Project

• Goal is for you to conduct an in-depth investigation of a HVAC component

• Select your component and e-mail your 3 top preferences (numbered) by Friday (9/23) at 5pm• I will maximize happiness

• 25% of your grade

Deliverables

• Annotated bibliography Due 10/25• At least 10 peer-reviewed references

• And, no more than 4 non-peer-reviewed references

• Two sentences about each reference1. Relevance of work to your topic

2. Specific results that you will use

• Primary grading criteria are specificity and quality of references

• Submit copies (electronic or analog) with your bibliography

Deliverables

• Oral Presentation Due 12/6• 10 minute oral presentation• +3 minutes questions

• Evaluation criteria:• Clear visuals• Engaging speaker• Depth of investigation• Creativity/innovation• Response to questions

• Portion of evaluation will come from peers

Project Components

• 1)Design manual• How do you select this component? What are most

important factors? What are typical values of these parameters for residential and commercial HVAC systems? What should designers know about this component?

• 2)Current research issues• What are the current/recent research issues for this

component? What are recent improvements and what benefits do they yield? What will this component look like in 30 years?

Evaluation

• Major criteria is depth• 10% Annotated bibliography• 20% Oral presentation• 10% 1) Thoroughness and utility• 20% 2) Depth and justification• 15% 3) Answers requested questions• 15% Quality of writing and analysis• 10% Quality and completeness of references

Components

• Feel free to suggest your own1. Particle filters2. UV disinfection systems3. Fans4. Compressors5. Evaporator coils6. Cooling towers7. Economizers

8. CO2 ventilation controls9. Personal ventilation systems10. Expansion valves

Literature Search

• It is not acceptable to reference websites for this project.

• Several tools available• Practically, I use two:

• Web of Science• Engineering Index

• Many others available• Useful information before 1995• Many errors in search engines/interface• Some issues with connecting from off-campus

Engineering Index

• Journals and conference proceedings• Including ASHRAE Transactions• Watch out for non-peer reviewed material

• UT library• Research Tools, Databases and Indexes to Articles• E• Engineering Index• Also goes by Engineering Village, EI Compendex,

etc.

Web of Science

• Journals• Citation searches• Very quickly locate seminal articles

• UT library• Research Tools, Databases and Indexes to Articles• W• Web of Science

• AKA Science Citation Index

Search Soon to Practice

• Try searches for components• Gauge whether articles are available• See if component is really interesting (to you)

• Come see me if you have not done a literature search before• Many tricks and tips

Objectives

• Show HVAC processes on a psychrometric chart

• Draw condition lines• Define sensible heat ratio

• Draw HVAC processes for real buildings• Single zone• Multiple zone

Adiabatic mixing

• Governing equation hmQhmoutin

Sensible heating

tcmQ p

Dehumidification by Cooling

Real Dehumidification Process

Sensible heat ratio, SHR = QRS/QR

Humidification

hw Specific enthalpy of water added to system

hg Specific enthalpy of saturated water vapor

Homework #2

• 6 problems• Worth different amounts• Some closely follow examples in book and

from lecture

• Assignment #1 will be handed back on Thursday (I hope)

• Skip Chapter 9, will cover chapter 10 on Thursday
