in London in a new production by Disney Theatrical.
But, the pantomime Aladdin, is traditionally set in China, not the Middle East. Widow Twankey is an iconic panto character, and second only to Mother Goose as far as Dames go. The baddie in pantomime is usually called
Abanaza and pantomime scripts often feature various versions of the local police and
emperors.
You’ll also recognise another iconic panto character, Wishee Washee, so named, because of his role in his mother’s laundry. Our Aladdin though, has a takeaway, not a
laundry, and the messy scene is quite something this year! That’s not to mention our panda, Fu Fu, a more popularised panto character since the Kung Fu Panda movies were released.
So let us whisk you away to the world of ancient China, where paupers become kings and pandas save the day. We hope
you enjoy our version of Aladdin as much as we’ve enjoyed rehearsing it.

Special thanksAs always, we’d like to say a huge thank you to The Beehive and their volunteers who work tirelessly to help us bring Aladdin to the stage and sell tickets for the show.
A very talented member of our cast crafted many of the headpieces you’ll see on stage today. Amelia Kyriacou makes all sorts of beautiful one-off pieces of jewellery. [email protected] to find out more.
We would like to thank everybody who has helped by putting up posters in their properties and shops and everybody else who has contributed in any way to the pantomime this year. We are very grateful to have such generous help!
And of course, you! Without your patronage, we would be unable to continue having such good fun!
AladdinChloe Pottinger
You might remember Chloe, as
she’s played many parts
in previous pantomimes like ‘Peter Pan’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’. She’s also performed for Axminster Musical Theatre & East Devon Dance. Chloe is currently studying performing arts at Exeter College.
Widow TwankeyAlex Jackson‘Aladdin’ is
Alex’s tenth pantomime
with HCTC and second year as the dame. His Mum says “he’s enjoying the shoes, tights and dresses far too much.” By day, Alex can be found in The Bike Shed Theatre in Exeter selling tickets and unboxing print, but a guilty pleasure for pantomime is always bubbling under the surface waiting to be unleashed in a frock-covered, wig-wearing, high-heeled week in February.
Wishee WasheeLou PottingerLou is a
renowned local panto comic.
She’s as hilarious off-stage as on stage. She is a wonderful cook too and makes a mean carrot cake. It’s a family affair for Lou as both her daughters and her husband
are involved in ‘Aladdin’ too. Lou can also be seen on the stage at the Axminster Guildhall, most recently in ‘The Full Monty’ .
Fu FuRyan HutterRyan is studying for his GCSEs at HCC
and has featured in many HCTC and
HCC productions in the past like ‘Urinetown’, ‘Les Miserables’ and most recently the role of Pete in ‘Private Peaceful’.
EmperorDave PickerellHaving moved to the area, Dave joined
HCTC over eleven years ago and
since has been a stalwart of amateur dramatics in Honiton. He’s enjoying a busy retirement and can most-recently be recognised as Malvolio in our production of ‘Twelfth Night’ last year.
EmpressHeather WoodbridgeHeather is one of this
year’s ‘new recruits’ and has
already become a fantastic addition to the HCTC family. With plenty of panto experience, having been part of Crowthorne’s local group in a previous life, Heather’s delighted to be making her Beehive debut in ‘Aladdin’.
JasmineKayley Docherty
‘Aladdin’ marks Kayley’s Beehive
debut, but she’s become
a seasoned performer since moving to Devon from South Africa a few years ago. Previous roles include Fantine in ‘Les Miserables’ at HCC and Belarius in ‘Cymbeline’.
So ShyLauren Craig
Lauren is currently studying
performing arts at Exeter College
and is regularly on stage in HCTC and college productions. Most recently, Lauren played Nipper in our produciton of ‘Private Peaceful’ in November and the title role in last year’s panto ‘Peter Pan’.
PC WingLisaChaplin-CookLisa joined HCTC for last
year’s ‘Twelfth Night’ and hasn’t
looked back since. She’s become a regular on stage and a great member of the HCTC family. Most recently she can be recognised from ‘Private Peaceful’ where she played 4 roles!
Principal cast
PC HongJosie Denning
Josie has been a member of the extended
HCTC family for some time,
so we were delighted that she chose to take part in ‘Urinetown’ last summer and audition for a role in ‘Aladdin’ too. You might also spot her blowing her own trumpet (literally- she’s a flugel player) as part of the Sidmouth Town Band who were National Finalists this year and perform concerts throughout the summer at Connaught Gardens.
AbanazaShaun Bonetta
As well as being Chairman of HCTC, Shaun
loves getting up on stage
with lots of boos (he likes a bottle of beer in the bar afterwards too.) “It was all Tracey’s fault” he’s often caught saying as he explains how he ended up in panto. “She said to join the group as Stage Manager. Little did I realise a few years down the line I’d be playing a French Frog in ‘Cinderella’. The rest, as they say, is history.”
TutankahmunTom Lilley
Tom’s first production with HCTC was last
year’s panto ‘Peter Pan’. Since
then, he’s gone from strength to
strength featuring in ‘Twelfth Night’ and most recently as various roles in ‘Private Peaceful’ in November.
GenieCharlie CraigCharlie followed in his daughters
footsteps (once he was
allowed!) to join HCTC for our 2015’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’. From the off, he got into the panto spirit and since has been in many of our shows playing Tumnus the faun in ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ and Orsino in ‘Twelfth Night’. Charlie joined Sidmouth Town Band with Sally Cregan, Amelia Hibbert and Alex Jackson to sing for them at their Last Night of the Proms in the summer.
Spirit ofthe RingAmelia HibbertAmelia joined HCTC for
‘Cinderella’ in 2010 and
since then has played many roles in panto like Tinkerbell in last year’s ‘Peter Pan’. Other appearances for HCTC include Susan in ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ and Hope in ‘Urinetown’. Amelia recently made her professional debut at The Bike Shed Theatre in ‘Out of the Ashes’, an adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s book of the same name.
MummyVal Lloyd
Val’s been in the Honiton Panto for as
long as she can remember
(which isn’t that
long nowadays!). She’s also handy with a needle and thread and recently featured in a TV advert on Sky.
Mummy (Voice)Richard Maddox
Richard joined HCTC with his
daughter Sam, and the first role he played on stage was a king, earning him the nickname of King Richard. Since then, he’s been in lots of the productions as well as keeping a keen eye on our finances as Treasurer. You might also recognise him as Snappy the Croc from last year’s ‘Peter Pan’.
Palace Guard 1Jaron BonettaOne of many Bonetta’s in
this production (they’re
everywhere!), you’ll recognise Jaron as he’s played roles like Hot Blades Harry in ‘Urinetown’, John in ‘Peter Pan’ and Young Charlie in ‘Private Peaceful’.
PalaceGuard 2Lewis BonettaLewis is another
member of our talented youth
section here at HCTC. He was a fab zombie in ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and since has featured in pretty much every show we’ve put on, most recently as ‘Young Tommo’ in ‘Private Peaceful’.

Every year we have some brilliant new talent join our ranks both behind the scenes and under the bright lights of the stage. Here’s two of this years new members talking about their experiences.
Heather WoodbridgeHaving moved to Honiton 2 years
ago I finally took the plunge and joined HCTC last year. From day 1 everybody, of all age groups, made me welcome,
even helping me overcome my nerves when auditioning for this
production. Hopefully they are not regretting that now!
My previous stage experience was in Crowthorne where I played mostly comedy parts, probably because it is hard to take this face seriously. But you don’t have to have experience to join HCTC and everyone is welcome.
I’ve had a brilliant time rehearsing with HCTC and hope to be back to do so again soon.
Kayley DochertyThis may be my first production
with Honiton Community Theatre Company, but never before have I felt so welcome.
The cast and crew were extraordinary to work with as well
as helpful through rehearsals. I have met many new people all of whom never failed to make me feel at home. I feel as if I have gelled so well with the group.
Since joining I feel as though my love for theatre has expanded and that I have been able to gain more experience and confidence within myself. Never for one moment would I regret joining HCTC. ‘Aladdin’ has been a blast and I simply can’t wait to be part of many more productions in the future.
