Congratulations to Tom and Doris Rinker of Ankeny who were the winners of our first ever Golf Ball Drop contest! At the end of the tournament, all of the purchased, pre-numbered, and assigned balls were dropped from the height of a construction lift onto the putting green. The person whose ball rolled in the cup first, would win $250 and if none rolled in, then the closest to the cup would win $100. Congrats to Tom and Doris whose ball rolled into the cup! Thanks to Badding Construction for the use of their lift

A New Roster in Administration

The past year has seen several changes in leadership at New Hope, with more coming over the next year.

These changes have resulted in several internal promotions and new opportunities for existing employees.

Kim Platt has been promoted to Director of Residential Services. Kim now directs services for both

on-campus and community residential services. Kim began her career with New

Hope over 25 years ago as a substitute staff member. Since then, Kim has

worked as a Hab Tech, Shift Leader, Program Director, Residential Supervisor and

Coordinator, and Community Living Supervisor. She then received her Associates

degree in General Studies and certification in Management and Supervision in

2010. Since then she was promoted to Assistant Community Living Director,

followed by her most recent position as Director of Vocational Services. She began

her current duties as Director of Residential Services in February of 2015. Kim’s

experience across the varied roles she has held gives her great insight into what

various staff need to do to ensure quality services are delivered to our clients.

Kim’s promotion resulted in a vacancy in the Director of Vocational Services

position. Jen Daniel took over this role on April 13th, 2013. Jen started with New

Hope over 20 years ago as Client Support Staff. Since then, Jen has worked in

both residential and vocational positions as a job coach, Community Living

Supervisor, and as a Program Coordinator. She has also served on many

committees and task forces. Jen received a Bachelors Degree in Elementary

Education at the University of Northern Iowa. Jen’s duties include overseeing all

vocational services including Employment Resources, New Hope Enterprises, and

Day Habilitation. Jen will have an instrumental role in working to integrate more of

our clients into the community over the next couple of years.

In addition to the above changes that have already taken place, Chuck Clark,

Chief Financial Officer, has announced his pending retirement. Chuck is the

most tenured employee at New Hope and will reach his 40 year anniversary of

employment in 2016. We will share more details regarding Chuck’s retirement

in the future. Chuck has played a vital role taking New Hope from a shoe-string

budget, growing us into Carroll’s 6th largest organization. Everyone here at

New Hope is very appreciative of Chuck’s committed service to New Hope and

the individuals that we serve.

Chucks retirement announcement opened the door

for Nicole McCarville, who has been promoted to the

Chief Financial Officer In Training, and has begun her duties in this role. Nicole

graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Accounting from the Honors Program at the

University Of Nebraska-Lincoln in May 2007. Nicole interned at the Nebraska

Board of Public Accountancy throughout college. She worked as an auditor at

Deloitte and Touche LLP in Omaha from September 2007 to May of 2013. She

passed the CPA exam in 2008 and became a licensed CPA in Nebraska in Fall

2009. Nicole began employment at New Hope in June 2013 as the Accounting

Manager. Nicole will officially take over as the Chief Financial Officer when Chuck

retires.

In terms of being a good steward with the generous gifts our donors have shared, I

would give us an “A” for the year. In our 2014 Christmas Appeal we focused our

efforts in seeking matching gifts for a $25,000 Challenge Donation to be used for

the purpose of a donor-designated gift. The funds were directed to be shared with

our Client Support Staff who provide the dedicated and compassionate care in our

mission of enriching lives. A total of $53,140 was raised and shared with 308

employees. The message sent by your generosity to our staff was important.

In the spring of 2014, New Hope successfully fundraised for the expenses related

to the repurposing of a former campus service building into a student dormitory for

Des Moines Area Community College. Our interest in this project lies in creating a

sustainable employee resource. The students prioritized for this student housing

will become part-time employees of New Hope while pursuing their degree and

hopefully become a full-time New Hope employee when they finish their education.

Growing New Hope’s Endowment Fund has also been a focus this year. Our Board of Trustees recognizes

with the continued strain on Medicaid funding that supplementing the monies available for compensation

to employees has become a critical component of not only addressing present needs, but creating

solutions for the future. One way you can help grow New Hope’s Endowment Fund is through a cash gift

now or by including us in your estate plans. If you want to know the best way or have any questions,

please contact Jodie Jansen, Director of Development and she can assist you. If you have already

included us in your estate planning, please notify Jodie so we can properly thank you!

Thank you for your generous gifts. We are truly grateful.

other volunteers worked alongside Speed

Herrig and the Cookies BBQ team, serving

up the delicious barbeque. This was the 4th

year that the Cookies fundraiser was held.

Hope Hall : A Vision Becomes Reality

New Hope and Des Moines Area Community College have collaborated on a project that has been

successfully completed to create education and workforce solutions; providing a supply of employees for

New Hope’s services as well as offer DMACC students a housing option while offering a new Associates

degree in the Human Services program in Carroll.

The New Hope Campus home has been repurposed into a 16 unit residence hall for DMACC students.

This living environment provides a common area for students to watch TV, study, relax with friends, etc.

The kitchen will provide food storage and shared cooking spaces. Wireless internet, cable, and all utilities

are included as well as an on-site laundry area. Students enrolled in Fall, Spring and Summer semesters

can enjoy housing all year long and with extremely low rent.

DMACC hosted an Open House and Ribbon Cutting on August 7th, in celebration of the completion of the

building, Hope Hall. This Open House provided tours of the building, employment resources, and

opportunity for scholarships. DMACC currently has 10 students signed up and moved into the dorms and is

continuing to accept applicants.

New Hope announces changes in services following Medicaid’s Home and Community-Based Services

(HCBS) with new regulations regarding the need for all services provided to individuals with disabilities to

be in a community setting. As a result, in mid-August, all New Hope day services in Manning are provided

directly from the client’s homes. Clients will continue to be supported to become more independent,

choosing how they wish to spend their time during the day, while being encouraged to remain active in the

community. Day Hab is looking for volunteer opportunities in the Carroll and Manning areas.

Currently some of the volunteer activities we are participating in are:

• Carroll Animal Rescue League cat & dog shelters

• Delivering Meals on Wheels (2 days a week)

• Going to Holy Spirit Church to straighten up after the weekend services

• Picking up donated food items from Hy-Vee and the Pizza Hut and delivering them to the Family Re-

source Center

• Going to the Family Development Center at New Opportunities Inc. to straighten up

• Sort & hang donated clothing

• Manning Day Hab is watering/maintaining planters in Manning downtown.

Changes For the Better

Volunteer opportunities that clients enjoy is helping at the Carroll Area Animal Shelter and the Family Development Center.

Do you know of any organizations or place that is looking for volunteers? We would be interested

in hearing from you!

American Legion Helps Fund Outdoor Learning Center

The American Legion provided New Hope with a grant of $2,000. The funds will be used to construct an Outdoor Learning Center on the campus of New Hope. The Outdoor Learning Center consist of a fenced in area, which is attached to one of the campus homes, allowing individuals to move about freely in a safe and secure environment. The environment will be designed to focus on the specific needs of people with autism, as well as address the needs of all adults at New Hope. Within this fenced in yard, clients will get the chance to build their independence and create fun. Pictured: Jake Hinote, Patty Jobe, Rhonda Mart, Jodie Jansen, Melvin
