College Programs1. The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center is a 12 month technical program leading to an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Physical Therapist Assistant through articulation with Mineral Area College. Upon successful completion of this program, students may sit for a national board exam and pursue licensure in the state of their choosing

2. Students are required to complete four general education courses (Math, English, Biology, and Medical Terminology / Introduction to Pathology) prior to admission to the Physical Therapist Assistant Program. The PTA Program starts a new class in the fall semester each year. The four required courses should be completed in the preceding spring semester.

3. In all, students complete 24 - 26 credit hours of general education courses in addition to the PTA technical courses in order to satisfy the Associate Degree course work requirements.

4. Students are encouraged to complete all 24 - 26 credit hours of general education prior to the start of their PTA technical courses… however, only 12 credit hours (the four courses discussed above) are required for admission.

5. Students may complete the general education requirements by completing courses offered at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center, being offered by Southeast Missouri State University and Mineral Area College. Students may also complete the general education requirements by completing courses at Southeast Missouri State University, Mineral Area College, Three Rivers Community College, or at other colleges (or by taking equivalent web based courses through these institutions).

Physical Therapist Assistant2-year A.A.S DegreePhysical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) treat patients under the direction of a Physical Therapist. PTAs use therapeutic modalities such as exercise, joint and soft tissue mobilization, endurance training, neuromuscular re-education, and therapeutic application of heat, cold, ultrasound and electrical stimulation to assist patients to move and perform functional activities with the greatest amount of independence possible. Work as a PTA might also include teaching patients how to use orthotics, crutches, canes, walkers or other devices to increase independence. Physical Therapist Assistants are employed by hospitals, schools, skilled nursing facilities, outpatient clinics, and home care agencies. Core PTA courses are 12 months, beginning in the fall semester each year, with classes Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. Clinical rotations include 8-10 hour shifts.

An Associate in Applied Science Degree in Physical Therapist Assistant requires an additional 24 - 26 credits of general education courses.

A minimum $44.75 fee (may be significantly higher depending upon the states that must be checked) must be anticipated by all students for the required Criminal History Background Check.

A $200 deposit due upon enrollment – balance paid in full or financial aid on file at least one week prior to the first class meeting to avoid possible forfeiture of deposit, and removal from the course roster.

Advanced Level Respiratory Therapyv (C.S.) 2-year A.S. DegreeThis health care specialty involves the evaluation and treatment of patients with heart and lung diseases. Respiratory Therapists are in high demand and are employed by hospitals, sleep labs, home care agencies, hyperbaric wound centers, skilled nursing facilities, medical sales, physician offices and other facilities. Core RT courses are 21 months, beginning in August each year, with classes Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. Clinicals include rotating 8 and 12 hour shifts. College courses leading to an Associate of Science Degree in Medical Technology through articulation with Mineral Area College require an additional 24 credits. Initial English, General Psychology, Math and Intro to Medical Terminology/Pathology are taken prior to beginning core RT courses. Auto Collision Technologyv (C.S.) #899This course provides training in auto collision repair, straightening sheet metal with hand and power tools, dent filling with plastics, sanding and masking techniques. Basic instruction in oxyacetylene and MIG welding is given for panel repair. Spray painting is primarily with base coat/clear coat paint systems. $100 deposit due upon enrollment—balance paid in full or financial aid on file at least one week prior to the first class meeting to avoid possible forfeiture of deposit, and removal from the course roster.

HVAC/Rv (C.S.) #901This course provides a general knowledge in refrigeration principals, basic electricity, industry standards, safety and installation techniques as well as system setup, installation and sizing for both residential and light commercial. Students are given the opportunity to test for the required EPA certification at this facility. Students can continue to develop skills as a technician by preparing to take national certification testing, if they so desire. Automotive Technologyv (C.S.) #902Learn about repairing automobiles. This course is an introduction to automotive engines, including theory. Construction and overhaul procedures are taught, as well as student operation of the computerized diagnostic center. Emphasis is placed on Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification. $100 deposit due upon enrollment—balance paid in full or financial aid on file at least one week prior to the first class meeting to avoid possible forfeiture of deposit, and removal from the course roster.

Digital Media Productionv (C.S.) #903This exciting program will prepare students for employment in the field of visual and/auditory communication. Emphasis will be placed on the identification and use of special digital computer operations, production practices, television camera operations, lighting techniques, audio skills and editing capabilities. Weldingv (C.S.) #905Students receive approximately 450 hours of intense welding instruction by a certified welding instructor. This course is based on guidelines of the American Welding Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and starts students on the path for a successful future in welding. $100 deposit due upon enrollment—balance paid in full or financial aid on file at least one week prior to the first class meeting to avoid possible forfeiture of deposit, and removal from the course roster.

Industrial System Technicianv (C.S.) #908Students enrolled in this program will learn general skills in a variety of areas common to industry, specifically fluid power (hydraulics and pneumatics), industrial electrical/electronics and instrumentation, machining, welding, programmable logic control (PLC), motor control automation and blue print reading. This two-year program offers broad-based technical skills and practical hands-on experience in the industrial maintenance career field. Develop skills in such areas as sanitation and safety, gourmet cooking, baking and decorating. Careers ranging from bakers, sandwich prep cooks, entree cooks, deli workers and front of the house positions are explored. Incorporated within the class is actual experience in operating a mini restaurant. Construction Technologyv (C.S.) #914A residential house is constructed during this two-year program, with the completed home sold by sealed bid to the highest bidder. Students will receive instruction and hands-on experience in hand and power tool safety, site preparation and layout, footing and foundation forming, floor and wall framing, sheathing, roof framing, interior wall and floor finishing, exterior window and door installation, and exterior wall finishes. $100 deposit due upon enrollment—balance paid in full or financial aid on file at least one week prior to the first class meeting to avoid possible forfeiture of deposit, and removal from the course roster.

Machine Tool Technologyv (C.S.) #924This course is designed to prepare students for entry-level manufacturing jobs as a machinist. Students will learn to operate a power saw, drill press, lathe, mill, grinder, fabrication and resurfacing of cutting tools. Students will also interpret designs, drawings, and specifications and analyze quality control data. Electrical Tradesv (C.S.) #927This course will provide training in electrical trades. Students will learn how to interpret designs, drawings and specifications. Instruction wil l include constructing, calculating and installing basic residential and commercial circuits. Student will demonstrate the appropriate use of industry codes. Design & Wood Manufacturingv (C.S.) #928This course wi l l provide training in cabinetmaking. Students will be exposed to CNC equipment and CAD software, learn to design, cut, machine and assemble cabinetry components. Projects will include glue and clamp cabinetmaking. Students will also learn to finish and apply laminates/veneers and construct counter tops consistent with industry standards. Once you have earned your A.A.S. Degree, you can transfer to Southeast Missouri State University to complete a Bachelor of Science Degree.

Technology Management:For students planning to pursue a Bachelors Degree following the completion of an Associate of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.), Southeast Missouri State University offers their Technology Management program. This program is designed to provide graduates of an A.A.S. program with a degree plan that leads to the completion of a B.S. Medical Office Specialist (C.S.) #216 Searching for a challenging career in the a medical office? Then check out the Medical Office Specialist (MOS) program here at the CTC. Students will learn the knowledge and skills required to perform in today’s medical office environment. Classes include topics such as medical keyboarding, computer courses, medical terminology, medical office procedures, billing and coding, electronic health records, basic math, and accounting. Students must provide a copy of their high school diploma or GED to enter the program. Students who enroll in the program are required to pass all classes in the program to receive their certificate of completion. This is a semester long day class consisting of 600 hours of classroom work and 120 hours in an internship. $100.00 deposit due upon enrollment-balance paid in full or financial aid on file at least one week prior to the first class meeting to avoid possible forfeiture of deposit, and removal form the course roster. This course does not require Immunizations or a Physical. A score of 3 on the Work Keys test is required for admission.

Certified Nurse Assistant (C.S.) #800 The purpose of this program is to provide training and certification of nurse assistants in a long-term care facility. The day course is nine weeks in length with time divided between classroom and clinical areas. We are currently taking enrollment for all sessions. Shoes, watch, and uniforms have an approximate cost of $150 and must be furnished by student, or purchased through the school. A minimum $44.75 fee (may be significantly higher depending upon the states that must be checked) must be anticipated by all students for the required Criminal History Background Check. A $100.00 deposit is due upon enrollment and balance paid by first class meeting. A score of 4 on the Work Keys test is required for admission.

Certified Medication Technician (C.S.) #801 (Spring Only)The Medication Technician course is designed for Certified Nurse Assistants in nursing homes who would like to increase their skills and learn to administer medications. This challenging course meets Missouri state guidelines. Successful graduates receive state certification in administration of non-parenteral medications. Practice in administering medications is provided through classroom labs, as well as supervised experience in the student’s own facility. Applicants must be Certified Nurse Assistants in Missouri, must pass the TABE test (given at The Career and Technology Center), and be high school graduates or equivalent prior to the start of the course. Must be active on the Missouri State Registry for 6 months prior to class.

Healthcare CareersEmergency Medical Technician (C.S.) #806The EMT Program is a Basic Life Support level program designed to prepare the individual for the application of his or her skills in the field environment of an emergency ambulance. The program will cover all areas of Basic Life Support including airway care, oxygen therapy, patient assessment, trauma, medical emergencies, obstetrics, disaster management, and other topics. The course consists of a minimum of 154 lecture and practical hours, plus 80 hospital/ambulance clinical hours. This program is designed to make the student eligible to sit for the National Registry Practical and Written exams. Students can anticipate an additional expense of approximately $90.00 for uniforms and equipment. Students are to contact the Assessment Center at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center to schedule a pre-admission test in order to complete the enrollment process. The pre-admission Hobet test cost is $50.00. A minimum $44.75 fee (may be significantly higher depending upon the states that must be checked) must be anticipated by all students for the required Criminal History Background Check. Students are responsible for their own test fees. $100 deposit due upon enrollment—balance paid in full or financial aid on file at least one week prior to the first class meeting to avoid possible forfeiture of deposit, and removal from the course roster.Classes are offered twice each year (one beginning in August and again in January). Paramedicv (C.S.) #807The student applying for admission into the Paramedic program must be an EMT and have completed Anatomy and Physiology I (45 hour course) prior to starting the medic program. The program is designed to review the basic skills learned in the EMT program plus provide instruction in the subject of advanced life support. The course will present advanced topics such as physiology, pharmacology, I.V. therapy, patient assessment, airway management, cardiology, trauma, plus certification in ACLS, PALS,NRP, PHTLS, and PEPP. The student will receive a minimum of 536 lecture/lab hours and approximately 600 hours of hospital and pre-hospital internship. This program will prepare the student to sit for the National Registry Certification Exam. A minimum $44.75 fee (may be significantly higher depending upon the states that must be checked) must be anticipated by all students for the required Criminal History Background Check. Students are responsible for their own test fees. Applications are available at the school. Healthcare CareersThe Emergency Operator 3: Ambulance (CEVO3) #809The program includes classroom and practical exercises geared to EMS operators who realize that getting to the scene safely is just as important as the care given at the location of the emergency. While not all collisions occur during emergency operations the CEVO3 program emphasizes safe driving techniques that can be utilized in emergency as well as non emergency driving situations. The program requires participation and contributions from all participants for it to be successful. Student will observe video presentations and apply what they have learned to exercises n their response book, classroom interactions and during practical skills application during the second day of the program. incorporating the skills learned in your daily driving will reduce your chances of being involved in a collision. Current EMT students will be allowed to use the CTC’s ambulance, but those not currently enrolled at the CTC must bring their own ambulance.

Paramedic Refresher Course #824This 48 hour course will satisfy one half of the required core material for Paramedic relicensure in Missouri. Completion of course will also satisfy the National Registry requirement of a 48 hour refresher course for those currently licensed Paramedics wishing to be eligible for National Registry. Participants will be issued a certificate suitable for National Registry documentation upon completion.Classes held as needed—contact Adult Education Office (573) 334-0826. Practical Nursing (C.S.) #915 1-Year Day Program

Meets Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Meets Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 4:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The knowledge, skills and professionalism needed to be competent, effective practical nurses are attained through classroom theory and supervised clinical experiences in the practical nursing program.

The graduates are eligible to apply to take the national computerized licensure exam (NCLEX-PN). Upon passing NCLEX-PN, you are a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). There have been over 800 graduates from this program with a 98% pass rate on NCLEX-PN. LPNs work in a variety of health care settings including hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, physicians offices, schools, surgical centers, and home health agencies.

Applications are taken year around. The pre-entrance test is given from November through May. Upon acceptance into the program by the admissions committee, a $200 deposit is required upon enrollment—balance paid in full or financial aid on file at least one week prior to the first class meeting to avoid possible forfeiture of deposit, and removal from the course roster. Classes begin in late September.

In addition to advanced training in networking, second-year students may choose to work towards certification in other areas within the Information Technology field: Network+, MCP, A+, etc., preparing for entry-level jobs in I.T. General InformationObligation for Payment

Registration constitutes a financial contract between students and the school. Students are ultimately responsible for payment of amounts owed to the school, including instances where anticipated financial aid becomes unavailable. If students do not make payments of amounts owed to the school when they become due, the school has the right to cancel students’ registration; to withhold their grades, transcripts, diplomas, certificates, and to refuse admittance to final exams.

IMPORTANT: Refund Policy:

Post-Secondary CoursesFor post-secondary courses, partial

refunds will be granted to trainees leaving the program with up to 40% of the time remaining in a semester or payment period. After 60% of a semester or payment period has elapsed, course fees are non-refundable. Refunds of more than $100 take four to six weeks to be processed and mailed.

A minimum one hundred dollar ($100.00) deposit as partial payment of tuition is required for Career & Technology Center post-secondary programs. Eighty percent of this deposit is refundable when a written refund request is made before the first day of class. No refund of this deposit is made after the first day of class.

SUBSTANCE ABUSEILLEGAL DRUG POLICY:Illegal drugs will not be permitted on the grounds or inside the buildings operated by the Cape Girardeau CTC. Any violation of such policy will result in immediate disciplinary action and involvement of area law enforcement.

MEDICATIONS:Adult students are permitted to have in their possession, prescription and over-the-counter medications in an amount that shall not exceed their daily dosage. Prescription medications must be within the prescription container. Adults must not share any forms of medication (over-the-counter or prescription) with other students.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSEThe Cape Girardeau School District No 63 is concerned with the health, welfare and safety of the students and guests. Therefore, use, sale, transfer, distribution, possession or being under the influence of unauthorized prescription drugs, alcohol, narcotic substances, unauthorized inhalants, controlled substances, illegal drugs, counterfeit substances and imitation controlled substances is prohibited on any school or clinical site property. This prohibition also applies to any school-sponsored or school-approved activity, event or function, such as a field trip, where students are under the jurisdiction of the school district and/or are representing the his/her program of study. The use, sale, transfer or possession of drug-related paraphernalia is also prohibited.

For the purpose of this policy a controlled substance shall include any controlled substance, counterfeit substance or imitation controlled substance as defined in the Narcotic Drug Act, Section 195.010, RSMo., and in schedules I, II, III , IV and V in section 202(c) of the Controlled Substances Act, 21 U.S.C. 812 (c).

Students may only be in possession of their own prescription or nonprescription medication as detailed in the Cape Girardeau School Board Policy.

The school administration shall have the right to conduct searches, which are reasonable in scope, of persons reasonably suspected to be in violation of this policy. Such searches shall be conducted in accordance with the Cape Girardeau School Board Policy. Upon discovery of any prohibited substance, the local law enforcement agency will be notified.

Any student who, after given an opportunity to present his or her version of the incident, is found by the administration and/or staff to be in violation of this policy shall be subject to immediate termination from the his/her program of study and referral for prosecution. Strict compliance is mandatory. The faculty shall immediately report all incidents involving a controlled substance to the Director and/or Assistant Director of the Career & Technology Center who will in turn notify the local law enforcement agency and the Superintendent. All controlled substances shall be turned over to local law enforcement.

Students with disabilities who violate this policy will be subject to the same disciplinary action as any other student in accordance with the Cape Girardeau School Board Policy.

Students are subject to alcohol and/or drug screening when there is reasonable suspicion that student may be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Refusal to submit to testing or positive test results will result in dismissal from his/her program of study. Cape Girardeau School District reserves the right to select the alcohol/drug screening lab.

UMOS is a non-profit organization that operates the National Farm worker Jobs Program (WIA167) which provides employment and training, educational opportunities, job readiness and placements, and supportive services to qualifying individuals.

The Career and Technology Center offers financial assistance and counseling. However, with an increasing number of applicants and a sometimes lengthy approval process, you are encouraged to apply early. Financial Aid Assistance is by appointment only. To set up your appointment, contact (573) 334-0826. Classes eligible for financial aid are noted by an “v”. Students enrolling in programs eligible for financial aid (indicated by this symbol “v”), must provide proof of a high school diploma from a state or nationally accredited school, or the equivalent (G.E.D.).

Home schooled applicants are asked to provide:• A plan book, diary, daily log, or other written record indicating the subjects taught and the activities engaged in with the student.• A portfolio containing samples of the student’s academic work.• A record of evaluation of the student’s academic progress.• Other written or credible evidence equivalent to the above. NOTE: Home schooled applicants are highly encouraged to complete the GED as a part of the application process due to the expectations of many employers.

Student Financial Responsibility

Students are ultimately responsible for course tuition fees, and other course related expenses regardless of any financial aid that might be available.

Financial Aid Basics• Many programs qualify for Federal Pell Grants and Student Loans in addition to Missouri State Aid programs.

• Students attending “all day” programs that are approximately 6 months in length or longer may be able to utilize Pell Grants, Student Loans, and Missouri State Aid.

• Students attending programs that are less than 6 months in length (or attending only “half day”) have fewer financial aid options available to them.

Getting Started• The foundational step for most students is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can go online to www.fafsa.ed.gov to complete your application, or visit our office for assistance.

• Students planning to start classes in the fall of 2013 must complete the 2013/2014 FAFSA.

• Once you have received results from your FAFSA, our office will assist you in finalizing your financial arrangements. Please call to set up an appointment to discuss student loans or other financial aid options.

Agency Sponsorships• Students often qualify for assistance from local agencies offering employment and training assistance on behalf of their local Workforce Investment Board. Please contact our office for further information about an Agency office near you.

Registration Registration procedures and price vary by assessment. Inquiries regarding registration may be made directly to the Assessment Center at (573) 334-0826, extension 6509.

Payment for assessments must be made in advance of the testing date. Payment can be made:

• in person with check, cash, or debit/credit card, • by mail with personal check, or • by phone with a debit/credit card.

RefundsNotice of cancellation must be received

at least 24 hours prior to the testing date for a full refund; a late cancel/rescheduling fee of $10 will be applied after this time period. The testing fee is non-refundable past the testing date.

AdmittanceA current picture ID is required for

admittance to most exams. No electronic devices such as cell phones, pagers, unauthorized calculators, etc. are allowed in the testing rooms. Test takers will be asked to lock personal items in a secure locker while testing.
