Dr. Manmohan Singh has grandly announcedthe launch of a $1 billion initiative.

Inclusive Innovation Fund (IIIF) which will focuson fostering technological innovations aimed toserve the needs of millions of poor citizens in the

country. The $1 billion (Rs. 5,000 crore) IIIF will start with

a seed capital of $20 million (Rs. 100 crore)announced by the Prime Minister during the

release of the first report of the NationalInnovation Council in New Delhi on November15, 2011. The Council is headed by Dr. SamPitroda, an advisor to the PM on innovation.

The country also needsinnovation processes that are frugal. in terms ofresources required and these products and services mustalso have a frugal impact on the earths resources andmust be designed to be environmentallysustainable. Innovations in India hence need to cast a

wider net to benefit more and more people who arecurrently marginalized by the system.
