PRINCIPAL’S PIECE 23 OCTOBER 2013 Dear Parents and Caregivers Welcome to Term 4. Unfortunately the Northwest wind did not allow us to have the clean start we wanted. This is a very short term for our seniors so it was frustrating not to be able to open on the first Monday. We had one tree fall across the driveway outside the Hall and some minor damage. It is very important that the senior students make the most of the time that they have in class and in study. Most have external exams so they need to prepare for these as well as finish any internal assessments. Please encourage your Year 11/12 and 13 children to put time into their studies. We welcome a group of Thai students to the College. They arrived at the start of the term and are here for two weeks. Thank you to Mrs Caron Chandler for organising their programme and homestays. Thank you to all of the parents who are hosting these students. The weather helped last Saturday’s Hutt Fest. A big thank you goes to Wayne Pannett for organising another successful musical event. It was great to see the way past pupils performed and helped out at the Fest. I was again impressed with the number of our students who take this opportunity to perform. For many this is a very daunting challenge, but with the support of those around them they overcome their fears and deliver for themselves and the audience. Over the last week I have been notified about some awards and scholarships that our Year 13 students are obtaining for study in 2014. If your child has received any award/scholarships can you let Mrs Canham know so we as a school can also acknowledge their success. YYEEAARR 1100 EEXXAAMMSS Please find attached information with regards to the Year 10 exams which are quickly approaching. These exams are an introduction to exam conditions and to assist in the development of time management skills in preparation for NCEA in 2014. Students are encouraged to participate fully and to take the sitting of these exams seriously. The support you give your child is appreciated.

EExxaamm TTiimmeettaabbllee:: Thursday 7th November - Morning (9am – 11am): English Afternoon (11:30am – 1:30pm): Maths Friday 8th November - Morning (9am – 11am): Science Afternoon (11:30am – 1:30pm): Social Studies All exams are two hours in length. The morning exam is followed by interval, then the second exam slot. Period 5 is options. Thursday P5 – normal option class (Ag, DGT, Bus, and French) and Friday P5 the other option line (Tech, Art, DGT and DVC).

SSuubbjjeecctt SSuummmmaarryy:: English This exam focuses on the work learnt during the year and is used as a first taste of the exam system in preparation for Year 11. The sections of the exam include language skills and reading comprehension; an essay in response to a novel or film studied in class showing your understanding of characters and ideas; research skills. Social Studies The Year 10 Social Studies exam will consist of 5 sections: Mapping Skills, Graphing Skills, Identifying and explaining viewpoints, Social decision making and Writing Skills. Students should choose two topics they have studied this year to revise for the Writing Skills section. Science There will be four sections in the Science exam: Skills: Multiple choice questions, Chemical World (Acid and Bases), Living World (Genetics), Physical World (Forces). Mathematics The exam consists of: Algebra – expand, simplify, factorize, substitute and solve all types including fractions, Pythagoras and Trigonometry – angle rules, lines, triangles, circle rules and parallel lines, Vocabulary. It gives a first experience of the exam situation as students will need to prioritize to ensure they spend sufficient time on each of the papers to do themselves credit. This is a skill they will need in NCEA exams next year. You can help your student study by using some of the resources that are found in the back of the student diary (pages 128 – 143). You can also help by questioning your student, providing a quiet study area, making sure they are getting enough sleep and that they are not on their computers or other devices whilst studying. Thank you Fiona Jessep Dean Yr 9/10

We have visited Methven Primary School and spent time in Mrs Proudman's class. Two days of each week are spent in class with our Mt Hutt College students. We have a local day trip and a visit to Methven Pre-School to come and apart from finding it very cold the students are enjoying their time here with us. First Aid Course 28 - 29 Jan

8.45 – around 3.30pm in E Block

Y12 and Y13 students

The course will be held at school on 28 - 29 Jan 2014, starting at 8.45am and running until

around 3.30pm. It is important that students arrange to be present for the entire course

or they risk not completing all the requirements to gain the qualification. On the day of

the course students will need to bring a pen and to wear comfortable clothing, appropriate

for activities which will involve lying on the floor.

Cost $40 per student. The actual cost is $99 but we are able to subsidise this from a

budget Careers administers which can currently be used to help students prepare for the

workplace. This is a special school’s price, around half the normal cost to the public. There is

a possibility that students will qualify to have their course funded, especially those

students whose school studies place them in at-risk-environments. Fees may be covered for

example of those students studying outdoor education, agriculture, workshop technology

and Gateway students. Any students enrolling for these subjects should take this course.

This refund will depend on the new regulations being proposed by the Ministry around the

use of the STAR budget. If funding is granted, students will be reimbursed the cost at the start of 2014 after

the completion of the course AND after the commencement of that subject in 2014.

Enrolment forms will be given out Tuesday 22 October and must be returned to book a place to

the office by 6 Nov before students go on exam leave.

PAYMENT needs to be made in the 2014 financial year during January before the course

starts

The office will be open from 23 January or payment can be made by direct credit to the

school bank account
