Welcome to ISBS 2009
It is our very great pleasure, on behalf of the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports and the University of Limerick, to welcome all delegates to the 27th International Conference of Biomechanics in Sports 2009, at the University of Limerick, Ireland.
In planning this conference, we have been cognisant of the ISBS mission to bridge the gap between scientists and practitioners and it has been our aim to reflect this mission throughout the programme of ISBS 2009. The pursuit of sports biomechanics is a relative new discipline in Ireland and the University of Limerick has been a leading institution in Ireland in promoting the discipline in the last 15 years. It is our hope that the ISBS 2009 conference in Limerick will be remembered by all delegates for the quality of its scientific and social programme and it will leave an important legacy amongst academics and practitioners in Ireland.
We believe the Applied Programme will be a major highlight of the ISBS 2009 Conference. This programme includes a full one‐day symposium on the biomechanics of swimming with over 20 presentations and practical workshops and will make use of the world class training facilities at the University. It will be chaired by Ross Sanders and organised with the cooperation of Swim Ireland. Other applied sessions are provided in the Biomechanics of Coaching, chaired by Duane Knudson; Rowing Biomechanics chaired by Richard Smith; Biomechanics of Strength Training, chaired by Randall Jensen; and a session on data analysis techniques, chaired by Joseph Hamill (our Adjunct Professor at the University of Limerick). It is our expectation that these sessions will be attended by specialist practitioner/coaches as well as academic scholars and researchers. We encourage all delegates to embrace the mission of the society to engage with the coaches and work to bridge the gap between academics and practitioners.
The Geoffrey Dyson Award is always a major highlight of ISBS conferences and we look forward to Albert Gollhofer’s Geoffrey Dyson Award presentation on The Role of Proprioceptive Feedback in Balance and Reactive Movement. We are privileged to host the ISBS David Waddell Memorial Keynote lecture on racquet sports which will be presented by Bruce Elliott (Australia). The programme also includes keynotes by David Kerwin (UK), Claire Milner (USA), Adamantios Arampatzis (Germany), Young‐Hoo Kwon (USA) and Cassie Wilson (UK).
The scientific programme is completed by over 110 thematic oral presentations and over 180 posters covering a full range of relevant themes in sports biomechanics.
In addition to the scientific and applied sessions we are pleased to provide a full commercial exhibition of equipment, software and literature related to the sports biomechanics.
While the main focus of our conference is on sports biomechanics we have done all we can to ensure that delegates will have ample opportunities to enjoy the varied social and cultural aspects of Ireland. The full social programme will include excursions to the majestic Cliffs of Moher and the unique limestone Burren area of West Clare and the evening programmes will provide opportunities to appreciate the traditional music and dance of Ireland.
As hosts of ISBS 2009 we will do our utmost to ensure ISBS 2009 is an excellent scientific, social and cultural experience for all participants. We hope you will find your stay in Ireland to be a memorable and rewarding experience and that you will wish to return again in the years ahead.

Day Tour Thursday 22nd August – 11:15 – 19:00
Please remember your ticket when attending the day tour; these were distributed with your conference pack during registration. The day tour departs from outside the main conference venue at 1115; please ensure you grab a snack prior to boarding (available in the exhibition hall).
Lunch will be served at approximately 1300 and the buses will return to the university at approximately 1900. A half‐day tour of the west coast of Ireland is planned for the Thursday of the conference. The tour will take the delegates to the majestic Cliffs of Moher and to the magical Burren to experience the best Ireland has to offer the eager visitor. The Cliffs of Moher (Irish: Aillte an Mhothair) are one of Ireland's top Visitor attractions, drawing almost one million visitors in 2006. The Cliffs are 214m high at the highest point and range for 8 kilometres over the Atlantic Ocean on the western seaboard of County Clare. O'Brien's Tower stands proudly on a headland of the majestic Cliffs. The cliffs boast one of Ireland's most spectacular views; from the Cliffs one can see the Aran Islands, Galway Bay, as well as The Twelve Pins, the Maum Turk Mountains in Connemara and Loop Head to the South. The views are wonderful but it can get very windy on top of these cliffs! In keeping with this carefully‐balanced approach, the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience is built into a hillside approaching the Cliffs, blending naturally with the surrounding countryside. The centre is also environmentally sensitive in its use of renewable energy systems including geothermal heating and cooling, solar panels, and greywater recycling. Officially opened in February 2007 having been meticulously planned and built over a 17 year period, the €32m facility features an informative array of interactive media, exploring topics such as the origin of the Cliffs in local and global geological contexts, the bird and fish life in the area, and many more.
The Burren (from Irish: Boireann, meaning great rock) is a limestone plateau occupying an area of over one hundred square miles in North Clare. It is an area of scenic attractions where the clear light, reflected from the stone‐grey hills, seems to radiate an air of timelessness, which is made more realistic by the presence of the many prehistoric remains that dot the fields and the valleys beneath. Here the unfolding layers of limestone form terraces on the slopes of the hills ‐ a limestone desert but with a quick‐changing landscape. The Burren is rich with historical and archaeological sites. There are many megalithic tombs in the area, portal dolmens, a Celtic high cross in the village of Kilfenora, and a number of ring forts, among them the triple ring fort Cahercommaun on the edge of an inland cliff, and the exceptionally well‐preserved Caherconnell Stone Fort. In the heart of the Burren, lies one of the oldest caves in Ireland. This cave was formed by the glacial melt waters of an early ice age. The erosive power of the waters carved out a subterranean river deep underneath Aillwee Mountain. This river has subsided since the last ice age, leaving behind one of Ireland's most stunning caves. The cave was discovered by Jack McGann, a local herdsman, in 1940. The rock pile from the passageway between the Cascade and Midsummer's Cavern was excavated in 1977, revealing a further 350 meters of cave. This was opened to the public after continuing the lighting and path system. In 1991, it was decided to join the final stop on the tour, the highway to the entrance of the cave via an alternate route to create a circular tour.

Thatched cottages line its broad street, punctuated with beautiful stone buildings and picturesque ruins. The Adare Heritage Centre, located in the centre of the town, allows visitors to experience this area’s unique history, spanning the years from 1233 to the present day. The story is told through realistic model enactments and audio visuals in French, Italian, German, Irish and English. Killarney is a town in County Kerry, southwestern Ireland. The town is located on the northeastern shore of the Lough Lein/Leane which are part of Killarney National Park. The town and its surrounding region is home to St. Mary's Cathedral, Ross Castle, Muckross Abbey, Torc Waterfall and Gap of Dunloe. Killarney was awarded the "Best Kept Town" award for 2007 in a cross‐border competition. Owing to its natural heritage, history and proximity to the Dingle Peninsula, Skellig Michael island and its location on the Ring of Kerry, Killarney is a popular tourist destination.
Wednesday 19th August – Limerick City Walking Tour Celebrated in song as a Lady, the city of Limerick has matured with sophistication and grace. Limerick, with a charter older than London, has retained much of it's historical past in attractions. It is intended that the walking tour will involve a visit to the following:
• King John’s Castle. The Castle was built c. 1210 and is one of the finest examples of fortified Norman architecture in Ireland.
• St. John’s Cathedral. Built in 1861 by the architect Philip Charles Hardwick, this cathedral has been in continuous use since. The cathedral is the tallest structure in Ireland and has the tallest spire in Ireland at 94m.

General Information Climate Ireland has a temperate climate, resulting in relatively cool summers. The mean daily temperature in August is 15 ‐ 20°C. It is generally quite dry in August but it is possible to experience many climate changes in one day. Rain can occur at any time, so come prepared! Electricity Supply Ireland works off a flat three‐pin plug system. Electrical current is 220‐240 volts, 50 cycles alternating current (AC). You are advised to purchase the appropriate adapters in advance. These are available at most airports. Credit Cards Credit cards are widely used in Ireland and all leading credit cards are accepted. Please consult your own bank. Clothing Ireland is generally informal about clothes. In the more expensive hotels and restaurants most people dress formally for dinner and a jacket and tie might be required. Warm sweaters, comfortable walking shoes and rainwear are advisable throughout the year. Shopping Shops are generally open Monday to Saturday from 09.00am to 6.00pm with late night shopping until 8.00 or 9.00pm at many of the larger stores. On Sunday, many supermarkets and some of the bigger shops will open from midday until 6.00pm.
