CME CE INFORMATION/Statement of Need

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in theUnited States. Cardiologists and Radiologists who readcardiovascular angiography require updated ongoingCTtraining and exposure to cardiovascular scanning tech-niques, rapidly changing technologies and utilization criteria.Staying up-to-date and addressing the ever-changing gapsfaced during daily practice will improve barriers to practiceand ultimately improve patient outcomes.

Overview and Objectives

The 9th Annual Scientific Meeting is designed toSCCTengage physicians and healthcare professionalsinterpreting cardiac CT in a comprehensive exploration ofthe most current developments in the field ofcardiovascular CT principles, methodologies, appropriateness criteria and clinical practice. Didacticlectures, image-based case examples, and the research incardiovascular CT are designed to increase thecompetence and performance of the physician andtechnologist performing and interpreting cardiac CT. Theannual meeting will focus on the technological advances,as well as the potential applications and limitations ofcardiovascular CT.

At the conclusion of this activity, the participants shouldbe better able to:

Discuss with colleagues the parameters which result inmaximum image quality while minimizing radiationexposure during cardiac CT

Identify potential common image artifacts whichcontribute to inappropriate analysis of cardiac scansCT

Determine when an alternative imaging method wouldimprove the diagnosis of a specific cardiac anomaly

Critically evaluate those data which indicate potentialapplications of cardiac in other patient studiesCT

Discuss the appropriateness criteria with colleaguesand patients

Evaluate the emerging research in cardiac toCTdetermine its possible role in changing the currentevidence-based protocols or stimulating additionalresearch

Arthur S. AgatstonCardiovascular Disease Prevention Award

SCCT is pleased to present the Arthur S. AgatstonCardiovascular Disease Prevention Award toPrediman K. Shah, MD.

The award is designed to promote the prevention ofdeath from heart disease by recognizing individualswhose pioneering efforts have saved lives from aleading killer throughout the world, coronary arterydisease.

SCCT recognizes Dr. Shah for his lifelongcontributions to achieve disease prevention in thefield of cardiology, in particular for his leadingresearch in understanding against atherosclerosisand vascular inflammation — the processes thatlead to clogged arteries, heart attacks, and strokesatherosclerosis. Credited with the discovery ofvascular benefits of a mutant protein — apo A-1Milano which is strongly preventive ofatherosclerosis, Dr. Shah is currently working on thedevelopment of new preventive drugs as well as avaccine against atherosclerosis. Dr. Shah has editedthree books on heart disease and more than 600original scientific publications.

Prediman K. Shah, MD

“I am deeplyhumbled andhonored by thisaward; it isparticularlymeaningful sinceDr. Agatstonwas a medicalresident with mewhen I was acardiology fellow inNew York. SeeingDr. Agatstonachieve welldeserved notorietyfor his efforts inprevention hasbeen extremelygratifying.”
