Program Notes While many people are familiar with the story ofWolfgang AmadeusMozartrsquos Requiem K 626 which was left unfinished upon Mozartrsquosdeath far fewer people are aware that Mozart left an even moreambitious vocal work the ldquoGreatrdquoMass in C minor K 427 (K 417a)incomplete as well If the tale of the Requiem is the basis of greatdramamdashas demonstrated in the 1984 Academy Award-winning flmAmadeusmdashthen the mystery of the Mass in C minor is its musicalequivalent After two hundred years of sleuthing and speculation itremains unclear why Mozart composed the mass as well as why henevercompletedit

AlthoughMozart hadwritten a number ofmasseswhile employed bythePrinceArchbishopof SalzburgHieronymusvonColloredo hewasgonefromtheprincersquoscourtforoverayearwhenhebegantocomposetheMass in C minor in the summer of 1782 Mozartrsquos single piece ofcorrespondence concerning the mass only adds to the mystery In aletter dated January 14 1783 to his father Leopold Mozart wroteelliptically that ldquothe score of half of a mass which is still lying herewaitingtobefinishedisthebestproofthatIreallymadethepromiserdquoWhilethepromiseMozartalludedtointheletterhastraditionallybeeninterpreted as an olive branch to his fatherwhohadnot approvedofMozartrsquos recent marriage or as an ode of thanksgiving to his wifeConstanze recent research hints thatMozart had promised his fatherthat he would reconcile with Archbishop Colloredo According to thistheorythemasswasmeantasapeaceoffering

HoweverthishypothesisraisesmorequestionsthanprovidesanswersThe reforms of Joseph II had severely curtailed the performances oflargescaleconcertedchurchmusicEvenMozartrsquosincompletemass(theKyrieGloriaandSanctus)wouldhaveexceededthe lengthofa typical45-minute service Furthermore theMass in C minorwas written incantata stylewhich divided the text of theMass into small individualmovements split between soloists and chorus Performances of suchmasses had become rare by the 1780s with preference given tothrough-composedmasseswherethetextissungwithoutinterruptionTherefore it is unlikely that the finished parts of the mass werepremiered on October 26 1783 as once believed Indeed availablesources mention the performance of a mass by Mozart but notnecessarilyanewoneAlthoughthereisapossibilitythattheMassinC

minor was written on a commission for a Viennese ldquomusicalcongregationrdquo that went defunct before Mozart completed the workevidenceforthishasyettocometolight

GiventhecurrentdearthofinformationweareleftwithonepossibilityMozart wrote the mass to demonstrate to himself his mastery ofcounterpoint as practiced by George Frideric Handel and JohannSebastian Bach Shortly after Mozart moved to Vienna in 1781 hebecameacquaintedwithBaronGottfriedvanSwietenwho introducedtheyoungcomposertothescoresofHandelandBachincludingMessiahwhichMozartwould laterreorchestrateandtheMass inBminorBWV232 Indeed the Mass in C minor demonstrates a new breadth andsubtletyinMozartrsquosfugalwriting

ButwhydidMozartnevercomplete themassWhileMozart re-textedtheKyrieandGloria for thesacredcantataDavidepenitenteK469heleft theCredounfinishedbefore thecrucifixiontextand leftonlya fewsketches for theAgnusDei In addition theSanctus is partially lost aswell If theMass inCminorwaswrittenoncommission itwouldhavemade sense to abandon it after the commission was no longerforthcoming PerhapsMozart felt that he hadmasteredwhat he couldfrom Bach and Handel and no longer was compelled finish thecompositionRegardlessmusicologistshavetriedtocompletetheworkoverthepast200yearsThefragmentarymasswasfirstprintedin1840byJohannAntonAndreacutewhohadpurchasedMozartrsquosestatein1800theVienneseconductorJosephDrechslerperformedacompletionin1847The mass languished in relative obscurity until Alois Schmitt aconductor from Dresden and musicologist Ernst Lewicki publishedtheir completion of the mass in 1901 While Schmitt and Lewickirsquosversionbecamethestandardeditionforperformancesuntilthe1950sitwascriticizedforbloatingtheorchestratoromanticproportionsandclumsilyadaptingotherMozartworks to fill in themissingsections ItwasnotuntilAmericanmusicologistHCRobbinsLandoncreatedanewedition of the surviving parts in 1956 for the publishing houseEulenberg that the supremacy of the Schmitt-Lewicki edition waschallenged Since then a number of completions have come intocirculation including ones by Helmut Eder Richard Maunder (forOxfordUniversityPress) PhilipWilby (forNovello)Robert Levin (forCarus-VerlagwhichtheHandelSocietyisperformingthisevening)andmost recentlyBenjamin-GunnarCohrs (forMusikproducktionHoumlflich)While these completions differ greatly inmusicalmaterial all share agreater fidelity toMozartrsquos style aswell asgreaterunderstandinganduseofsketchandothersourcematerial

Program Notes While many people are familiar with the story ofWolfgang AmadeusMozartrsquos Requiem K 626 which was left unfinished upon Mozartrsquosdeath far fewer people are aware that Mozart left an even moreambitious vocal work the ldquoGreatrdquoMass in C minor K 427 (K 417a)incomplete as well If the tale of the Requiem is the basis of greatdramamdashas demonstrated in the 1984 Academy Award-winning flmAmadeusmdashthen the mystery of the Mass in C minor is its musicalequivalent After two hundred years of sleuthing and speculation itremains unclear why Mozart composed the mass as well as why henevercompletedit

AlthoughMozart hadwritten a number ofmasseswhile employed bythePrinceArchbishopof SalzburgHieronymusvonColloredo hewasgonefromtheprincersquoscourtforoverayearwhenhebegantocomposetheMass in C minor in the summer of 1782 Mozartrsquos single piece ofcorrespondence concerning the mass only adds to the mystery In aletter dated January 14 1783 to his father Leopold Mozart wroteelliptically that ldquothe score of half of a mass which is still lying herewaitingtobefinishedisthebestproofthatIreallymadethepromiserdquoWhilethepromiseMozartalludedtointheletterhastraditionallybeeninterpreted as an olive branch to his fatherwhohadnot approvedofMozartrsquos recent marriage or as an ode of thanksgiving to his wifeConstanze recent research hints thatMozart had promised his fatherthat he would reconcile with Archbishop Colloredo According to thistheorythemasswasmeantasapeaceoffering

HoweverthishypothesisraisesmorequestionsthanprovidesanswersThe reforms of Joseph II had severely curtailed the performances oflargescaleconcertedchurchmusicEvenMozartrsquosincompletemass(theKyrieGloriaandSanctus)wouldhaveexceededthe lengthofa typical45-minute service Furthermore theMass in C minorwas written incantata stylewhich divided the text of theMass into small individualmovements split between soloists and chorus Performances of suchmasses had become rare by the 1780s with preference given tothrough-composedmasseswherethetextissungwithoutinterruptionTherefore it is unlikely that the finished parts of the mass werepremiered on October 26 1783 as once believed Indeed availablesources mention the performance of a mass by Mozart but notnecessarilyanewoneAlthoughthereisapossibilitythattheMassinC
