ABOUT ENCOMPASSEncompass Trust was set up by the family of Daniel Braden, one of 202 people killed in the terrorist bombings of a nightclub in Bali, Indonesia, in October 2002.

Daniel’s family concluded that, as long as one group of people is able to dehumanise the faith or culture of another, events like the one that killed Daniel would continue to happen. They were determined for some good to come of this tragedy, and so they founded Encompass.

Since 2003 when it was founded, Encompass has broughttogether over 1200 young people from different cultures and backgrounds across the world, giving them the opportunity that the Bali bombers never had, to build trust and form friendships across boundaries and to really understand one another.

WHAT?

WorkshopsWorkshops give you the chance to explore themes around identity, community, conflict and stereotypes, and will include small and large group work, games, facilitated discussions, music and drama. Please come prepared to have honest, and in some cases, difficult discussions. Some of the issues we will be discussing are sensitive, so be respectful, listen carefully, and speak honestly– even when you disagree with each other (as will often be the case).

Adventure activitiesOutdoor activities are designed to bring the group together, to work as a team and build trust between individuals. The activities you do will depend on the weather, but may include rock climbing, abseiling, mountain walking, ghyll scrambling, raft building, and mine exploration.

The aims of the programme are to:• Support young people from different backgrounds and cultures to understand each other better• Give young people the skills and confidence to promote intercultural understanding in their own communities

Using your experienceDuring the programme, you will receive facilitation training and run your own workshop for the other participants. We will then spend 2 days together in London, taking advantage of the multiculturalism of the city, facilitating workshops for young people and hearing from different speakers including faith leaders and campaigners. This will give you the skills and confidence to use your Encompass experience to benefit your own community after the programme.

JOSH CASSFacilitatorJosh’s role is to support Lucy and Sahdia, and Josh will be facilitating some of the workshops and discussions.

We’ll meet at Heathrow Airport on the afternoon of Sunday 9th February.

From there, we’ll travel together by coach to Derwentwater Youth Hostel in the Lake District, stopping off for a light dinner on the way. The coach journey will take 6 or 7 hours.

On Monday morning, we will walk together to the Encompass offices at Faraday House for the Showcase Ceremony, where you will present your action plans and be presented with your certificates. After a light lunch at 1.30pm, you will have the opportunity to explore London for the rest of the day.

We return to London by coach on Sunday 16th February, and will stay the night at a youth hostel in central London (Holborn).

Flights home for international participants will be on Wednesday 19th February. You will have the choice to have your return flight booked for Sunday 23rd February, but after Wednesday, your stay in London (food, travel, accommodation) will be at your own expense.

ABOUT THE CENTREWe will be staying at Derwentwater Youth Hostel, in the Lake District. The centre is located on the shores of Derwentwater Lake and is very beautiful and peaceful. But be aware – it will be very cold in February!

SleepingYou will be sharing a room with up to 8 other participants. All bedding (sheets, blankets, pillows) will be provided.

Males and females will be sleeping in separate parts of the building.

FoodThe day will start with a cooked English breakfast. For lunch there will be sandwiches, which will be packed up on the days that you will be outside over lunchtime. Evening meals are home-cooked and there will be 2 or more choices, one of which will be a vegetarian option.

Special dietary requirements, including religious diets (e.g. Kosher, Halal) and allergies can all be catered for, but you must inform Encompass before the start of the programme

There are no shops within walking distance of the centre, but you will be able to buy some snacks, drinks and souvenirs at the centre if you wish.

Free time:During the week you will have some free time to relax. The centre has table tennis which is free to use. Table football and pool are £1 a turn so bring lots of coins if you would like to use these facilities! Please do not leave the centre, though you are free to use the centre’s extensive and beautiful grounds, which even include a waterfall!

There is limited mobile phone signal at the centre. Please do not use your mobile phone during activities or workshops.

LONDONWe will leave the Lake District on Sunday afternoon, arriving in London late on Sunday evening. Please do not leave the hostel on Sunday night – there will be time to explore London on the following day.

We will be staying at Astor Museum Hostel in Central London, 2 minutes’ walk from the Encompass offices at Faraday House, and in front of the iconic British Museum (we recommend a visit – it’s free!).

Museum Inn Hostel27 Montague StreetLondon WC1B 5BHUKwww.astorhostels.co.uk/our-hostels/museum/+44 (0) 7580 5360

The group will all stay together at the hostel on Sunday 16th February. After that, the Indonesian participants will relocate to the Indonesian embassy guesthouse in Willesden Green. American participants already live in London, so unfortunately we are not able to provide accommodation for you. All other participants, including British participants who choose to participate in the 2 extra days, will stay at the hostel, along with Encompass staff members, Lucy and Sahdia.

FoodA light breakfast (cereal and toast) is provided by the hostel. Encompass will provide ingredients should you wish to prepare your own lunches and dinners at the hostel (there is a large self-catering kitchen). However, you may be keen to try out London’s restaurants and cafes. Almost every cuisine in the world can be found in London, so if you are missing your favourite food from back home, this is the place to be! Please note that if you choose to eat away from the hostel, it will be at your own expense.

TravelEncompass will pay for your travel to events that are not within walking distance from the hostel. Unfortunately we cannot cover the cost of sightseeing trips – however, many of London’s attractions are walkable. (Oxford Street is a 10 minute walk, Covent Garden 12 minutes, Trafalgar Square 18 minutes, Buckingham Palace 30 minutes and the Houses of Parliament 30 minutes.) Walking around London is interesting, healthy and best of all FREE – although not so fun when it’s raining, so pack an umbrella!

For those who prefer to travel by public transport, the nearest underground station is Holborn, on the Piccadilly and Central lines.

We do not recommend taking taxis in London as they are extremely expensive! Instead, buy an Oyster Card for £5, which you can top up with money for use on London trains, buses and tubes. If you are staying in London for the whole week, it might be worth buying a week travel card – either way, having an Oyster Card will save you money and at the end of your stay, you can return it to a station to have your £5 back.

Flights homeWe will book taxis to the airport for participants who are travelling back on Wednesday 19th February. Those who wish to remain in London after that are asked to travel to the airport at their own expense.

Interfaith PanelThe Interfaith Panel is being organised by the UK Steering Group; a group of previous participants who are involved in the running of Encompass. They are inviting experts from different faith traditions to debate a topic such as “can violence ever be justified by faith?”

LONDON ACTIVITIESMost of the events will take place at Faraday House, 48-51 Old Gloucester Street, London WC1N 3AE.

Aik SaathAik Saath (one of our partner organisations) is a conflict resolution charity based in Slough. We are going to attend their meeting and deliver a work-shop for the young people there. This is your opportunity to put into practice the facilitation skills you have learnt on the programme, building your confidence for your return to your community.

Skills WorkshopAt the time of writing, Wednesday morning’s Skills Workshop is to be confirmed.

Intercultural LunchEncompass will give each national group a budget of £20 to buy/prepare a dish to share with the rest of the group. The dish you choose should mean something to you – either a national dish, a traditional meal eaten at a special occasion, or a meal that you eat with your family.

We will plan our session together at Faraday House after the Interfaith Panel. Then we will travel together to Paddington and catch a train to Slough from there. After the session is finished, we will catch the 19.13 train from Slough back to Paddington, and arrive in Paddington at 7.33pm. You are then free for the rest of the evening!

As each national group serves their dish, they will share their story. This will be a final celebration of the programme and a chance to say good-bye to each other.

Photo projectWrite 3 paragraphs about your community:1. Describe your community as if to someone who knows nothing about it, with the aim of helping them to understand it2. Describe something you like about your community3. Describe something you would like to change about your community, and how you think the Encompass programme will help you achieve this.

Then find or take 3 photographs that represent these things.

These should be your own photos (or a friend or family member’s); please do not include any Googled images.

Your Encompass Coordinator will tell you how and when to submit your photo project.

The photos on this page are all photos that have been submitted by previous participants.

PREPARATIONIntercultural presentationsOn the programme, each national group will be asked to present something that represents their culture. Some examples are:•A traditional dance•A song•A drama or sketch•Something to eat or drink (there is a small kitchen at the centre)But you can do anything you like!

You should plan this together with the other participants from your national group before the programme, and bring onto the programme anything you might need.

Please note that there is no power point projector at Derwentwater Youth Hostel, so unfortunately your presentation cannot include power point.

AFTER THE PROGRAMME REMEMBER: IT WILL BE COLD!!! Bring lots of warm clothes!

Cotton layers next to the skin will not keep you warm if they get damp. Instead we recommend a nylon top (e.g. football shirt) or microfibre thermal layer, and a fleece on top.

Do not wear jeans for activities as they can cause problems when they get wet. Tracksuit bottoms are a good alternative.

Glaramara will provide:- Walking boots- Waterproof jacket- Waterproof trousers- Rucksack- Water bottle- Headtorch- Helmet- Wellies (rubber boots)You don’t need to bring any of this yourself.

Please note: We cannot insure personal belongings (watches, jewellery, iPods, mobile phones, laptops etc.) so you are advised to leave them at home. If you choose to bring these, it will be at your own risk.

USING YOUR EXPERIENCE

Sadly not everyone has the opportunity to take part in the international programme. As one of the lucky ones, it is your responsibility to share what you have learnt with your community back home.

Previous participants have:•Run a workshop in their university, school, youth centre, church, mosque or synagogue•Volunteered for a local peace-building or community organisation•Created a short film about an issue relating to Encompass•Started a campaign•Organised an event to bring different people together•Organised a fundraiser for the work of Encompass or another charity

Your Encompass Coordinator will support you to use your experience, through regular meetings, training and development opportunities.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWhat will the weather be like?Although the weather in the UK can be unpredictable, February in the Lake District is likely to be cold, rainy, and there may even be snow. This may be a bit of a shock (especially if you come from a warmer country) but with the right clothing you’ll be fine.

How can my family contact me during the programme? In case of an emergency, your family can call the centre on +44 (0) 17687 77246.

As there is no internet access and limited mobile phone signal at the centre, please let your family know that you may not be able to contact them regularly while on the programme.

I need somewhere to pray/I am observing a religious festivalNo problem! We will make every effort to accommodate this, but please let an Encompass member of staff know at the start of the programme.

Can I drink alcohol on the programme? No. Alcohol, shisha, and illegal drugs are strictly prohibited at all times during the international programme. Anyone found with alcohol, shisha or drugs will be sent home at their own cost.

Can I smoke on the programme?Health and fitness are very important to Derwentwater, so smoking cigarettes is actively discouraged. However, if you must smoke then there are designated smoking areas at the centre. No smoking is allowed during the outdoor activities or the workshops.

What if I have an accident or an emergency? If you suffer any type of accident or emergency situation at any time during the programme, or witness someone else having an accident or emergency, please inform a member of Encompass, Derwentwater and/or Glaramara staff immediately, no matter what time of day it is.

Will there be time to work on university or school assign-ments?No. Although free time is scheduled into the programme, this will be limited, and you will almost certainly want to spend it relaxing with your new friends. We recommend that you do not take any work with you.

Can this count towards my Duke of Edinburgh Award? For British participants, the Journey of Understanding can count as the Residential section of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, as long as no one you know is also on the programme. Just bring along your Residential Assessor Card and give it to either Lucy or Sahdia at the start of the programme.

There will also be the opportunity to gain AQA awards after the programme, and any volunteering you do after the programme to spread the Encompass message can of course count towards the Volunteering section of your Duke of Edinburgh Award.
