Cutout DetailsMVT 171 is a neutral displacement protection unit, comprising

two elements, namely element 1 & element 2, there by offering

two stages of protection. Element 1, the first stage of protection

is provided with Definite Time Lag (DTL). Element 2 has DTL or

numerous IDMTL curves. One of the elements can also be put

off, when it is not necessary.

Stator Earth Fault ProtectionA common method of grounding an AC generator is to connect

a distribution transformer between the neutral of the generator

and the station ground. The distribution transformer’s primary

voltage rating is equal to, or greater than, the generator’s rated

line-to-neutral voltage. The secondary is rated for 110V or

230V AC. A resistor is connected across the secondary, which

offers (square times the turns ratio of the transformer of its

value) high resistance on the primary side. This reduces the

ground fault current to great extent.

A ground fault on the generator terminal will result in rated line-

to-neutral voltage across the transformer primary where as the

ground fault near the neutral results in low voltage. The MVT

171 relay, which is connected across the secondary resistor,

will sense this voltage and operates. The setting point of this

relay must be higher than the neutral voltage results due to

normal unbalance in order to avoid nuisance trips. This will

allow certain percentage of the stator winding near the neutral

to go unprotected. For example 95% of the stator windings will

be protected, if 5% of the voltage is set (5.5V setting on the

relay for 110V AC PT supply) in the relay. (A minimum setting

possible in MVT 171 relay is 0.5V and the relay is 0.5V and the

relay is rated for 440V AC continuously)

Capacitor Bank ProtectionFor star with isolated neutral or delta connected capacitor bank,

the relay MVT 171 can be connected across the open delta

winding of the three phase PTs, the primary of which is connected

across each phase capacitor string. Alternatively for star

connected capacitor bank the relay can be connected across the

secondary of the transformer connected across the neutral of

the capacitor bank and ground. For grounded star connected

capacitor banks the MVT 171 is connected across the open

In many applications of this relay, the third harmonic component

predominates in the residual voltage under normal conditions.

Since low setting is adopted in the relay it should not

unnecessarily sense the harmonic voltages. The type MVT 171

relay operates only for fundamental frequency and rejects all

harmonic voltages.

The three modules viz. Input, Power supply and Measuring

modules are plugged into the Front fascia which house switches,

LEDs and LED display for the human machine interface. All PCBs

are well protected from one another and from external

environment with best shielding for better electromagnetic

compatibility and housed in the enclosed chassis, which is with

drawable from the outer case.

This relay has independent power supply provided with galvanic

isolation. The relay is suitable for wide range of auxiliary input

Stator Earth Fault ProtectionA common method of grounding an AC generator is to connect

allow certain percentage of the stator winding near the neutral
