Terms and Definitions

Replacement and Donor Costs: The donor cost is a rough breakdown for the cost of services for each window. Thisprice is only good in the context of the whole project. Associated Crafts only provides these costs for the purpose of fundraising. These costs are helpful in presenting an adopt a window program to the church members to raise funds for thepreservation of their stained glass heritage. The total of the donor cost may not add up to the total sum of theentire project due to job specific cost such as access. If the church would like to break the project down to stagesplease contact your studio consultant for assistance.

The replacement values listed above are based on our current replacement costs. These costs do not reflect any historicalor sentimental value. Associated Crafts recommends that the church property photograph each window and place thesephotos in an area for safe keeping. In the event of catastrophic loss these photos will be extremely helpful. To learnabout proper protection and maintenance of your stained glass windows. Lead Safety: Any possible lead abatement will be handled by others.

Associated Crafts is a Lead Safe Certified Firm. We are committed to promoting a safe environment and raising awarenessof lead safety. For more information on lead safety please visit http://www.epa.gov/lead/. The EPA’s renovate, repair, and paint rule requires that you use lead safe practices for homes built before 1978, own or operate a child care facility, including preschools and kindergarten classrooms built before 1978 or have a child under six years of age who attend achild care facility built before 1978.

If lead safe practices are needed there may be an extra cost to this contract. The cost of these extra needs will bepresented prior to the start of the project.

Existing Covering: Associated Crafts craftsmen will remove the old protective covering from the stained glass windowsand place in an area for disposal. If the church does not have sufficient garbage cans or dumpsters available AssociatedCrafts will provide trash removal.

Temporary Protection: Associated Crafts craftsmen will install protective plywood in the opening of the stained glasswindow while the stained glass window is being restored. The plywood can be painted in a single appropriate color tocomplement the interior and exterior of the church.

Historic Restoration Section (re-leading): The craftsmen will carefully take a rubbing of the section to be re-leaded.Once the rubbing is complete and the panel(s) removed from the opening. The panel (section) will be disassembled andproperly cleaned. All cracked glass will be edge glued with restoration epoxy to stabilize the crack. Only broken glass thatis specifically called for in the itemized section of the proposal will be replaced. If the Church would like to replace moreglass than proposed Associated Crafts can do so at an additional cost. Associated Crafts craftsmen will then reassemblethe stained glass section using all new lead came and solder. Each section will be cemented on both sides and a properbracing system installed before reinstallation. The restored panel will be reinstalled and properly secured. Whereapplicable a flexible sealant will be applied allowing each panel to expand and contract without any hindrance thuspreventing any future damage to the stained glass. As part of a proper restoration the craftsmen will maintain as much ofthe historic glass and techniques used as in the original piece as possible.

Reducing or Flattening of Bulges: A bulge is a section of the window that has become so weak that the lead and theglass bow in or out. If this condition is allowed to remain unchecked, it will break the glass and the lead joints. Eventuallythe whole section is in danger of falling out. Associated Crafts craftsmen will flatten or reduce the bulged areas as listed inthe itemized work section of this proposal. Flattening the bulge will be done by either in place manipulation or byremoving the bulged panel and working it flat on a table before reinstalling. After the bulges are flattened, a new steelbrace will be installed to prevent reoccurrence. Each new brace will be installed so that it will achieve maximum supportwith minimum intervention to the design. In some cases due to existing setting or design completely flattening the bulgedarea may not be possible. What is important is that the window is brought back into the proper plane and correctlysupported so future damage can not occur. Often there may be more small bulges present in a window but due to

position, setting etc., they may not have been proposed for correction as they are not potentially damaging to the stainedglass window. However if the church decides to repair these bulges Associated Crafts can provide a quote for theadditional cost to perform the extra work. You can only have one bulge in each panel.

Broken Painted Glass Replacement: Painted Glass: Painted glass is stained glass painted and fired in a kiln to atemperature of 1,200 degrees so the paint can fuse into the glass.

Maintaining the originality is a high priority but in some cases, replacing the glass is the only choice. Generally a piece ofglass needs to be replaced if it has a hole in it, is completely broken out or has multiple cracks. Other repairable piecesare considered cracked glass.

Associated Crafts employs only the finest artists available to replicate painted glass pieces. Each artist specializes induplicating original pieces of painted glass, which allows Associated Crafts to provide the best possible match. However, weathering and fading may create obstacles that can make an exact match impossible.

Associated Crafts has a large selection of stained glass in stock and has the ability to acquire a large selection of differentstained glass types. Associated Crafts craftsmen will provide the best possible matches for your project. Even with thesecapabilities, exact matches may be impossible due to age, availability, weathering or lost proprietary glass formulas.

Re-cementing: The exterior surface of the stained glass window will have a specially formulated cement compoundbrushed underneath the lead flanges. Re-cementing will help strengthen and weatherproof (not waterproof or preventleakage) the window by replacing the original cement compound, which has loosened or fallen out over the years. Thisprocess also does an excellent job cleaning the window.

New Steel Braces: A reinforcing bar (usually flat or round in shape) is used to support the stained glass panel thuspreventing bulging. Most often these braces are installed in the interior of stained glass. The new bars will be secured byeither soldering the bar to the lead joints or by installing wire ties. The method used is based upon the method used inthe existing window.

Painting: Associated Crafts craftsmen will scrape loose or flaking paint, re-putty any needed areas and apply SherwinWilliams Duration paint. Sealing of cracks and basic wood filling (epoxy) are included in the painting service. The churchwill have its choice of paint color. Associated Crafts recommends the use Sherwin Williams Duration paint. AssociatedCrafts is not responsible for the cleaning off of old paint by others.

Klear-Flo© Protective Covering System: The protective covering system uses aluminum divider bars as needed. Thesedivider bars will be secured with non-corrosive anchors. Each section of the protective covering will be set so it supportsits own weight. In order to guarantee a proper installation the project foreman will determine the correct setting of thealuminum divider bars. The craftsmen will seal the protective covering with a high quality sealant (Dow Corning 795 orSilpruf®). This quality sealant will guarantee a waterproof installation that will last for many years to come. Theprotective covering used will be 1/4 inch acrylic. The basic protective covering installation does not include perimeterframing. Perimeter installation will be listed separately. Available in three standard colors white, bronze and limestone.

Venting of Klear-Flo© Protective Covering System: Either 3/8" breather tube (in frame) or 1" screened louvers, dependingon glazing situation. This venting system is necessary to reduce heat build up, reduce potential for condensation, andallow air circulation, thus preserving the stained glass windows.

Setting of Klear-Flo© Protective Covering System: Associated Crafts gives the church the flexibility to have the newcovering installed by outset (brick to brick) or by inset. The Associated Crafts project manager will show the church theoptions for the setting so they can decide what is best for the Church. Some projects are specified in the itemized windowby window scope of work.

Install Klear Flo© Into Ventilators: Associated Crafts craftsmen will place new protective covering in the existing

ventilators, remove old glazing and wrap the protective covering with a lead border. This border will be soldered to thestained glass to secure the covering, when possible. Once the protective covering is secured, it will be sealed in place toprevent leakage. A variety of methods to secure the covering may be used. The foreman in charge will select the mostappropriate way for each installation. The type of covering used will be the same as used in the rest of the proposal. Thisservice does not include adjusting the vents to operate more freely.

Installing Klear Flo© with Perimeter Frame: Perimeter frame is an F-shaped aluminum bar that serves as theperimeter frame for protective glazing. Associated Crafts craftsmen will custom fit and install a new aluminum frame, which will fit the entire perimeter of the stained glass window. This method of installation a new protective coveringprovides an ideal glazing situation, allowing proper expansion and contraction with out any undue stress. This type ofinstallation is recommended for glass. Available in three standard colors white, bronze and limestone.

Contouring Klear Flo© Framing: The new aluminum divider bars, used to set the protective covering, will be bent toclosely match the existing millwork. Associated Crafts craftsmen will custom fit and bend each divider bar on the site.Installing protective covering by bending the new protective covering frame minimizes shadowing and leaves the buildingwith a much more visually appealing installation. Associated Crafts extrudes its own specially designed framing metal tobe able to contour this framing to unequaled standards. Each Associated Crafts crew is equipped with our own customdesigned benders that are exclusive to the Associated Crafts family.

Cleaning the interior of Stained Glass: Associated Crafts craftsmen will clean the interior surface of the stained glasswindow by spraying a special liquid cleaning solution on the stained glass window and then wiping the solution off with asoft cloth. Although Associated Crafts craftsmen are very thorough in their cleaning procedures, it is impossible to removeheavy lime deposits or paint over spray (etc.) with this cleaning method. Associated Crafts craftsmen can provide othercleaning methods to address these concerns on a time and material basis only by bid. Windows with painted glass will betested for stability. The foreman in charge of the project will determine the correct cleaning method to assure qualityresults as well as preserving the window.

Stained Glass Removal: Associated Crafts craftsmen will photograph and measure each stained glass window. Ourskilled craftsmen will remove the windows from their present setting carefully, however antique stained glass windowsmay have deterioration not visible prior to removal. Once the stained glass is removed the windows will be packed intocustom crates for storage or transportation. Associated Crafts will provide you with a copy of the documentation for yourrecords.

Re-installation: The stained glass panels will be properly re-installed into the new building into frames provided byother. Associated Crafts has not included any resizing or repairs in this proposal. The proper stops and sized frames arethe responsibility of another.

General Services: Associated Crafts craftsmen will re-secure or replace any loose or missing brace bars. All crackedglass will be repaired by either an application of a epoxy or a lead flange. The interior divider bars will be re-glazed asneeded. Light leaks will also be repaired.

Scheduling and Work Area: Associated Crafts craftsmen will clean up the work area at the end of each workday. Ourcraftsmen will work around any functions in which the Church deems important. Our craftsman work long hours andSaturdays. We appreciated uninterrupted access to the project site of 10 to 12 hours per day. At the churches requestsimple scaffolding will be taken down over the weekends. Associated Crafts asks that you provide as much notice aspossible. It is also most helpful if we can be allowed the use of an area in the church to store and secure supplies andtools during the project.

Our Guarantee: Associated Crafts employs only the finest craftsmen available. Each crew foreman is experienced andthoroughly trained.

Each Associated Crafts project manager will schedule a walk through with the project representative prior to thecompletion of each project. During the walk through the project manager will explain the completed work and answer anyquestions the representative may have. We urge the church to have all interested parties involved in this walk through.
