The Museu Colecção Berardo housed in the Belem Cultural Center holds a treasure trove of works of

modern masters of art such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Francis Bacon and Jackson Pollock.

The collection is strong in European and American art both of the 20th

1990s. After her participation in the 51st International Art Exhibition– la Biennale di Venezia in 2005, her

work became known internationally. Recent highlights of her career include Trafaria Praia, project for the

Pavilion of Portugal at the 55th International Art Exhibition– la Biennale di Venezia (2013); a solo exhibition

at the Château de Versailles, France (2012); participation in the group exhibition 'The World Belongs to You'

at the Palazzo Grassi/François Pinault Foundation, Venice (2011); and her first retrospective, held at the

Museu Coleção Berardo, Lisbon (2010). Between June and November 2018 Joana Vasconcelos will have a

major exhibition at the Bilbao Guggenheim.

Gulbenkian Museum and the Art Library, gardens, a large auditorium and the Modern Art Centre.

09:00 am – Departure to a day trip to Douro Valley. Its landscape is classified as “World Heritage”

by Unesco and it is the oldest “DOC” region in the world with several of the wines produced there

being in the top ten of the “Wine Spectator” magazine.

11:00 am - Arriving at Vila Real. You will visit the Palácio de Mateus and its gardens. Designed by

Nicolau Nasoni in the 18th

century, the palace is one of the jewels of the Portuguese Baroque style.(Note: He

was the architect of the Igreja dos Clérigos and Torre dos Clérigos you will visit in Porto.)

12:00 am - From there you will drive through the Douro Valley for wine tastings and a visit to Quinta do

Vallado, a traditional estate from one of the most prestigious and famous wine families.

1:30 pm - Drive through N222 road, considered in the past few years as the most beautiful scenic road in the

world. Lunch at DOC Restaurant, owned by the Michelin star chef Rui Paula.

04:30 pm - Visit the Douro Museum.

06:30 pm - Return to the hotel

09:30 am - Departure to Leça da Palmeira to a special architectural tour of Alvaro SizaVieira´s swimming

pools and Casa de Chá da Boa Nova. Álvaro Siza was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1992 and is the most

renowned Portuguese Architect. Siza´s architecture whose structures, ranging from swimming pools to public

housing buildings, are characterized by a quiet clarity of form and function, a sensitive integration into their

environment and a purposeful engagement with both cultural and architectural traditions.

Walking tour to visit Praça dos Leões (Square of the Lions), Igreja dos Clérigos and Torre dos Clérigos

(this Baroque church and tower were designed by Nicolau Nasoni in the 18th

century) and finally the amazing

Livraria Lello, a neo-Gothic bookstore dating to 1881 considered several times to be the most beautiful

bookshop on the planet.

Proceed to visit the tiles of the São Bento train station and the main square of Porto – Avenida dos Aliados

and the recently renovated Rua das Flores where the buildings keep the typical Porto’s façade and other

landmarks in the same area: the Palácio da Bolsa (Stock Exchange Palace), the Instituto do Vinho do Porto

and the Baroque Church of São Francisco covered in gold from Brazil

05:00 pm–Visit and wine tasting in a traditional Port Wine Cellar House. The afternoon will end with a

small Cruise aboard a “rabelo”, typical boat to transport Port Wine down the Douro river.

Day 8 – 25 Sep (TUE): PORTO

09:30am – Departure to visit Casa da Música

Special architectural tour of the Casa de Música (Music House) by Dutch architect Rem Koolhas, a piece

of sculpture in itself it is one of the most interesting new buildings in Porto. The auditorium was designed to

mark the festive year of 2001, in which the city of Porto was designated European Capital of Culture.

On 18 hectares Foundation and Serralves Contemporary Art Museum are a world-class center for

cutting-edge international contemporary art. The museum is a minimalist building designed by Pritzker

Prize-winning architect, Alvaro Siza Vieira.The two buildings on the site (the Art Deco house of Conde De

Vizela is the second structure) are surrounded by fantastic gardens with contemporary sculptures (including

the gigantic shovel by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen).

The Serralves Foundation’s mission is to raise the public's awareness of contemporary art and the

environment. The Foundation pursues its mission via the following avenues: the Museum of Contemporary

Art as a multi-disciplinary centre, the Park as a natural heritage site ideally suited for environmental

education and entertainment activities, and the Auditorium as a centre for reflection and debate on issues

facing contemporary society.

In addition to serving as the Foundation’s head office, Serralves Villa is reserved for presentation of

temporary exhibitions. Originally designed as a private residence and unique example of Art Deco

architecture, the Villa and the park inspired by the modernists are notable both in the fields of architecture

09:30 am–After breakfast, you will be taken to the historical town of Guimarães – the cradle of Portugal -

passing through the countryside planted with vines and fruit trees.

10:30 am–Arrival at Guimarães and visit the Paço dos Duques de Bragança and the old part of town

the history and heritage Guimarães has grown into a very lively city. This combination led to Guimarães’

nomination as the European Capital of Culture in 2012. The Plataforma das Artes e Criatividade is one of

Guimarães into a multifunctional space dedicated to artistic, cultural and economic-social activity.

LX Factory – A factory complex from 1846 was reborn in 2008 as a "factory" of creativity and

experiences. It kept the industrial spaces and invited companies related to the arts, which

fashion to books, to vintage furniture and contemporary design, next to dining options.

8. In the Cais do Sodré area:

Mercado da Ribeira - Traditional market and food court, with canteen-style communal

tables, opened in May of 2014 and has become a major food destination.

It mixes stalls from top chefs with different brands of local products, and the foods range

from seafood to steak sandwiches, hamburgers, sushi and ice cream, among other

specialties.

In the first floor of Mercado da Ribeira you have the new Pap’Açorda restaurant. It is worth

a visit!
