About SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka is a paradise island located in the Indian Ocean. Known as the pearl of the Indian

Ocean, Sri Lanka is the home to a multi-religious, multi-racial and multi-lingual population of 20

million. The four major ethnic groups are Sinhalese, Sri Lankan Tamils, Indian Tamils and Sri

Lankan Moors or Muslims. With a history that dates back over 2500 years, Sri Lanka is known

for its rich culture that is seeped with heritage that helped mold the country into the place of

wonder that it is. Sri Lankan holidays showcase this ancient influence as visitors are embraced

by the warmth of her people. This tiny island lays claim to 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites,

which are well preserved and proudly display the wonder of ancient Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka in all her majesty, grabs the attention of her visitors due to its climate and natural

resources. The climate of Sri Lanka can be described as tropical and warm. The temperature

may vary from 150C in the central highlands to 350C in other low areas. The monsoon

rainfall occurs between the month of May and August in the Southwest, and between

December and March in the Northeast. Sri Lanka has an extraordinarily rich and unique

biodiversity, in fact one of the highest in Asia. Within the confines of just 65,500 square

kilometers inhabit well over 600 species of terrestrial vertebrates. There are more than 82

species of mammals (including elephant, leopard and bear), over 400 bird species (the tally

varies between ornithologists), 133 reptile species (including 80 snakes!), and 54

amphibians (the number rises as new species of frogs are being discovered)
