MANAGER’S NOTES

Last Thursday’s game against league leaders Leo was a breathtaking game of football and if we are to triumph against Phoenix much more of the same is needed. Phoenix are a very good side and it will take a monumental effort to beat them but I am quietly confident that if we perform like we did against Leo we can triumph.

This game will be different, our history with Phoenix was slightly tarnished in August in a friendly game pre-season. A massive melee occurred during the game in Castellar where we outplayed them and were winning 4-2. We have to be alert, play to our capabilities and hope the referee in charge of the game has strong character to control the game. We need to use any pent up aggression to control the game and not give concede unnecessary cards. We are relishing this opportunity and after speaking to the boys I can safely say that we are ready for a tough tough match tonight....! As usual, your support is hugely appreciated, keep it going if you can as the players are really responding to it.

Last week the draw was made for the first round of the Rock Cup 2015/16.

The Rock Cup is the “FA Cup” of Gibraltar. Round one only includes the second division sides. The six winners join the Gibraltar Premier League sides in the next round. The winners of the Rock Cup enter into the UEFA Europa League in 2016/17.

The UEFA Europa League evolved from the UEFA Cup, which itself was initially conceived by Switzerland's Ernst Thommen who, along with Italy's Ottorino Barrasi and England's Sir Stanley Rous, later FIFA President, had created a tournament for representative sides from European cities that regularly held trade fairs.

This forerunner to the UEFA Cup, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, was founded on 18 April 1955, two weeks after the founding of the European Champion Clubs' Cup. The first Fairs Cup involved teams from Barcelona, Basel, Birmingham, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Lausanne, Leipzig, London, Milan and Zagreb. The original tournament lasted three years, with matches timed to coincide with trade fairs. Barcelona, using players purely from FC Barcelona, beat a London representative side 8-2 on aggregate in the final.

For the second tournament the organisers reverted to club participation but the teams still had to come from cities staging trade fairs. Sixteen sides took part in the 1958–60 tournament, after which the competition was run on an annual basis. By 1962 the number of entrants had risen to 32; there are now over 100. In its early years, clubs from southern Europe dominated, notably Barcelona, who won it three times, and Valencia CF who prevailed twice. In 1968 Leeds United AFC became the first northern European outfit to lift the trophy, heralding a run of six successive victories by English teams.

The fifth of these was in 1971/72, by Tottenham Hotspur FC, and the first to be

known as the UEFA Cup. The change of name was recognition of the fact the competition was now organised by UEFA and no longer associated with the trade fairs. During the 1970s German, Dutch, Belgian and Swedish sides began to successfully compete with the English and between 1968 and 1984 only one team from the south – Juventus in 1977 – managed to disrupt the supremacy of the northern Europeans.

But following back-to-back triumphs by Real Madrid CF in the mid-1980s, Italian clubs took control in the 1990s. Starting with SSC Napoli's success in 1989, Italian sides landed the UEFA Cup eight times in eleven seasons, with FC Internazionale Milano winning it three times, before Galatasaray AŞ claimed it as Turkey's first European club prize in 2000. With the exception of 1964 and 1965, the final had, like the previous rounds, always been a two-legged, affair. The format changed permanently to a one-off final in 1998 when Inter beat SS Lazio 3-0 at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

From 1999/2000, domestic cup winners also qualified for the UEFA Cup after the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was disbanded. In addition, teams eliminated from the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League and the eight third-

placed finishers at the end of the latter tournament's group stage entered the competition. A group phase was introduced for the first time in 2004/05 involving 40 clubs playing four games apiece.

UEFA Europa League

Since 2009/10 the competition has been known as the UEFA Europa League, with the group stage expanded to 48 sides playing six matches on a home-and-

away format similar to the UEFA Champions League. Club Atlético de Madrid took two of the first three titles, sandwiching an FC Porto triumph, and that was followed by successes for Chelsea FC and Sevilla FC. From 2015 the winners gain entry to the following season's UEFA Champions League; Sevilla were the first to benefit with their record fourth coronation.

Leo vs Boca

The game both these teams were supposed to play in the league got suspended because Boca could not field a team. If Boca have their full squad ready and pumped up for this game we might be seeing a surprise result here although given the current form table Leo should have more than enough to book a place in the next round.

Phoenix vs Hound Dogs

An interesting match between two very different sides in Phoenix and Hound Dogs with Phoenix the favourites to progress. Phoenix are in good form in the domestic league and have the players to beat anyone on any given day although Hound Dogs will prove to be resilient as they always are.

FCB Magpies vs Cannons

Both these teams will harbour aspirations to progress to the next round although Magpies are clear favourites to make it through to the Second Round. Cannons have recently improved their squad with various new faces coming into the fray which gave them a much merited victory over Red Imps. Will we see an upset or will Magpies progress?

Europa Point vs Mons Calpe

Yet again both Second Division heavyweights meet in the first round of another cup competition (Second Division Cup) with the aspirations of one of these teams ending after the encounter. Europa Point managed a 5-2 v victory in the league although things could very well be different by Janaury with Mons Calpe seeking revenge.

Europa Pegasus vs College 1975

A very interesting battle between two of the basement clubs in the Second Division. Europa Pegasus played well against Olympique and showed tremendous character against Europa Point putting the title contenders under tremendous pressure. College 1975 also had a great first half against Magpies although they ultimately succumbed 4-1. A tricky one to call with both teams looking to progress

Olympique vs Red Imps

Both teams are in the midst of some horrible displays and results with Olympique losing their early momentum in the league and most likely looking like the perennial mid table team. Red Imps lost their last game against Cannons and could do with a good month leading into the Christmas break in order to alleviate the pressure on Manager Gary Lowe.

Welcome to all Chesterton guests tonight.

The match coincides with Chesterton’s annual Christmas client drinks at Brunos. We are therefore hoping that a few of our guests will make their debut at the Victoria Stadium tonight to watch our sponsored team FC Brunos Magpies.

Since our sponsorship began, the club has become the first to introduce a matchday programme, the first to introduce corporate hospitality, the first to include a match day mascot, and the first club in the second tier to have a set of fans wanting to watch a live game of football.

But we’re used to leading our industry...!

The season has gone well so far with just one defeat on the opening day. After last week’s emphatic win against the previously unbeaten league leaders Leo, we now turn our attention to the team currently in second place. 3 points tonight and we may have a promotion season on our hands.

It’s been a lot of fun supporting the team on the terraces, on the shirts and in social media. We appear to have made a bit of a stir and the reaction has been positive. Seems that no one ese had thought about why so few people watch local football live. The next development in the local league may be a fairer distribution of the UEFA money. Personally, I can’t see the advantage of one team winning the league every single year, it is neither exciting, nor beneficial for local talent to polarise the game so much around one team. Just look how much the Chelsea and Leicester stories are making the English Premier League so much more exciting this year. Vardy playing for Leicester has enhanced his international aspirations not hindered them.

Back to tonight, welcome again to those who have been before and a special welcome to those making their debuts. If you enjoy tonight, please come back on the 21st December. Our last game this year v Red Imps kicks off at 18.15.

Finally, please do support Chesterton‘s GBC Open Day efforts this year. Details on page 14.

Have a nice evening.

FC Brunos Magpies 5 v 1 LEO F.C

Magpies Destroy Leo To End Their Unbeaten Run

It was pre billed as the game of the round and it certainly didn’t disappoint with Magpies running out victorious in a 5-1 route.

The game was electrifying from start to finish with Magpies settling in quicker and scoring the opening goal inside the first 2 minutes after Harry Perry collected a ball outside of the Leo area and smashed it home from 25 yards. This first goal was a hammer blow for Leo who were never really at the races and soon after Ahmed Elsahib raced on to a defensive mistake by Leo to round the keeper and slot it home to make it 2-0.

The FCB Magpies fans were ecstatic and soon they had even more reason to celebrate as Ahmed Elsahib doubled his tally with a sweet volley from inside the area after a corner kick by Arif Hattabi. Magpies were leading 3-0 but had it not been for Fernando Sanchez Diaz they would have gone into the break leading 3-1. The Spanish Keeper produced two breath-taking saves to deny Leo clear cut chances.

The second half began with more of the same, Leo trying their utmost best to impose their way of football but Magpies were having none of it and where in inspired form. Leo did pull on back with 30 minutes still left of the game courtesy of a Dylan Hayes penalty after the big striker was barged in the back by Kyle Schembri inside the box.

The Magpies’ onslaught continued and the men in blue (for the day only) made it 4-1 after a wonderful volley from yet another corner. This time, big centre back Tom Hudson showed tremendous composure to pass the ball into the back of the net to give Magpies a clear three goal cushion.

MATCH REPORT

11

With time running out and the Leo players frustrated they were reduced to 10 men after a dangerous tackle by Jose Antonio Ferrer saw him receive a straight red. Lewis Constable who was on the bench for Magpies today also saw a red for voicing his frustration at the tackle. With time running out and the game in the bag for the “Maggies” a welcome back goal for Captain Devonte Totesaut saw Magpies win with aplomb and convincingly. Today’s result was most certainly one for the books as far as Magpies history is concerned.

Some interesting results in the Second Division this week including the anticipated clash between FCB Magpies & early season pace setters Leo FC. Our correspondents at Football Gibraltar review the weeks action:

The Second Division's first match this week saw Mons Calpe thrash Europa Pegasus 6-1 on Tuesday evening. Rafael Flores scored a 12 minute hat-trick for Mons, as his goals in the 24th, 32nd and 36th minute, as well as a goal from Salvador Ruiz Vallejo saw their team react quickly after Jesus Gallardo had given Pegasus a shock 17th minute lead. Thomas Lucena's 41st minute goal made it five before half-time, but despite the flurry of goals in the first half, only Scott Kelly scored in the second half, as his 71st minute effort confirmed the comprehensive victory.

Mons end the week fourth in the league, but only four points off the top, while Pegasus are second bottom with only four points now from nine games.

The second game that evening saw Gib Phoenix win 4-0 against Boca Juniors, thanks mainly to a Jonatan Benavente double. Benavente's goal just before half-time was a crucial moment for the team, who added three further second half goals through Ismael Tomilero in the 55th minute, Adam Sanchez Lobato's 79th minute effort and Benavente's brace five minutes before the end.

Boca remain third bottom with five points, while the win sees Gib Phoenix end the week in second, only two points off the top. This is because of the big result on Thursday night.

The biggest match of the week saw Brunos Magpies put on an eye-catching performance, winning 5-1 against previously unbeaten league leaders Leo FC. (Match report on page 10)

On Sunday, Olympique beat basement side College 1975 1-0 in the first game of the day, as Israel Castillo's late free kick ensured all three points. Olympique remain in sixth, but keep up the chase with the top teams.

The second game of the evening ended early as floodlight failure meant that Red Imps game vs Hound Dogs was abandoned with the Imps 2-0 up thanks to goals from Cesar Rosa, who also got sent off in the first half, and Dan Lane.

FIXTURES AND RESULTS

21

Last season’s ‘big boy killers’ will be hop-ing to pick up from where they left off to improve after finishing 4th last season and beating all the big teams in the second half of the season.

Phoenix have enjoyed a relatively good preseason and like most teams have been quiet this transfer window, President Brian Brosco confirmed to us that the team has been reshaped with many comings and goings, but they were very happy that they were able to keep hold of Fernando Cuesta who was so instrumental last season.
