PRINCIPAL’S PIECE LAST NEWSLETTER FOR 2013 Dear Parents and Caregivers This is the last newsletter for 2013. Another busy year for Mount Hutt College is coming to an end. I wish to thank you all for your support of your child’s learning as well as your support of the College and the staff. We all aim to give the best possible educational opportunities to all the students at the College. The Senior examinations are now completed and we all look forward to seeing the results of their endeavours at the beginning of 2014. Last week the Year 7 students went to Orana Park. Feedback from the staff at Orana Park has been extremely positive. They described our students as some of the best they have had at the park, not just their behaviour but also the questions they asked and the way the engaged in the educational programme. This does not just happen by accident. These students are a credit to themselves and their families. Their teachers can also take some credit for the Year 7 classes’ positive culture. Last week we had the Life Education bus on site. The educators associated with this bus comment on the positive nature of our students. The presenters who delivered the Sell Programme to our Year 10 Students also made positive comments about the level of engagement of the students. On Thursday we have our Community Services Day. Mr Gorrie has received many requests for our students to work in the Community. I thank Methven Travel for providing us with buses to allow the students to reach out into the community. This day fits in well with the Vision, Principles and Values of the New Zealand Curriculum as well as our values stated in PRIDE. As we go about our busy lives, Community Services Day reminds me to take some time and think about how the little things we do can make someone else’s day a little better. I thank everyone involved with the College for their positive contributions. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and I hope all students get the chance to pay forward a little of their break to their families. John Schreurs Principal Meri Kirihimete! Merry Christmas! Ngā mihi o te Tau Hou ki a koutou katoa. Wishing you all a very Happy New Year.

OORRAANNAA PPAARRKK The Year 7 classes visited Orana Park on Friday 29th November. They are learning about endangered species in CCM. The Zoo School developed a special Endangered Species Programme around HIPPO (Habitat Loss, Introduced Species, Pollution, Population Growth and Over Exploitation) just for us! The weather was perfect (compared to the rest of the week), combined with the great questions asked by students and their terrific behaviour - it was a fantastic EOTC trip.

A reminder to all Year 11 and 12 students who do not have a current First Aid certificate, that Mrs Dickson is providing a course through Red Cross for students in the week before Term 1 2014, at the college. Course details, permission slip and payment details are available at the school office (and also in this newsletter). I will put a pdf copy on the school website ‘wiki’ under ‘Careers’. Payment is minimal and does not have to be paid until January 2014. Susan Dickson is absent and Lyn Schott (Gateway Coordinator) is helping any student or parent with Careers enquiries in her absence 03 3028437 x 711. Ryan Wilson, Year 11 and 12 Dean and I attended the ‘Time for a Change’ Careers conference in Queenstown earlier this month. Presentations by the Vice Chancellor of Massey, Steve Maharey and Olaf Diegel, mechatronics tutor at Massey ensured we have up to date information on developments in 3D printing and the effects of technology in the workplace and future careers. Bill English spoke about how to use what we have to make the most of our education system to the greatest effect within our communities. There were some intriguing presentations by Psychologist, Margaret Ross about our own and classroom behaviours; and Karen Boyes on the 16 Habits of Mind. Two informative workshops were showcasing models of how other schools integrate their Careers Education Programmes in a school-wide approach. This is what Careers at Mount Hutt College have been working on with a consultant from Careers New Zealand for the past two years. The plan is now in place and these workshops showed how innovations in timetabling and pathway development are working. There is a working group within faculty at Mount Hutt College looking toward adapting some of these innovations and practices to help students starting in 2014. Watch this space for more information for parents and students. Lyn Schott Gateway Coordinator

The Gateway Programme at Mount Hutt College has seen an increase in student numbers due to an increased awareness of pathway options for the future. Student numbers are at 25 for 2013 and 2014. Students are realising that there are many and varied options for study in the future and a huge number of careers which are tailored to their talents. In 2013 we have had students studying core health, animal care, beauty skills, customer service, hospitality, carpentry, agriculture, cookery skills. All students had work experience in these areas with our local employers. A list of those I wish to thank are below. This year we had active participation from Ashburton Hospital in the health area and NZ Ski.com in the medical room and cafe providing work experience for our core health student and hospitality. Bradfords remain our main trainer for

the building students and also Joseph Builders at Mt Somers employed a local student for carpentry training. Heritage Café and Café 131 provided excellent training for hospitality and cookery skills students, whilst our own Magpie Café undertook some customer service training and all our practice for Barista skills run by Aoraki Polytech. This led to a successful day at the School Fair for our trainees, providing coffees to those attending. Richard Maw and Midlands Seeds were one again unfailing support for our Agricultural students. Paul Dixey of Provincial Livestock provided information that helped a student wishing to study livestock agent training. Canterbury Vets were wonderful trainers for the animal care student, teaching how to examine and care for dogs and cats and we received support from the SPCA and Kiwi Dog Groomers in Ashburton for some of the practical elements now required for these units. Our local pre-schools Methven Pre-School and Leap Ahead were very supportive of the seven students who studied with them. Some students completed programmes which involved several strands of key learning to prepare them for applications to flight attending. The learning areas were customer service, hospitality and early childhood. Other students were able to study several units in early childhood alone. Vanessa Kelk of Skin Therapy was happy to provide excellent training in beauty therapy techniques for our first students studying this career. All students on Gateway this year achieved in their chosen areas. Their outcomes include returning for Year 13, progressing to University, Polytechnic or private college training, correspondence learning, apprenticeship, jobs and university applications. This is what we want for students- a successful outcome so they can go forward with confidence to the next part of their learning and development. Lyn Schott Gateway Co-ordinator

NNaattiioonnaall AAtthhlleettiiccss Aimee Elliot is the sole representative for Mount Hutt College at this year’s Nationals to be held in Hamilton this weekend. Aimee will be representing the College in the Year 9 girls’ road race. This is the same venue where our previous best road race placing (4th) was achieved by Erin Heasley many years ago. Aimee is the current Aoraki Cross Country title holder for her age group and has placed in the top 10 at several Canterbury school events. Aimee placed 12th at the National Secondary School Cross Country Champs back in June which was held in Christchurch. Aimee’s natural running talent allows her to perform at a high level. Good luck Aimee!

First Aid Course 28 - 29 Jan

8.45 – around 3.30pm in E Block

Y12 and Y13 students

The course will be held at school on 28 - 29 Jan 2014, starting at 8.45am and running until

around 3.30pm. It is important that students arrange to be present for the entire course or they risk not

completing all the requirements to gain the qualification. On the day of the course students will need to bring a

pen and to wear comfortable clothing, appropriate for activities which will involve lying on the floor.

Cost $40 per student. The actual cost is $99 but we are able to subsidise this from a

budget Careers administers which can currently be used to help students prepare for the

workplace. This is a special school’s price, around half the normal cost to the public. There is

a possibility that students will qualify to have their course funded, especially those

students whose school studies place them in at-risk-environments. Fees may be covered for

example of those students studying outdoor education, agriculture, workshop technology

and Gateway students. Any students enrolling for these subjects should take this course.

This refund will depend on the new regulations being proposed by the Ministry around the

use of the STAR budget. If funding is granted, students will be reimbursed the cost at the start of 2014 after

the completion of the course AND after the commencement of that subject in 2014.

PAYMENT needs to be made in the 2014 financial year during January before the course

starts

The office will be open from 23 January or payment can be made by direct credit to the

school bank account

YYEEAARR 1100 SSEELLLL PPRROOGGRRAAMMMMEE –– BBUUSSIINNEESSSS CCHHAALLLLEENNGGEE 22001144 Last week the Year 10 students took part in the Young Enterprise Business Challenge. They spent two days working in groups to develop a product to solve a social issue. The students were incredibly creative and products ranged from edible food wrapping, tops for alcohol that could only be opened when sober to large cuddly teddy bears. The presenters from Wellington led the students through finance, marketing and production, thus allowing the students the knowledge to create their business plans. The students were given the opportunity to dress in business attire and then present their plans on the third day. We need to give a special thanks to James McKenzie (NZ Ski.com), Cole Groves (Young Farmers), Martin Nordqvist (Council), Shane Calder (BNZ) and Simon Nikoloff (Grow Mid Canterbury) who gave up their time to judge the presentations. The winner of the Business Challenge 2014 was Begg and Co with a waste water recycling system. Congratulations go to the whole team.
