Properties of Matter

Page 2: Properties of matter

Which animal matches the definition: “a small domestic mammal?”

CATCAT

Page 3: Properties of matter

Raise your hand and give one characteristic of a cat.

Page 4: Properties of matter

Definition: to state meaning; show clearly the form

Describe: represent in words; give a detailed account

Page 5: Properties of matter

Physical Property: can be observed with out changing the composition of matter, “Observable”

Examples: color, taste, odor, hardness, melting point, boiling point, conductivity, density

Page 6: Properties of matter

Intensive Physical Property: independent of amount of matter present (sample size)

Examples: density, color, melting point

Extensive Physical Property: depends on the amount of matter present

Examples: mass, volume, length

Page 7: Properties of matter

Chemical Property: observed only when the substance interacts, “Behavioral”

Examples: flammability, combustibility, reactivity, corrosion

Physical Change: a type of change that alters the physical properties of a substance but does not change its composition.

Example: tear, bend, grind, crumple, split, crush

Also includes changes in state: melt, freeze, boil, condense

Page 10: Properties of matter

Chemical Change: a process involving one or more substances changing into new substances; also called a chemical reaction.

Examples: explode, rust, oxidize, corrode, tarnish, ferment, burn, or rot

Page 11: Properties of matter

1. ↑ or ↓ in Temperature.2. Release of a gas.3. Change in color (that you did not cause).4. Production (or change) in odor.5. Formation of a precipitate.

Precipitate: an insoluble solid that separates from a solution.

6. Methane melting

7. KCl + AgNO3 → Solid AgCl

Mrs. D has placed on object in the front of the room. Observe this object carefully. On the index card write down your name, the object, and answer the following:

1. Name one physical property. Is it intensive or extensive?2. Name one chemical property.3. Name one way this object could be changed physically?4. Name one way this object could be changed chemically?
