MANAGER’S NOTES

We have had a good break from football and its almost 2 weeks since our last game vs Pegasus. We won and continued our great recent form which has placed us nicely in the promotion race. We take on Olympique in today's game, a tough game for sure with the opposition looking to beat us. We must not rest on our laurels and continue the hard work we have been putting in since minute 1 and give our all for the club and the fans supporting us. Training has been good, our preparation is complete for this game and may the best team come out on top.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT-.. WARREN MUSCAT

Full name: Warren Muscat

Age: 37

Place of birth: Malta

Position: Coach

What brought you to Gibraltar: Work

Best Magpies moment: Reserves Game vs St Josephs.

We are under pressure from the paparazzi to start a Magpies “WAGS” club. Could you / who would you contribute: I don't mind being the one behind the lens taking photos. Lot's of interesting things to comment about within the magpies ranks.

What’s top of your playlist at the moment: Was born a rocker and probably die like one... Pink Floyd, Metallica, Guns-n-Roses will always be at the top of my list.

Biggest influence on your football career: Jhonny Callejja who was the Head Coach of Hibernians Fc Malta when I started my coaching career.

Message for the fans: Definitely the best crowd in Gib football. You are not only an inspiration to the team but also to the administration and technical staff. You make things more excited and push us on the bench to perform better.

Good evening!

The Magpies season has turned out to be pretty similar to West Ham’s plight in the Premier League. Great start, wobble around Christmas, and looking like a strong finish which might just about end up with a cup success (next match Division 2 Cup semi / FA Cup quarter final) whilst in the league there remains a slight chance of a play off place for the Magpies and Champions League / Europa League for West Ham. (Had it not have been for that last minute dodgy penalty decision West Ham would be in 4th place at the time of writing this!)

It’s great to be supporting teams with something still to play for at this stage of the season.

Tonight’s game is hugely important and it’s against tough opposition who are only just behind us in the league. We’ve won the last 4 league games so we are on form, however, Olympique will be the strongest team we have faced recently.

Sunday evening games do not draw the largest crowds so it’s up to the rest of us to encourage the team from the stands with extra fervour!

Our next game after tonight is the semi-final of the Division 2 Cup v Gibraltar Phoenix on Thursday 31 March at 7pm. We will announce a Club Chesterton event nearer the date. If you are not on our mailing list for these events, please email [email protected] and ask to be added to “Magpie News”.

Behind the scenes, there’s a lot of planning being made for next season. If you want to be part of the journey in terms of sponsorship in any way via the programme, kit, social media, Magpie News etc, please let me know. Our communication and marketing activity is setting new standards in the football world in Gibraltar.

It’s pretty much the same story in estate agencyEE..!

Enjoy the game.

SAM'S MADRID MARATHON

My beautiful niece Casey was born with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) which was discovered when she was 5 weeks old. A VSD is a hole between the two ventricles in the heart which often causes problems with incorrect blood flow meaning that the flow to the lungs is too intense. A child with VSD can often become breathless and find feeding difficult as well as find it hard to gain weight as they expend a lot of extra energy breathing.

At 3 years old Casey had surgery at The Royal Brompton Hospital where she underwent a substantial operation to resolve the VSD. The Royal Brompton Hospital is the largest heart and lung specialist in the UK and one of the largest in Europe and is well-known for undertaking some of the most complex surgeries around the world.

I am raising money for The Brompton Fountain. They are a charity that support the children's unit of the hospital by providing vital resources and support services as well as funding pieces of medical equipment and improvements to the hospital facilities.

They do a huge amount of work to support families at very difficult times to which my family are very grateful.

One of the major technical changes since I joined the Magpies in January was to switch from a flexible back 3 defence to a more solid, easily played flat back 4, I wanted to share with our readers and supporters some general knowledge with regard to the role of the defenders.

In technical terms a defender is an outfield player whose primary role is to prevent the opposing team from scoring goals.

There are four types of defenders: center-back, sweeper, full-back, and wing-

back. The center-back and full-back positions are essential in most modern formations. The sweeper and wing-back roles are more specialized for certain formations.

A centre-back (also known as a central defender or center-half) defends in the area directly in front of the goal, and tries to prevent opposing players, particularly centre-forwards, from scoring. Centre-backs accomplish this by blocking shots, tackling, intercepting passes, contesting headers and marking forwards to discourage the opposing team from passing to them.

With the ball, centre-backs are generally expected to make short and simple passes to their teammates, or to kick un-aimed long balls down the field.

During normal play, centre-backs are unlikely to score goals. However, when their team takes a corner kick or other set piece centre-backs may move forward to the opponents' penalty area to make the utmost of their aerial capabilities. There are two main defensive strategies used by centre-backs: the zonal defence, where each centre-back covers a specific area of the pitch; and man-to-man marking, where each centre-back has the job of covering a particular opposition player.

When the central defenders work in pairs usually one of them is stronger in the air and the other one is better at anticipating and probably more technical and able to start the play.

The sweeper (or libero) is a more versatile centre-back who "sweeps up" the ball if an opponent manages to breach the defensive line. This position is rather

DEFENCE IS THE BEST FORM-..

Page 23: FC Brunos Magpies v FC Olympique 20 Mar 2016 football programme

23

more fluid than that of other defenders who man-mark their designated opponents. Because of this, it is sometimes referred to as libero. Which originated from the Italian name for this position libero da impegni di

marcatura (i.e. "free from man-marking tasks"). Though sweepers may be expected to build counter-attacking moves, and as such require better ball control and passing ability than typical center-backs, their talents are often confined to the defensive realm

The full-backs take up the holding wide positions and traditionally stayed in defence at all times, until a set-piece. Modern full-backs take a more attacking role, overlapping with wingers down the flank. There is one full-back on each side of the field except in defences with fewer than four players, where there may be no full-backs and instead only center-backs.

In the modern game, full-backs have taken on a more attacking role than is the case traditional. Winger less formations, such as the diamond 4–4–2 formation, demand the full-back to cover considerable ground up and down the flank.

Due to the physical and technical demands of their playing position, successful full-backs need a wide range of attributes, which make them suited for adaptation to other roles on the pitch. Many of the game's utility players, who can play in multiple positions on the pitch, are natural full-backs.

The wing-back is a modern variation on the full-back with heavier emphasis on attack. This type of defender focuses more heavily on attack than defense, yet they must have the ability, when needed, to fall back and mark opposing players to lessen the threat of conceding a goal-scoring opportunity. Some formations have wing back players that mainly focus on defending, and some that focus

more on attack.

In the evolution of the modern game, wing-backs are the combination of wingers and full-backs. As such, it is one of the most physically demanding positions in modern football. Wing-backs are often more adventurous than full-backs and are expected to provide width, especially in teams without wingers. A wing-back needs to be of exceptional stamina, be able to provide crosses up field and defend effectively against opponents' attacks down the flanks. A defensive midfielder is usually fielded to cover the advances of wing-backs.

It can also be occupied by wingers and side midfielders in a 3-centre-back formation.

By Warren Muscat.
