Stakeholder Meetings and Consultations

One of the key strategies to increase the usage and popularity of Safetipin is to forge

partnerships with key stakeholders and engage them in the process and findings from the

audits and information from Safetipin. We believe that the engagement of service providers

will be an impetus to getting more people to sue the app and share information. The

process of working with stakeholders is often a long process which requires several

meetings and discussions. Several meetings have been held and one stakeholder

consultation in Gurgaon on January 29th 2014.

Meetings

1. Public Works Department, Delhi

A meeting was convened by Mr. Arun Barooka, Secretary PWD, with key personnel from the

PWD including engineers to discuss the use of a tool like Safetipin. They requested Safetipin

to do a pilot set of audits in one area and share the findings with them. Audits were done in

the Lodi road area and findings have been shared.

2. Delhi Police, South-west District

A series of meetings have been held with the DCP South west district and key SHO's of the

Dwarka to plan a series of safety audits that were conducted in Dwarka in early January

2014. Following the audits in ten areas, the police have launched an initiative "Salamat" in

partnership with Safetipin. A local stakeholder meeting with the police, DDA, resident

associations, and local residents was held on January 12, 2014. The event was well

attended by almost 100 people who were exposed to the use of Safetipin and they shared

their safety concerns in the area. As a follow up, the maps and findings of safety audits have

been shared. (Attached as Annex) Further discussions have begun on the possible actions

and the need to reach out to stakeholders.

3. UTTIPEC ( United Traffic and Transport Planning and Engineering)

UTTIPEC is a unit of the Delhi Development Authority under the LT. Governor of Delhi which

is a multi stakeholder body for all road, transport and infrastructure projects in Delhi. A

meeting was held with Mr. Ashok Bhattcharya, Director, Ms. Romi Roy, DDA and other

members. The Safetipin app was presented and they suggested that reports from Safetipin

audits can be sent to them and they would see if any recommendations could be acted

upon.

4. Secretary, Urban Development Department, Delhi government

A meeting was held with the Secretary to discuss possibilities of using findings from

Safetipin as an input into urban planning and design in the city. He has recommended a

meeting with the Minister and asked for findings to be shared.

5. Members of Aam Aadmi Party from Urban Development Department

A meeting was held with some key personnel from the urban development department to

discuss Safetipin. They have asked for a pilot in Malviya Nagar and findings to be shared.

This will be done in partnership with Romi Roy from DDA.

together. They evinced interest in getting safety audits conducted on a pilot basis and

launching the Hindi version of the app. This discussion is currently under progress.

study of the Gurgaon east district and also suggested that Safetipin work in coordination

Stakeholder Consultation in Gurgaon

On January 29, 2014, a stakeholder consultation "Women's Safety in Public and Work Places

in Gurgaon" was held in Gurgaon as a partnership with Gurgaon First. In addition to them,

the consultation had several supporting partners including Artemis Hospital, Iam Gurgaon,

Gurgaon Moms, Safe Gurgaon for Women, Gurgaon ki Awaz, JAFRA (Joint Action Forum of

Residents Association), Mission Development Gurgaon, Gurgaon Citizens Council, We the

People. It was attended by over 150 people, including resident associations, women from

companies in Gurgaon and members of other citizens groups and initiatives. Hindustan

Times was the media partner for the event and covered it in their publications.

This joint event had two panels on safety in public places and at work places. The keynote

address was made by the Joint Commissioner of Police and Safetipin presented the app and

the key findings from the current Gurgaon audit that is being undertaken.

The panel on safety in public places had Nisha Singh, Councillor, ward 30 Gurgaon and Anju

Pandey, UN Women as speakers. They spoke about the specific concerns and wider aspects

of women's safety and empowerment. Several members from the audience had questions

about what could be done, and expressed interest in using Safetipin. The panel on Women's

Safety at Work places examined the new laws on Sexual harassment and the experience of

women working in the formal and informal sectors.

Discussions centered around the role of different stakeholders and service providers in the

city and who to approach for improvements.

Response and future plans

Response from several key stakeholders has been encouraging and the process of

partnership is beginning. Police and urban bodies have been approached for their

involvement and sharing of data from Safetipin audits done in different parts of the city. As

described above, progress has been made with Dwarka police and Gurgaon police. Plans are

afoot to share findings with DDA and urban development department of Delhi government.

At the community level, we have held sessions through several partner organisations

including Jagori, Plan India and Literacy India to create interest and build the capacity of

youth and women in low income communities to use the Safetipin platform. In all cases,

they have found Safetipin easy to use and have expressed interest to be part of the

initiative. We are also working on a model of working in low income neighbourhoods using

online platforms and regular meetings to supplement the data collected through the

Safetipin app, so as to ensure greater participation. This will also be continuing through the

next few months.
