The international symposium EuroBioMat 2015 addresses the gro-wing interest of science, industryand medicine in the differentaspects of the creation, characte-rization, testing and application ofbiomaterials and closely relatedmaterials.

The motivation is not only therecent scientific progress and newchallenges of this exciting, stronglyinterdisciplinary field of scienceand engineering but also thatengineers, materials scientists,physicists, chemists, biologists inindustrial R&D as well as medicalprofessionals are increasinglyfacing situations where materialsare challenged by high performan-ce requirements and a complexbiological environment at the sametime.

The DGM and its panel of expertsin biomaterials address these deve-lopments with the European sym-posium Euro BioMat 2015 in beau-tiful Weimar with its rich culturalheritage and classical sites.At Euro BioMat 2015, the currentstate of progress in biomaterialsscience and in industry will be pre-sented and discussed. Moreover,this symposium stimulates thescientific exchange on severaltopics with major challenges andurgent need for novel engineeringapproaches as, e.g., in the fields ofantimicrobial biomaterials, bioac-tive and biodegradable materials,and drug and gene delivery, toname only a few.

From biological self-assembly to peptide nanostructures ofunique chemical and physical properties

Organic nanotechnology is clearly a new front in the field of molecular self-assembly of new structures and composi-te families at the nano-scale. Our works on the mechanism of aromatic peptide self-assembly, lead to the discoverythat the diphenylalanine recognition motif self-assembles into peptide nanotubes with a remarkable persistencelength. Other aromatic homodipeptides (including those with non-coded amino acids as DOPA) could self-assemblein nano-spheres, nano-plates, nano-fibrils and hydrogels with nano-scale order. The modification of peptide buildingblocks with the Fmoc protecting group allows the formation of hydrogels with nano-scale order. We demonstratedthat the peptide nanostructures have unique chemical, physical and mechanical properties including ultra-rigidity asaramides, semi-conductive, piezoelectric and non-linear optic properties. We also demonstrated the ability to usethese peptide nanostructures as casting mould for the fabrication of metallic nano-wires and coaxial nano-cables.The application of the nanostructures was demonstrated in various fields including electrochemical biosensors, tissueengineering, and molecular imaging. We had developed ways for depositing of the peptide nanostructures and theirorganization. We had use inkjet technology as well as vapour deposition methods to coat surface and from the pept-ide “nano-forests”. We recently demonstrated that even a single phenylalanine amino-acid can form well-orderedfibrilar assemblies of distinct electron diffraction pattern and toxic properties. The combination of DNA propertiesand peptide backbone in the form of Peptide Nucleic Acid (PNA) resulted in light emitting assemblies that exhibitboth stacking and Watson-Crick base-pairing.

Cell-instructive Surfaces via Nanotopography

Smart materials which can deter bacteria while enhance tissue integration arehighly desirable for application in implants where there is often a competition between host tissue cell integrationand bacterial colonisation at their surfaces. It has been known that both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells are respon-sive to chemical and physical cues of material surfaces under complex physiological conditions. The question iswhether we can utilise their different responses to rationally design medical implants or devices that possess cell-instructive characteristics. Here we show that a straightforward physical rationale - nanotopography, can beengineered into titanium substrates to elicit differential cell responses. The inspiration comes from cicada wingswhose surfaces have been shown to display bactericidal nanopillar patterns. The engineered surfaces in this work aretitania (TiO2) nanowire arrays that (i) are selectively bactericidal against motile bacteria, and (ii) can guide mammali-an cell proliferation and differentiation according to their hierarchical structure of nanowire arrays. These cell-instruc-tive properties, together with the ease of fabrication of these titania nanowires, hold great promise for fabrication ofsmart implants used in orthopaedics and dentistry.

Nano-Structurd Biomaterials for Regenerative Tissue Engineering

Peter I. Lelkes is the Laura H. Carnell Professor and Founding Chair of the Department of Bioengineering in the Col-lege of Engineering at Temple University. Dr. Lelkes is also the Inaugural Director of the Institute for RegenerativeMedicine and Engineering (TIME) at Temple University's School of Medicine and Professor for Cancer Biology at theFox Chase Cancer Center. Prior to that he was from 2000-2011 the Calhoun Chair Professor in the School of Biome-dical Engineering, Science and Health Systems at Drexel University in Philadelphia with adjunct appointments in theDepartments of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics (College of Engineering) and Pathology, Biochemistry andSurgery (College of Medicine). Currently Prof. Lelkes directs a broad interdisciplinary program in regenerative tissueengineering, focusing on nanotechnology-based biomaterials and soft tissue engineering, employing developmentalbiological principles to enhance the tissue-specific differentiation of embryonic and adult stem cells towards pulmo-nary, cardiac and neuronal lineages. Dr. Lelkes has organized several Keystone conferences, published more than 190peer-reviewed papers, authored several books and more than 50 book chapters and made more than 400 presenta-tions nationally and internationally.

Dr. Lelkes' basic and translational research has been support by federal (NIH, NSF, NASA, DOE) and state fundingagencies (NTI and PA Dept. of Commerce, Tobacco Settlement Funds) and private Foundations, including the Craig H.Neilsen Foundation and the Coulter Foundation. Dr. Lelkes has been the team leader for tissue engineering at theNanotechnology Institute of Southeastern Pennsylvania (NTI) and is the Co-Director of PATRIC, the PennsylvaniaAdvanced Textile Research and Innovation Center, focusing on BioNanoTextiles and Stem Cell Biology.Dr. Lelkes has received numerous honors and awards, nationally and internationally. Reduction of implant-associated infections – a clinical view

Implant-associated infections remain a huge challenge in orthopaedic and orthopaedic trauma surgery and there is atremendous need for antimicrobial biomaterials. The intention of this work is to highlight the clinical perspective,underlying pathophysiological mechanisms and surgical treatment options for implant-asssociated infections with afocus on antimicrobial biomaterials. Biofilm-building and intracellular invasion strategies are among the most rele-vant virulence factors of bacteria involved in implant infections. Biomaterials are of high interest as they enable thelocal delivery of antibiotics to the wound without any significant systemic side effects. Ideal biomaterials for the usein implant-associated bone infections should be safe in its use without disturbance of wound healing and biodegra-dable without the need for removal of the material. Furthermore, it should enable the loading with different antibio-tics according to the antibiogram of the infection causing germ and ensure reliable release kinetics above the mini-mal inhibitory concentration of the bacteria. Osteoconductive or even osteoinductive properties are desirable for theenhancement of new bone formation. Close cooperation between material researches, clinicians and the industry isneeded is needed for the improvement of antimicrobial biomaterials in the future.

From 1995 to 2006, ClaudeRieker had the global responsibility ofall research activities in tribology forSulzer / Zimmer and developed / optimi-zed all the bearings within the portfolioof Sulzer / Zimmer. During these 11years of research, Claude Rieker gainedextensive knowledge on hard-on-hardbearings, on highly cross-linked poly-ethylene technologies, and also on alltribologic aspects of total joint arthro-plasties. The key results of these activi-ties have been published in peer-revie-wed journals. For the last 9 years, Clau-de Rieker has the responsibility of theEuropean Scientific Affairs for Zimmer.

Ralf KlabundeVP Engineering - icotec AG, Altstätten, Switzerland Mr. Klabunde brings close to 20 yearsof experience and leadership in themedical device industry to his currentrole. At icotec he is leading icotec's ent-ire product development functions toapply icotec's high strength, continuousfiber composite technology to medicaldevices (trauma and spine) and to highperformance industrial applications,such as in automotive and aerospace.Before joining icotec in 2014, he heldresponsibility for the EMEA productdevelopment functions of DePuy Spine,

a Johnson & Johnson company. From1997 to 2011 he served in R&D roles ofincreasing responsibility for SulzerMedica, which in 2003 became acqui-red by Zimmer. 2 - Goethe's Home and GoetheNational Museum.....provide the most important evi-dence of the Weimar classics. One of the most important exam-ples of Classical Weimar, JohannWolfgang von Goethe lived in thisBaroque house for almost fiftyyears. He lived there from 1782 to1789 as a tenant, then from 1792to 1832 as the owner. The poetplanned the form and furnishing

of the rooms as well as its richcollections, e.g. in the Juno Room.The furnishings and fittings fromthe last few years of Goethe’s lifehave largely been preserved. Forreasons of conservation, the num-ber of visitors is limited.

3 - The Bauhaus-Museum. TheBauhaus comes from WeimarThe Bauhaus, opened in April1919 in Weimar, located in Dessaubeginning in 1925 and closeddown by the National Socialists in Berlin in 1933, is Germany’smost influential and successful cultural export item of the 20thcentury. The reputation of thisinterdisciplinary internationalschool of art, architecture, designand stage enjoys worldwide time-liness today, more than 70 yearsafter its closure.

4 - City Palace After several fires before, in 1774,the three-wing annex was againdestroyed by fire, with only theenclosure walls left standing. DukeCarl August convened a palaceconstruction commission under thedirection of Goethe. These arememorial rooms in honour of Christoph Martin Wieland, JohannGottfried Herder, Friedrich Schillerand Johann Wolfgang Goethe. Thecity palace has been used as amuseum since 1923. It is also theadministrative headquarters of theKlassik Stiftung Weimar.

5 - Buchenwald memorialThe infamous Nazi concentrationcamp known as Buchenwald exi-sted between 1937 and 1945 onEttersberg. InAugust 1945, the site was conver-ted by the Soviet occupying forcesinto an internment camp. The research of the Otto SchottInstitute of Materials Research(OSIM) at the Friedrich Schiller Uni-versity Jena focuses on relations-hips between the structure, pro-perties, processing and performan-ce of a wide range of materialclasses.

At the Chair of Materials Scienceat OSIM, investigations focus onmaterials for life sciences, polymernanostructures & thermodynamicsand composite materials with aspecial emphasis on the materialsinterfaces. In the field of biomate-rials, novel protein-based biomate-rials, antimicrobial materials surfa-ces for inhibiting biofilm formati-on, dental materials and drug deli-very systems just to name a few,are created, characterized, andbiologically tested. Applications areranging from the medical field topharmacy and biotechnology.Molecular self-assembly mecha-nisms of protein nanofibers, nano-structured surfaces with antimicro-bial effect and polymer-graphene-based nanocomposites for drugdelivery purposes recently attrac-ted the interest of the scientists atOSIM.

Goals and Objectives

• Addressing the industrial andscientific issues in the area ofknown and new materials withinterfaces to biological systems,with focus on materials in medi-cine.

• Development of a scientificallybased understanding of materialsproperties in interaction with biological systems, especially the area of "biological performance"and biocompatibility.

Materials characterization at OSIMcomprises the application of state-of-the-art instrumental techniquessuch as in situ atomic force micros-copy and quartz-crystal microba-lance, X-ray photoelectron spec-troscopy and field emission scan-ning electron microscopy withfocused ion beam, ellipsometryand more.The Chair in Materials Scienceinitiated the panel of experts inbiomaterials of the DeutscheGesellschaft für Materialkunde(DGM) and laid the foundation ofthis Euro BioMat symposium.

7. The "Deutsche Nationalthea-ter und Staatskapelle Weimar"The successor of the Weimar CourtTheatre, whose director was onceGoethe. The neoclassical structurewas completed in 1908. Over thedecades, it has been rebuilt anumber of times and also hostedseveral important political events,the best-known of which is thefoundation of the Weimar Repu-blic. Nowadays the German Na-tional Theatre is home to the mostimportant theatrical company inThuringia as well as the Staatska-pelle Weimar orchestra.

The Historical Library (DuchessAnna Amalia Library) is one of themost famous libraries in Germany.Anna Amalia had the ‘Green Pala-ce’ turned into a library comprisinga unique combination of books, anart collection and architecture. TheRococo Hall is especially famous.On the evening of September 2nd2004, a devastating fire broke outin the original building of the Her-zogin Anna Amalia Library anddeveloped into the largest libraryfire in Germany since WW II.The historical building, whichbelongs to the UNESCO WorldHeritage, was damaged by fire andwater, and the third floor and theattic were completely destroyed.

9. Thuringian Bratwurstis the tradition-minded choiceamong the normal selection of fastfood. The Thuringian grilled sausa-ge is a local specialty. According toEU regulations, the sausage is atleast 15-20 cm long, consisting ofmedium-finely ground, heartilyseasoned sausage meat encased ina thin natural casing, either raw orcooked. For the Thuringian, hissausage – just like his “Rostbrätl”(grilled pork cutlet) – is not simplya food, it symbolises a way of lifethat is expressed by the way it isprepared and eaten.

6. Park on the River Ilmis a place for intellectual activity,relaxation and entertainment -both in the past and the present.Goethe sought the closeness tonature - and found it. The 48-hectare landscaped park on theedge of Weimar’s old town is partof a kilometre-long stretch ofgreen along the Ilm. It was laidbetween 1778 and 1828 and fea-tures both sentimental, classicaland post-classical/romantic styles.Important characteristics of thepark include the numerous lines ofsight linking features such asGoethe’s garden house, the RomanHouse and the bark house withinthe park; these also connect themwith the surrounding countryside.
