KWLA History
Know, Want to know, Learned, and Applied
KWL developed by Donna Ogle in 1986
± Used to encourage reading± Assess students knowledge of the subject
± Develops questions of interest during reading

KWL to KWLA
Used by educators to activate higher order
thinking.
Construct meaning to reading assignment Keep track of progress
 ³A´ stands for application
± Added by educators to determine howknowledge gained could be applied to their
lives.

History of Cornell Notes
Created by Walter Pauk in 1949
± Designed in response to poor test scores
± Meant to be used as a study guide
According to Pauk people lose retention at the
following rates:
± 20 minutes = 47% forgotten
± 1 day = 62% forgotten
± 2 days = 69% forgotten
± 75 days = 75% forgotten
± 78 days = 78% forgotten

Cornell Note Six Step Method
1. Record: facts, key words, and mainpoints
2. Reduce: important facts and createquestions
3. Review: left column for tests
4. Recite: out loud in your own words for
retention5. Recap: summarize notes
6. Reflect: main points in lecture

History of the Venn Diagram
 Introduced by John Venn.
Believed to originate by Gottfired WilhelmLeibniz and Leonard Euler.
But Venn formalized and generalized the usage Venn wrote a book about the diagram in
S ymbolic Log ic (1881) and The P r i ncipl es of Empi r ic al Log ic (1889).
Clarence Irving Lewis coined the term ³VennDiagram´ in his book A Surv ey of S ymplic Log ic (1918).

Earthquake Lesson Day 1
Start lesson with video clips and questions of theHawaiian Earthquake in 2006
Introduce KWLA and have students write what
they know about earthquakes. Students form 4 groups and each group is
required to read and master their topic.± History of Earthquakes: results and effects
± Plate tectonics± Volcanoes and Earthquakes
± Scientific Instruments

Earthquake Lesson Day 2
Share research with peers in other groups.
Read articles on 2006 Hawaii earthquake
and a major world earthquake. Homework:
± Use Cornell Notes for each quake
± Use Venn diagram to compare and contraststhe two earthquakes
