SUCCESS STORIES UNITED WAY’S ® SNAPSHOT PROGRESS REPORT 2014-15 MOVING FORWARD In response to this analysis United Way will: • Lead the Attendance Matters ® initiative with the participation of nearly 11,500 students and 16 middle schools across seven school districts. • Collaborate with school districts to launch a pilot project focusing on chronically absent students. • Continue to mentor other communities who are using the Attendance Matters ® model. Good habits are forming! A mom from Robert Olds Junior High School in Connell reported that when her son had to have minor surgery he insisted that they schedule it over spring break. He told his doctor, “Attendance matters and I don’t want to miss any school. I have perfect attendance and we can do the surgery, but it has to be over break.” Both the doctor and the student’s parents were surprised and realized that the initiative has definitely had a positive influence on our kids. Student leaders are making a difference! Several schools have leadership classes heading the Attendance Matters ® efforts. These students brainstorm on ideas for incentives and help distribute quarter and semester attendance awards. Support is expanding beyond the classroom! Many school partners are focusing on chronic absenteeism by addressing barriers for getting kids to school and expanding support to families. Attendance Matters ® was one of nine finalists, out of 150, awarded at an International United Way Conference. The initiative was recognized for fostering meaningful change in our community. After the second year of Attendance Matters ® , student attendance data for the Kennewick, Richland, and Pasco School Districts showed the following: Students miss more days as they progress through school - 6 th graders missed an average of 10 days; 8 th graders missed and average of 12.5 days. Chronic absenteeism is still our greatest challenge - Students who missed more than 10 days increased from 34% to 45%. Ethnicity influences absences and grades - The lowest number of absences and highest grades are achieved by Asian and Caucasian students. The highest absences and lowest grades are experienced by Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, Native American and Hispanic students. Students from low income families miss more school - This is consistent across nearly all ethnic groups. The number of students with PERFECT ATTENDANCE increased from 304 to 366. unitedway-bfco.com printing courtesy of
