MANAGER’S NOTES

Another big game and one which we cannot let

slip. We need to continue putting pressure on the

two clubs above us so a win vs College 1975 will

do precisely that! We will try and score as many

goals as possible and buff up our goal difference

as, the way things are looking like, we are going

to need the goals just in case there is a three way

tie on points. We cannot rest on our laurels -

each game is crucial and pivotal. You, the fan,

play a massive role as our support and we are

honoured to play for all of you.

Welcome to tonight’s game

On paper, it should be straight forward, but, we all know that football is a funny old game. Arsenal beating Crystal Palace yesterday should have been straight forward, but it was 1-1.

If we do take the 3 points then it is seven victories out of seven which will be a new club record. The pressure will be on Mons Cape and Europa Point not to slip up. But they must slip us for us to stand a chance of coming first (automatic promotion) or second (play-off versus second from bottom in the Premier).

The 2-0 victory against Mons Calpe was momentous. Going 1-0 up after 3 minutes with a screamer from Reece Placid settled the nerves and reminded our fan base why they should turn up 5 mins before kick-off not 5 mins after! 17 yellow cards was somewhat farcical. I don’t think either team deserved so many. It was a feisty, tense affair but not aggressive to that extent. The fans were in good voice though and I know the team love the support.

Tonight the bar inside the ground should be open. They only open for highly attended games and I think they have realised the Magpies’ following deserves a dedicated bar. Hope it works out for everyone.

Finally, we launch the 2016/17 sponsorship packages soon. We are looking to build on this year’s success and grow the club. Hope you can all be part of that journey in whichever way you can.

Enjoy the game.

It was pre-empted as one of the biggest games of the month in the Second Division and you could almost smell the tension in the air as two of the divisions big boys went head to head in what proved to be a yellow card bonanza as both teams exerted the patience of trigger happy referee Parody.

The game began with a bang as Magpies struck within 5 minutes of the start of the

game as Reece Placid drove a clean hit down low and past the Mons Calpe keeper who managed to get a hand on to the ball but failed to keep it out. The game was like a game of chess as both managers played to their strengths and moved their pieces around the chess board to suit the game as it developed and Mons Calpe looked the more assured of the two teams going forward as they created chance after chance although failed to convert any.

Magpies keeper Fernando Diaz produced a great stop from a long distance shot as he managed to just tip it over the bar and although Mons Calpe placed incredible pressure on the Magpies defence, it was “The Maggies” who hit them on the counterattack as a ball down the wing for powerhouse Max Bothen saw his stinging effort crawl into the bottom corner as the Mons keeper, who once again got a clean pair of hands onto the ball, failed to keep it out.

Mons Calpe were not to be deterred and continued to press and attack although referee Parody signalled for the end of the first half, a very tactical game which had seen Mons Calpe playmaker “Rubencito” man marked by Magpies defensive midfielder Luke Watts.

The second half began with much of the same as Magpies tried to slow the game down and did so efficiently much to the despair of the Mons Calpe fans and staff who were beginning to get agitated with how the game was panning out for them. 5 minutes into the half and a moment of madness ensued as Magpies had a player sent off in rather bizarre circumstances. Magpies were about to introduce Harry Perry for Luke Watts and as the sub was being made and Watts was already with his shirt off heading towards the dressing room, assistant referee Laghdas insisted that Perry was not on the team-sheet despite the team sheet produced by Laghdas been one for a game 2-3 weeks ago involving another second division team. Watts was asked to return to the playing field and the defensive midfielder was booked again for having his shirt off whilst on the field of play although he took it off as he was heading towards the changing room and off the field of play.

Despite this set back, Magpies continued to be resolute whilst Mons Calpe, frustrated due to their inability to convert their clear chances, were beginning to shift out of the game. Central defender Scott Kelly saw a second yellow card midway through the second half and normality on the playing field followed as both teams played with 10 men each for the remainder of the game.

Mons Calpe had a brilliant chance to reduce the deficit with 10 minutes left but Fernando Diaz was on point to save a brilliant one on one as the game petered out with Magpies triumphing over Mons Calpe 2-0.

Magpies remain in third after this victory although they are just 3 points behind the leaders Mons Calpe and Europa Point although Europa have a game on hand over both sides. With 4 games still remaining in the season and the gap

now just 3 points, anything could potentially still happen this season as it looks set to be a three horse race to see who wins the coveted promotion place. For now, Europa Point and Mons Calpe are clear favourites but who knows, football is a funny old game!

Coach’s Dictionary (by Warren Muscat)

Ample times we listen, watch or read interviews with coaches and we wonder what language they speak. Like any other profession football coaching has it’s own dictionary and dialect. The following are some technical words used by coaches and their definitions. This part will focus on the physical aspects of the game including common injuries.

Aerobic & Anaerobic: The aerobic energy system, meaning 'with oxygen' which is used for long-term, steady paced exercise and day-to-day activities and Anaerobic energy system or 'without oxygen' which produces fast bursts of energy for short, powerful bursts.

Slow twitch and Fast Twitch: Skeletal muscles in turn can be divided intofast and slow twitch fibers. Muscles are predominantly powered by the oxidation of fats and carbohydrates, but anaerobic chemical reactions are also used, particularly by fast twitch fibers.

Vo2Max: The maximum or optimum rate at which the heart, lungs, and muscles can effectively use oxygen during exercise, used as a way of measuring a person's individual aerobic capacity.

Explosive Strength: By definition, Explosive Strength refers to the ability to exert strength or force as rapidly as possible in a given action (Siff). Explosive Strength is dependent on Rate of Force Development (RFD), which simply stated means the speed at which force can be produced.

Strength or Power: Strength is the maximal force that a muscle can exert as it contracts. Strength can be further divided into static (the muscles contract and hold one position), dynamic (the muscles move contracting and extending) and explosive strength or power (the muscle contraction happens at high speed).

Speed: Speed is a way of measuring how quickly something is moving or being done, or something moving fast.

Acceleration: Acceleration speed in sports such as team sports or tennis is crucial. These are sports where short sprints are done but maximum speed may not be reached. The ability to get into a space or take a gap are more important in team sports than maximum speed.

Page 21: Programme 18 April FC Brunos Magpies vs College 1975

21

Ligaments: A short band of tough, flexible fibrous connective tissue which connects two bones or cartilages or holds together a joint.

Tendons: A flexible but inelastic cord of strong fibrous collagen tissue attaching a muscle to a bone.

ACL - Definition of anterior cruciate ligament: A cruciate ligament of each knee that attaches the front of the tibia with the back of the femur and functions

especially to prevent hyperextension of the knee and is subject to injury especially by tearing —called also ACL.

Cartilage: firm, flexible connective tissue found in various forms in the larynx and respiratory tract, in structures such as the external ear, and in the articulating surfaces of joints. It is more widespread in the infant skeleton, being replaced by bone during growth.

Sprain or Tear: A sprain is a stretch or tear in a ligament (the bands of

fibrous tissue that connect our bones at the joints). A strain is also a stretch

or tear, this time affecting the muscle itself or a tendon (the tissue that connect

the muscles to the bones).

Groin injury: Medical Definition of groin pull: a usually sports-related injury characterized by intense pain in the region of the groin usually due to abnormal straining or stretching of an adductor muscle of the thigh and especially the adductor longus.

Hamstring injury: Straining of the hamstring, also known as a pulled hamstring, is defined as an excessive stretch or tear of muscle fibers and related tissues. Hamstring injuries are common in athletes participating in many sports and are very difficult to treat and rehabilitate.

Calf injury & Achilles Tendon: A calf strain is an injury to the muscle (or tendon of the muscle) of the lower leg. Strains or tears mean that muscle fibers are ripped as a result of overstretching. Strains are often called “pulled muscles”. In more severe cases the calf muscle(s) can rupture at the Achilles tendon.(Achilles Rupture).

Shin Splints: Acute pain in the shin and lower leg caused by prolonged

running, typically on hard surfaces.
