PRINCIPAL’S PIECE 10 APRIL 2013 Dear Parents and Caregivers, This is the last newsletter for the term. As usual it has been a busy first term but it also has been a long term. One of the advantages of being a relatively small College is that all students have the opportunity of being involved in co-curricular activities from our school production, sports teams, school committees to being chosen to represent the College at events. This means that some students become very busy as they balance these opportunities with their school work. But this too is a chance to develop their organisational skills. Some successes that have come to my attention recently are; our Equestrian Teams who competed in the Canterbury Interschool Dressage Competition, our Mountain Bikers who competed at the South Island Mountain Biking Championships, our Golf Croquet team, our swimmers at the Aoraki School Swimming Championships, the Athletics team at the Aoraki and South island Athletics Championships and our Year 7/8 Cricket team. We currently have a group of Thai students visiting the College. Thank you to those who are hosting them. Sukey Allen has been at the Canterbury Model United Nations. The Prefects organised a very successful “Where’s Wally” social as well as other events. The school production team continue to rehearse and a variety of House competitions continue. What is particularly pleasing about all that occurs at school is that it gives the students the chance to excel and try activities that they might not have thought about before. Individuals have achieved personal bests, teams have achieved more than they expected and others have learnt from the disappointments of not reaching their target. All good life skills. With the nature of the College many students are involved in more than one of these opportunities. I would ask you to continue to encourage your child to put this effort and enthusiasm into their class work so they can experience the success which comes from understanding their classroom subjects. During the break a number of students are working with outside providers to develop their agricultural skills and pick up qualifications. I would like to think that all our students will take time in the term holidays to review their achievements and disappointments as well as help at home and come back to school next term with more determination to “Strive for Excellence.” John Schreurs Principal Mount Hutt College/Lauriston School Combined Board of Trustees Board of Trustees Election, 2013 Nominations are invited for the election of five parent representatives to the Board of Trustees. SSTTUUDDEENNTT OOPPPPOORRTTUUNNIITTYY The Royal Thai Embassy is starting a Thai/NZ Language and Cultural Students Exchange Programme for selected New Zealand school students aged 14 - 18 years - to travel to Thailand for up to five weeks from early June 2013. The Royal Thai Government will provide tickets for air travel, medical insurance, and will arrange a homestay placement, a school placement (for at least two weeks) and a programme of visits and sight-seeing trips for the successful applicants. The deadline to apply for this opportunity is quite short – students have been asked to see Mrs Canham for an information sheet if interested.

BRIDGING EDUCATION WITH INDUSTRY The Careers Expo has a 22 year partnership with schools and the Industry sector and is New Zealand's largest careers centered expo, comprised of employers, Industry, tertiary providers, training institutes and government departments. The Expo offers an unequaled opportunity for school leavers and job seekers to engage directly with careers and employment experts. In 2013 we have partnered strategically with the Ministry of Education and Careers New Zealand to completely redesign our programme to showcase the Vocational Pathways model that is reshaping the way students gain credits and qualifications. Admission to the Expo is FREE to all, you can download a brochure from the website, www.careerexpo.org.nz.

YEAR 11 As in past years, we will be taking the Y11 students. We will go on Thursday 16 May. The bus will leave Mount Hutt College at 9am and return during second lunch. We will not be stopping to buy food. Students are to wear school uniform. We expect all the students to attend if possible. There will be a charge for the bus. Permission slips will be issued at the beginning of Term Two. I ask for your co-operation as there will be a tight time frame permission slips and money MUST be in before 10 May. If your student has lost theirs, a copy of the permission slip can be found on the school website under “Calender.”

YEAR 12/Y13 The Expo is open to members of the public on Saturday 18 May 10am – 4pm and on Thursday evening 5 – 7pm. It would be a good idea to go along with your son or daughter on the Saturday or Thursday evening. There will be exhibitors from all around New Zealand.

UC INFORMATION DAY - FRIDAY 26 APRIL 2013 UC Information Day will be held on Friday 26 April from 9am to 5pm. We extend this invitation to all prospective students, their families. Information Day will provide a great opportunity for students thinking of undertaking study in 2013 or beyond to find out more and experience UC. The UC Information Day website is the best source of information and will continue to be updated with information. DUNEDIN TERTIARY INFORMATION DAY 13 MAY I am interested in taking students who are seriously considering enrolling for study in Dunedin in 2014. This is not an opportunity to visit Dunedin and have a day out. I ask students to think carefully about this and be fair. I plan to take a mini bus down leaving early in the morning and returning on the same day. Seats are limited.

I would like to hear from a parent who in able to come with us to share the driving. The permission slip needs to be signed at home by a parent or guardian. There is a tight turnaround for the slips which could be faxed if convenient. Fax 3028328. The bus fare must be paid before the trip departs and can be paid to the office any time from now on. Money paid by 9 May. If your student has lost their form a copy of the permission slip can be found on the school website under “Calendar.”

IINNTTEERRNNAATTIIOONNAALL DDEEPPAARRTTMMEENNTT Good bye from Mako and Misono. Hi, I’m Mako Takanashi and I’m from Japan. I came here on the 25th January and I have been at Mt. Hutt College for about 3 months. I will leave New Zealand on 20th April. I’m really grateful to the people around me. Sometimes I was disappointed with my life and cried but the people around me always helped and cared for me. Thanks to them I enjoyed my study abroad in this school. I would like to stay here longer but I can’t do that, so after I go back to Japan I will study hard to get better English skills. Thank you very much for everyone’s kindness. Mako Takanashi I was so glad to stay here. When I cried or felt lonely I was helped by everyone and that made me feel this was my new place. Through this I learnt about English and matured mentally. So I want to thank them from deep in my heart. I would like to stay here if I could but I would also like to tell my Japanese friends how good New Zealand is. Thank you for helping me for 3 months. Misono Namma

DDrreessssaaggee There was great turnout with 24 teams competing at the Canterbury Interschool Dressage Competition at McLeans Island, with Mt Hutt College fielding two teams. Mt Hutt Black came a respectable 4th and Mt Hutt Red (competing for the first time for school at this level), placed mid field in the competition. Special thanks to all the parents supporting our teams, writing for judges, stewarding and providing food for judges. It was not easy starting at 6.30am and not getting home until 6.45pm. GGoollff CCrrooqquueett CChhaammppss Conditions were warm and sunny on Thursday 4th April, when a team of Year 7 and 8 students represented Mt Hutt College at the Aoraki Secondary Schools Golf Croquet Championships, held at the West End Croquet Club in Timaru. Playing golf croquet for the first time, Edmund Fordyce led the team with his experience in the other form of the game, association croquet, playing a significant part. However rookies Richard Turpie, Joshua Ree and Archie Redfern made their fair share of hoops. As a team, the boys won all five of their round robin games, earning them a place in the final. They narrowly won that match to become the champions of the beginner’s grade. It was very satisfying to see the significant improvement in skills and tactics from all the boys as the day progressed.
