Did You Know???
- There were a series of firsts associated with the 2012 Progressive Legends Classic. It marked the first year that the Classic
was held at the brand new Barclays Center in Brooklyn and it marked the first time that the No. 1 team in the country -
Indiana - participated in the Classic. But, it marked the second time that all four games of the Championship Rounds of the
Classic were nationally televised on ESPN Networks. The championship game was televised on ESPN, one semifinal round
game aired in ESPN2, and the second semifinal game and the consolation game were shown on ESPNU. In addition, two
of the Regional Round games were televised on ESPNU, two were shown on the Pac-12 Network, two were aired on the Big
Ten Network, and one was televised by Fox Sports South.
- ESPN’s top broadcast team of Dan Shulman, Dick Vitale, Bob Knight, and sideline reporter Andy Katz served as ESPN’s
broadcast team for the Championship Round games at Barclays Center.
- The Progressive Legends Classic sported one the highest attendances among early-season college basketball tournaments in
2012. In excess of 102,000 fans attended the event across the seven hosting venues.
- Over its first six years, the event has featured 14 teams that have gone on to compete in the NCAA Tournament with seven
of those teams advancing to at least the Sweet 16. In 2010, Michigan State played in the Final Four after beginning the season
in the Classic.
- In addition to Barclays Center, the Progressive Legends Classic has been held at some of the finest home courts in the
country, including Florida, Georgetown, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Michigan State, Mis-
sissippi State, New Mexico State, NC State, Oregon State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Tennessee, Texas, Texas Tech,
UTEP, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Washington State, and West Virginia.
- One of the benefits of the Progressive Legends Classic is the yearly honoring of the legends who made their marks on col-
lege basketball. Among those who have been honored include:
- Jerry West, West Virginia - Bill Bradley, Princeton
- Calvin Murphy, Niagara - David Thompson, NC State
- Dominique Wilkins, Georgia - Nate Thurmond, Bowling Green
- Bernard King, Tennessee - Don Haskins, UTEP
- A.C. Green, Oregon State - Jamaal Wilkes, UCLA
- Lou Henson, New Mexico State - Greg Kelser, Michigan State
- Brandin Knight, Pittsburgh - Jalen Rose, Michigan
- John Duren, Georgetown - 1953 Indiana National Championship Team
