Welcome to the 2016 Innovation & Excellence Awards. It gives me great pleasure to present the 2016 Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) Australian Development of the Year. RLB’s focus is to create value for our customers through the skills and passion of our people and to nurture strong, long-term partnerships.

We were recently voted preferred global cost consultant partner, according to the World Architecture 100 - 2016 Survey. This is a fantastic accolade for our work globally, and we are proud the architecture community holds our consultancy in such high regard.

Our market has seen a lot of change over the last few years, with many mergers and acquisitions taking place. Our status as an independent advisor gives us a clear differentiator and it is an important distinction for our clients when they are selecting their partners to appraise their projects.

At RLB we believe confidence today creates an inspired tomorrow and it is this thinking that encouraged us to sponsor the awards program over 30 years ago.

We value our long-standing affiliation with the Property Council of Australia and thank them for their partnership.

The Innovation & Excellence Awards continue to give us an opportunity to embrace new ideas and applaud excellence. The short-listed projects showcased in the 2016 awards shape the future of the built environment and create a better tomorrow.

On behalf of RLB, I congratulate all the finalists vying for the prestigious RLB Australian Development of the Year title.

I also gratefully acknowledge the national judges for their continued support.

The Property Council of Australia is the leading advocate for Australia’s biggest industry.Australia’s property industry is vital to the Australian economy.

Property and construction employs 1.1 million Australians, more than mining and manufacturing combined.

Our industry accounts for 11.5 per cent of Australia’s GDP, one ninth of the country’s total economic activity.

As well, property is Australia’s largest collective taxpayer, contributing $45 billion in property taxes alone (before counting our share of corporate tax and GST).

In 2015, the industry built 220,000 dwellings and underpinned our economy as it has been transitioning after the end of the mining boom.

Our industry is vital for prosperity, jobs and strong communities.

Our advocacy priorities

Property is both a major part of the household balance sheet and the Australian economy — and one of the few industries enjoying sustained growth.

That is why the right policy settings are essential to let property grow the economy, and create jobs and strong communities.

The Property Council of Australia has a clear policy agenda for solutions that can lift growth, create more liveable cities and unlock innovation.

With the right tax and regulatory signals, policymakers can harness the potential for the property industry to boost investment, improve housing affordability and build an even more competitive industry.

Our advocacy platform is backed by extensive research and analysis which place a clear emphasis on implementation.

Our Big IdeasGrowth-Generating Tax Reform

• A modern tax system to grow the economy• Retain negative gearing and capital gains tax arrangements

A Compelling Vision For Our Cities• City Deals to drive productivity• Good infrastructure decisions

• Smarter infrastructure investments Boosting Housing Affordability

• Incentives to drive housing supply• Essential data on housing markets• Market solutions to affordable housing• Unlocking housing equity for pensioners• Reducing green tape on housing

Energy Efficient Buildings• A ‘towards net zero’ buildings plan• Strong minimum standards• Accelerate action with targeted incentives• Reform our energy markets• Innovate with better data and smart technology

A Competitive Industry• A strong cop on the beat for Australia’s construction industry —

the return of the ABCC.

Our Policy PrioritiesHousing AffordabilityWe want smart solutions to housing affordability that will tilt the balance back in favour of home buyers. Strong supply pipelines across our capital cities, simpler planning rules, and cuts to red tape are an integral part of our agenda for the year ahead.Tax reform and stamp dutyEvery year Australians pay over $16 billion in stamp duty. Stamp duty acts as a drag on the economy and jobs as well as making housing less affordable. The Property Council will continue to put the case for reform of this bad tax.Cities Australia’s cities contain 75 per cent of the population and generate 80 per cent of Australia’s GDP. Our national population is growing by one million people every three to four years – most of who will live in our cities. Improving the performance of our cities is vital to national productivity. The Property Council supports better funding of infrastructure and UK style ‘City Deals’ to increase collaboration between local, state and federal governments.DiversityThe Property Council is a diversity champion. Initiatives including the Property Male Champions of Change and 100 Women in Property are being undertaken to increase the number of women in leadership roles in our industry. We are also committed to the Panel Pledge to ensure there is gender balance in Property Council panels and forums.

Prosperity, jobs, and strong communities

In 2006 our awards program was relaunched as the Innovation and Excellence Awards to more effectively

At WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, we think engineering is a science, a mission, an art, a vocation. Engineering is part of the beginning, middle and end. It is imagining, thinking, doing and creating.

Our projects shape everyday life. The tallest residential tower in Sydney; the largest and most significant private gallery in the southern hemisphere; one of the largest water infrastructure delivery programs in Australia; and major networks of roads, rail and tunnels that keep our country moving.

We put ourselves in the shoes of the designer, the scientist, the builder, the contractor, the user and the community.

We think global; we think local. We ask questions, we engage and we push. We try new things and perfect old ones. We take ideas and we stretch them. We push boundaries; we challenge mind-sets.

We are professionals with nous. We are practical and focused. We are creative collaborators. We design. We manage. We advise. We have our feet on the ground but our eyes on the stars.

We create buildings that amaze, sustainable environments that thrive, transport corridors that flow. But most importantly, we create ideas. Together, we’ve designed a new kind of engineering and the best is yet to come.

Woods Bagot is a global design and consulting practice with a diverse portfolio of excellence spanning almost 150 years.

Shrine — Galleries of RemembranceBirdwood Avenue, Melbourne VICMelbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance has been expanded beyond a static monument to an exhibition space and education facility. The development includes the Visitors’ Centre, Education Centre, Galleries of Remembrance and offices, all concealed in the Shrine’s vast, previously unused undercroft. Four zigzag-shaped garden courtyards in the surrounding hill lead into the new spaces. The designs are inventive, yet respectful of the Shrine’s historic and symbolic functions. The Shrine can better than ever accommodate activities for the 2014–2018 WWI commemorations.

50 MARTIN PLACE50 Martin Place, Sydney NSW50 Martin Place is an architectural gem. The original Beaux Arts building is the real hero in the story of the latest revitalisation. The design for the refurbishment was an exercise in rediscovering the original qualities of the building with its light wells, generous ceiling heights and richly detailed interiors. The original stone and terrazzo lift lobbies still service the typical floors and the central atrium has been enhanced to maximise light and air circulation. The heritage quality of 50 Martin Place is evident in every corner of the building.

50 MARTIN PLACE, NSWA celebration of 50 Martin Place’s unique heritage qualities is largely made possible by innovative design and engineering solutions. Motivated by the desire and need to preserve the building’s unique heritage character, conventional approaches were challenged, resulting in design and engineering features that are rarely – if ever – seen elsewhere. The trading room has a sub-floor and in-desk air conditioning system to ensure the pressed metal ceiling remain untouched. Grocon’s Swanston Square apartment development in Melbourne, completed in 2015, is the first development to apply the Homes for Homes initiative.
