     ASEAN Literary Festival 2016

The ASEAN Literary Fesval is a cultural event where all ASEAN countries can share

in proximity, familiaries in culture literary interests oen inuenced by the

colonial experience. This Fesval is the rst literary event to focus primarily on the

quality of the ASEAN region’s literary works. By building a bridge between people of

literature and the general public, we aim to promote the cultures, arts and literary

works not only in our region but to the broader global audience.

The fesval presents ASEAN’s poets, novelists, playwrights, crics, scholars and

arsts who perform, share and discuss the role of literature in our cultures which

will help our member countries to foster a just society, encouraging human rightsand democracy.

We are very honored to open the 3rd ASEAN Literary Fesval 2016 with Nobel Prize

Winner José Ramos-Horta. This event will also include an modern Indonesian pup-

pet show and a symphony orchestra from Korea. At a me when our world is both

unpredictable and challenging, we hope to learn from these rich literary exchanges

and experiences year aer year in our broader region.

important to the successful formaonof ASEAN community, which has been

declared by the region’s leaders in De-

    cember 2015.

The countries of the ASEAN region have

many things to be proud of—including

the achievements of its literary writers.

    Unfortunately, unl today, these writers

and their life’s work have not been ade-quately supported and promoted.

While our neighbors in Northeast Asia,

such as Japan and China, and South

Asia, especially India and Pakistan, are

    globally recognized as the connent’s

literary powerhouses, only a few South-

east Asian writers have gained interna-

    onal recognion.

In a world that puts a premium to digital

hype, noise and materialism, it’s easy to

dismiss the fundamental role of writers

and their work. Aer all, it seems that

literature is the last thing that most

people need in the struggle to survive in

    this part of the world.

However, we rmly believe that only

when we have a commensurate num-

Here we are. Against all odds, theASEAN Literary Fesval is coming back

for the third year. We are proud to have

proven our durability and kept our

dream of building a tradion alive. We

feel we are now in a point of no return

as we grow and gain more support

while more people in the region are ex-

pecng the fesval to return each year.

This year the fesval takes the theme“The Story of Now” with dozens of

    sessions discussing pressing issues

    facing our society. From environments

to digital hype and from human rights

    and democracy to refugee problems,

we intend to stay relevant and crical to

open debate and help nd soluons.

The ASEAN Literary Fesval is the rst

event to gather writers from ASEANcountries in one literary event in which

they will share ideas on how writers

can contribute to the enhancement of

    society.

The fesval is being organized as a plat-

form for writers, arsts and the general

public in the region to get to know one

another in greater depth. Thus they

acquire a sense of common identy so

    The Story of Now

ber of masterful writers can the ASEANregion become truly a Socio-cultural

Community, one of the three pillars

    of the envisioned ASEAN Community.

We do have a deep psychological and

spiritual need for such a community.

The words wrien by poets, conists,

    dramasts and other creave writers

will connue to provide us the peoples

of the region with uncommon sense, conscience and wisdom that will guide

    us through upheaval and uncertainty

    long aer policians and bureaucrats

have le the arena of power and have

    descended to oblivion.

Of course, it is lamentable that as we

enter the middle of the second decade

of the 21st century, Southeast Asia hasyet to produce a Nobel Prize winner in

literature. Japan already has two Nobel

laureates, with one more of its own,

Haruki Murakami, a possible winner in

the years ahead. China has Mo Yan as

its rst Nobel laureate while India’s Ra-

bindranath Tagore won the prize as early

as the rst part of the 20th century.

Nevertheless we do have writers who

    have earned global crical acclaim,

including the late novelist PramoedyaAnanta Toer from Indonesia and the

Filipino epic poet Dr. Cirilo F. Bausta.

Both, and perhaps a few others we may

not know about, are as accomplished as

any Nobel laureate. They have proven

that ASEAN, a region of 600 million

people, can also produce literary giants

even if they do not enjoy the support

and the popular global audience thatthey deserve. And even if our region

does not have a tradion of publishing

    that adequately serves the region’s

    creave writers.

Thus, we the organizers of the ASEAN

Literary Fesval, intend to hold more

than just an event. We are here to build

a tradion that will outlast all of us andthat we hope will endure over the cen-

turies ahead so that it will never cease

to provide opportunies for writers to

develop and enjoy the appreciaon that

    is their due.

Nobel Prize Winner Jose Ramos Horta’s

lecture is a proof to our commitment

to present inuenal gures in the

region who have fought for democracy,

    freedom and jusce.

The fesval also presents a series of

    discussions about human rights where

    prominent human rights lawyers,

writers and academics meet to discuss

    pressing humanitarian problems of our

me. With full awarenes we also give

space to “sensive” issues which have

been banned in many places within this

country. From LGBT to 65 tragedy, the

ASEAN Literary Fesval will stand strong

against any censorship and eort toshut down freedom of expression.

We also connue to be innovave and

challenge our creavity to present dis-

    cussions about literature and pressing

issues in a form that can be enjoyed

by more people. Tickets for a talkshow

    presenng Indonesia’s poets, Sapardi

Djoko Damono and Joko Pinurbo, forinstance, have been sold out way be-

We started the ASEAN Literary Fesval

2016 with a residency program where

13 young writers from ASEAN, Timor

Leste and Japan were selected in an

open selecon process. Since April 29

they lived and interacted with residents

of Kampung Muara, a neighborhood of

500 families along the Ciliwung River in

    South Jakarta.

This program was born out of realiza-

on that writers and literature should

become part of the society, and not

monopolized only by elite groups and

a handful of the so-called intellectuals.

With this residency program we hope

that more literary works connect andcan voice problems within the society.

From the very beginning, ASEAN Liter-

    ary Fesval always presents programs

which reect our stance that literature

and literary works should take side with

the public interests, and always voice

and ght for humanity and jusce.

fore the fesval. This shows that people

are sll very much enthusiasc about

literary works, and that interest in

literature is not as bad as we previously

imagined. We just need to push our-

selves closer to to the people, and get

down from the ivory tower, destroying

exclusivism and elism of writers and

    literary works.

From the voices of women and people

of Papua and Timor Leste, from leg-

endary writers to young and emerging

ones, we will connue to try to become

a fesval with programs that reect

    what really happens within literature

and society within the Southeast Asianregion.

     ASEAN Literary Festival 2016

While connuing with a steady commit-

ment to human rights and social jusce

    literature, this year’s ASEAN Literary

Fesval has excelled in aracng not

only the energy of young as well as

    established regional writers but oers

the opportunity to dig deeper in dialogue

with social jusce shapers from our wid-

    er neighbourhood.

    Inving award winning internaonal vi-

sionaries from our region such as Timor

    L’este’s Jose Ramos-Horta and Australia’s

Julian McMahon provides a moment in

    me for ASEAN community members

to listen and discuss the past but also

idenfy the progressive opons that lieon the horizon. What will the literature

reect about our era in the future? Can

we be so bold as to write about the

    future today?

    Social Justice Shapers

This year’s Fesval marks a signicant

achievement in the region where people

can come and learn, contribute, build

networks, write and gain condence in

    an unpredictable and changing world.

    Humanitarian literature expands our

thinking and our awareness about what

can be. This 2016 program of inspira-

on not only tells the “Story of Now”, it

serves to engage networks of diversity

and strengthen the connecons at the

community level for a world in which we

    want to live.

The ASEAN Literary Fesval is rmly

established as a cornerstone event in our

region where the future can be planted, incubated, fostered and nourished.

    On Freedom and Peace

Jose Ramos-Horta is an ex-prime minister

and ex-president of Timor Leste who is

    known as an internaonal peacemaker.

In 1996, José Ramos-Horta was awarded

the Nobel Peace Prize “for their work

toward a just and peaceful soluon to

the conict in East Timor.” While serving

as President and the internaonal voice

of the young government, he personally

    created peace iniaves ranging from

a world class mountain bike “race for

peace” to opening his oce for youth

from neighboring areas to come and

peacefully resolve conicts. His an-pov-erty iniaves, including building homes

for the neediest, lied tens of thousands

out of extreme poverty. His leadership

    and experse have walked Timor-Leste

toward a new era of peace, reconciliaon

    and economic growth. José Ramos-Hor-

ta’s work in taking his country from dev-

astang conict to peace and economic

growth in just over a decade serves as

a model for building democracy in the

twenty rst century. In 2012 he accepted

an appointment from the UN Secretary

General as Special Representave of the

Secretary General to the African naon

    Human Rights X Literature

A human rights advocate and erce

opponent of the death penalty, barris-

ter Julian McMahon has a personal and

    passionate commitment to represent

    Australians in capital punishment cases

abroad. Admied to the Victorian Bar in

1998, for more than 13 years Julian has

    worked without payment for Australians

facing the death penalty. Julian’s clients

include Van Tuong Nguyen in Singapore,

George Forbes in Sudan and members of

the Bali Nine, Andrew Chan and Myuran

Sukumaran. In the months leading up to

the execuons of Chan and Sukumaranin April 2015, the overwhelming de-

mands of their case required Julian and

other lawyers on the case to make many

personal sacrices and, in Julian’s case,

to exclude all other work. Instead, he

remained wholly focused on his clients.

Julian is on the board of Jesuit Social

Services and is now President of Reprieve

    Australia. Arculate and measured, with

    longstanding community involvement,

Julian speaks publicly about the death

    penalty and jusce issues.
