MANAGER’S NOTES

After a great semi-final win versus Phoenix we

now turn our attention to the league once more.

Tonight’s match is a pivotal game for us. We

need to beat Mons Calpe to have a sniff at

making it into the playoffs; anything else would

not do. A game like this is one where we need

the crowd to really really get behind us like they

usually. We need to hear your chants, hear you

screaming for us! We will give it our all and

hopefully this will be good enough.

Evening all

These are my first programme notes since our glorious 5-0 win v Phoenix to reach the final of the Division 2 Cup. It was an immense effort by the team and the supporters on that most enjoyable of Thursday evenings. Since then, the highlights have been watched some 1,700 times across our Facebook and Youtube channels.

The power of the cub’s marketing effort across social media, this programme (unique in Gibraltar), and Magpie News together with the status of attracting the highest attendances at league games across both divisions, save for possibly Lincoln and Europa in the premier league, gives the club huge potential to attract additional sponsors for 2016-17. If you or your company want to be involved in some manner, please let me know. Chesterton will remain as a key sponsor. Details of the packages available will be released soon and will start at £500. It must be stated that all money raised will go to improve the team. There is no profitable intent.

For the final we are working on a VIP event before the game and at half-time. Numbers will be limited. Stay close to the club’s email ‘Magpie News’ to ensure you receive the details. Details will be released in a few days.

Turning to tonight, just look at the table on page 14. Europa Point drew 0-0 with Phoenix last night which proves anything can happen. If we win this evening, we stay in contention for a promotion place. Anything less than a win, I think we have to concede that third place will be the best we can achieve. Still not bad for a club in its third year of existence and without any UEFA funds.

Building a club takes time. I think we have got off to a very good start.

#beamagpie

Enjoy the game.

Nana Fiifi Marfo brace sets up a final versus Europa Point

Brunos Magpies booked a lucrative Second Division Cup final against Europa Point with a convincing 5-0 win over Gib Phoenix.

Magpies took a shock lead in the 21th minute, Nana Fiifi Asare Marfo picked up a loose ball and rifled a shot past Jose Antonio Correro from twenty five yards out. Phoenix nearly equalised instantly, Raul Rocha’s through ball from Adrian Torres who smashed his shot wide from close range.

Three minutes before half-time Magpies doubled their lead, Nick Dembele whipped in a cross which found Marfo who headed his effort onto the post and Max Bothen was on hold to follow in the rebound. Magpies went into the break leading 2-0.

Phoenix started the second half the stronger side and had a chance to pull a goal back but Jonatan Benavente’s long range effort was comfortably saved by Fernando Sanchez. Phoenix had another chance in the 75th minute when Luis Cortes’ corner hit the post.

Two minutes later Magpies made it 3-0, Nick Dembele dispossessed Jose Dominguez and drifted past Jonathan Field and with only the keeper to beat, slotted his effort into the bottom corner. Three minutes later Magpies made it 4-

0, Harry Perry cut inside the box and squared the ball for Asier Calla Garcia to tap into an empty net.

Just before the final whistle Magpies made it 5-0, Sam Whelan whipped in a cross which found Nana Fiifi Asare Marfo who smashed his effort past Correro. The referee finally brought an end to the game and Magpies secured a comfortable win.

Europa Point, who beat Cannons 10-0 yesterday, will now face Brunos Magpies in the Second Division Cup final.

SAM'S MADRID MARATHON

My beautiful niece Casey was born with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) which was discovered when she was 5 weeks old. A VSD is a hole between the two ventricles in the heart which often causes problems with incorrect blood flow meaning that the flow to the lungs is too intense. A child with VSD can often become breathless and find feeding difficult as well as find it hard to gain weight as they expend a lot of extra energy breathing.

At 3 years old Casey had surgery at The Royal Brompton Hospital where she underwent a substantial operation to resolve the VSD. The Royal Brompton Hospital is the largest heart and lung specialist in the UK and one of the largest in Europe and is well-known for undertaking some of the most complex surgeries around the world.

I am raising money for The Brompton Fountain. They are a charity that support the children's unit of the hospital by providing vital resources and support services as well as funding pieces of medical equipment and improvements to the hospital facilities.

They do a huge amount of work to support families at very difficult times to which my family are very grateful.

THE MANAGER’S CHECKBOARD

As a manager the most difficult choice you face is what type of formation you will be putting on the pitch. There are different thoughts about this. Every manager tackles it in a different way according to his philosophy.

You will find coaches that work on one formation in pre-season and unless there are inevitable circumstances they stick to it no matter what. Other coaches change their formation and tactics depending on their opponents. Some managers believe in a formation and they bring in players suitable to play the formation they want and other managers create the formation according to the potential of the players they have at hand.

Then there are managers who prefer attacking formations, others who prefer defensive ones or counter attack formations. Some managers tend to like formations which promote the physical aspect of the game and others who promote the technical abilities of their players.

Below you will find some basic formations which are used by managers nowadays.

4-4-2 formation (4-4-1-1 / 4-1-2-1-2)

4-4-2 is the most basic of modern football formations. It is composed of four defenders, four midfielders, and two forwards. In the 4-4-2 formation, one of the two forwards often plays outside the penalty box to bridge the midfield and frontline. This gives the team the appearance of playing a 4-4-1-1 formation.

The advantage of this formation is having an extra player that can help the striker attack without having to wait for midfield support. Another advantage of the 4-4-2 formation is width: the two side midfielders and two fullbacks allow a team to cover

the space on the sides in defence and utilize it in offense.

A team can split the function of the two central midfielders: one can be assigned a deep role in defence while the other can be placed further up to push the ball in offense. This creates a diamond-shaped midfield and turns 4-4-2 into a 4-

1-2-1-2 formation.

4-3-3 sounds like a very offensive formation and 4-1-4-1, 4-5-1 a very defensive one but, amusingly, both formations are basically the same. Both play with four defenders, three central midfielders, two wingers, and one striker. However, in 4-3-3 the wingers are considered as forwards while in 4-5-

1 they are considered more as midfielders.

21

In the 4-3-3, the central midfielder in the middle is primarily assigned on defence and is positioned just in front of the back four. The other two midfielders play an all-around role: they participate in defence as well as in offense.

Wingers in the 4-3-3 and 4-5-1 have the following responsibilities: they bring the ball up to the striker, provide him crosses, or cut inside the penalty area to support the striker. When their team loses the ball, it is their task to mark the opposing fullbacks.

In this type of formation, the striker is typically good at playing with his back to the goal: he can control passes and distribute the ball to teammates or make pivot shots. Because the striker is expected to receive many crosses, teams who play 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 often field a tall striker who has a great heading ability.

A 4-1-4-1 can be described either as a variant of a 4-2-2 or 4-5-1. Basically in a 4-1-4-1 formation there is a DM assigned to shield the defenders. 4-1-4-1 is known as a defensive formation with the tendency to have fast counter attacks.

5-3-2 and 3-5-2 are two football formations that are the same. Their only difference is how the two players on each flank are seen. In the 5-3-2, these players are considered as fullbacks while in 3-5-2 they are considered more as wingers. In practice, 3-5-2 is simply 5-3-2 in an offensive mode.

In the 5-3-2, there are five defenders, three central midfielders, and two forwards. One central defender may drop back to play as sweeper to convert the 5-3-2 to a 1-

4-3-2 formation.

The key players in the 5-3-2 formation are the fullbacks: their primary tasks are to defend the flanks but they also give width to a team’s offense by providing support from the sides. Since those players have to work the whole length of the pitch, they are typically versatile players with high stamina.

Of the three midfielders in the 5-3-2, one is positioned in front of the defence to perform defensive tasks. The two other midfielders play a more offensive role even if they also participate in the team’s defence. Usually, one forward plays as a striker while the other plays a supporting role.

4-3-2-1 formation (the “Christmas tree”). The 4-3-2-1 is a narrow football formation played with four defenders, three central midfielders, two attacking midfielders, and one striker. Because of its pointed shape on the blackboard, 4-3-2-1 is dubbed the “Christmas tree” formation. Cont<.

THE MANAGER’S CHECKBOARD

22

Defence in the 4-3-2-1 is the same with other flat back four formations, except that the defence on the flanks is left solely to the fullbacks. Like in the 5-3-2 and 4-3-3, one player on central midfield is assigned a defensive role while the other two are more offense-oriented.

Unlike the 4-5-1, the two attacking midfielders focus more on the middle instead of the wings. However, a coach can give more width to its offense by letting the fullbacks work the whole length of the pitch.

The 4-2-3-1 is a football formation made up of four defenders, two central midfielders, three advanced midfielders (one playmaker, two wingers), and a striker. When people consider the wingers in the 4-2-3-1 as forwards, this formation is listed as 4-2-1-3. However, 4-2-3-1 and 4-2-1-3 are essentially the same.

The two central midfielders in this formation are primarily defensive and so they are often called “holding midfielders”. Ahead of them are the wingers, who

usually work very near the touchline to spread out opposition defence and provide crosses to the striker.

The playmaker is the key player in this formation, being the one who controls the team’s offense. He is typically the most skilful, creative, and tactically aware player of a team. Usually, he is not assigned to a fixed position and is free to play on any part of the football field.

This formation has the big advantage of having both a playmaker, who coordinates the attack, and wingers, who give width to the offense.

The 4-2-3-1 formation was the basic formation of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. It was used by more than half of the 32 teams in that tournament and was the formation of three of the four semi-finalists: Germany, Spain, and Netherlands.

THE MANAGER’S CHECKBOARD

23

Football in Gibraltar is a popular sport. Football has a strong tradition in Gibraltar, having first been introduced by British military personnel in the 19th century. In 1895 the Gibraltar Football Association was founded, making it one of the ten oldest active football associations in the world.

Football was introduced to the civilian population of Gibraltar by the British Armed Forces in the late 19th century. It is not known exactly when the first civilian football teams were formed, but the earliest records mention that the Prince of Wales F.C. already existed in 1892, and the

Gibraltar F.C. was formed in November 1893.

Between 1895 and 1907, the only known football competition organised by the Gibraltar Civilian Football Association was the Merchants Cup. The cup was donated each year by the Merchants of Gibraltar. The first ever Cup Final was between the Gibraltar F.C. and the Jubilee F.C. and was witnessed by 1,500 spectators. In 1902, the military authorities in Gibraltar designated one of their four football grounds at North Front as a civilian ground. Before this there was no civilian football grounds in Gibraltar, so the only way the Gibraltar Civilian Football Association could practice outside the annual Merchants Cup was by playing friendly matches against the military teams whenever possible.

Gibraltar Football League

The Gibraltar Football League was set up in October 1907. The military had well established league and cup competitions before this, but local civil teams were not allowed to compete in them. The first league competition saw eight teams competing, with Prince of Wales F.C. being the winner. The growing success of the league and cup competitions was reflected in the increasing number of new teams that were registering with the association. Such was the increase in participating teams that a Second Division was added in 1909, and in 1910 the association was organising separate leagues and cup competitions for senior and junior divisions. This continuously growing interest in football in Gibraltar was also reflected in the association's affiliation with The Football Association in 1909.

Years later, the Gibraltar Civilian Football Association changed its name to the Gibraltar Football Association; it has continued to organise league competitions and promote the sport within The Rock to this day.

Golden Era

The period between 1949 to 1955 is regarded as the "Golden era" for football in Gibraltar. It was during this time that world-renowned teams such as Real Madrid C.F., Atlético Madrid, Real Valladolid and Admira Wacker among many others were arriving on The Rock to play against the national team who acquitted themselves admirably against professionals despite being amateurs.
